I usually give them one of these :noway:

I usually get really angry tho...wish I could just run up and shake them furiously while screaming "who the fuck do you think you are!?"

I do nothing because it's none of my business. If they're so obvious when they steal that a random shopper can see them, then they will eventually be caught in the future.

its not that they are being obvious, its that I so happen to be in the right place at the right time.

*shrug*

Most stores have a built-in amount of loss, right? H&M does, I'm sure other stores have similar policies.

Unless I'm being paid to stop shoplifters, I don't really get involved.

don't really care. Unless it was at some sort of mom and pop business, I can't bring myself to feel bad for a company.

one time I was at Borders back before that chain went under, and I was browsing in the CDs, and this really sketchy, dirty looking dude with a huge beard was blatantly taking discs out of their cases and sticking them into his jacket, like a fuck ton of them. He saw me looking at him and got this scared look in his eye, but it was just so funny I had to laugh because anyone who looked in his direction would have instantly realized what he was doing. I smiled and gave him a thumbs up and kept moving.

stores don't have "built in loss". even big companies are constantly freaking out about it. problem is that they can't do much about it. most theft is by employees and professional thieves.

stealing is such an intrinsically immoral thing

really irks me. unless it's something like food to feed a starving family or whatever. but i don't think that's what we're talking about here.

i would pointedly let them know i saw them but probably otherwise do nothing. unless it was a mom in pop; in that case i would either stare them until they put away/left the store or tell a worker.

one time when i worked in borders i came out of the bathroom to see a 20ish guy stuffing "A Million Little Pieces" down his pants. he looked up and goes "you work here?". I said yeah and he threw the book at me, like pushed it away from himself at me and ran out of the store. it was hilarious.

there was a kid who would come in and steal manga, and we knew he was doing it but our stupid boss always had us understaffed. i'd just stay by the area but then i'd get bitched out for not helping customers so i just said fuck it. later on a kid came in and said hey i know this kid is stealing, and i asked him for the kid's name and gave it to my manager who confronted him the next time he was in the store. we're talking about a 14-15 year old.

about a year later (after i stopped working there) i saw the kid back in the store so obviously they were now letting him in again. so i guess they worked it out

the most effective tactic to use against a shop lifter is making eye contact with them. If you speak to them it's even more effective. You don't have to mention or let on that you saw them shoplifting. Often just that is enough to make the think twice and walk away.

That's why a lot of big box stores put greeters at the doors. The purpose is to make eye contact with every person walking in the door and to verbally acknowledge them. It disuades many would be shoplifters simply because it plants the thought in their head that they aren't anonamous while they're in the store.

If the person is a professional shoplifter (most of whom work in shoftlifting rings) the only thing you can do to stop them is to follow them around the store and let them know you're watching them. Those people will sometimes steal anyway, because they know most stores will not try to physically restrain them when they walk out.

My Uncle Leo likes to shoplift. If he gets caught he just puts on an act. "I'm an old man! I'm confused! I thought I paid for it. What's my name? Will you take me home?" I think the next time I see him doing it I'm going to teach him a lesson.

D is right, most places have a built in % of shrink when they conduct inventory audits…it's p much the benchmark for how well the store manages loss.

also, she was some sort of government employee.

I usually begin by sending out my second. I have them walk up, point at me and say "you see him? He's got a gun." Then I wait about five minutes and follow up with a flying boot kick while I'm throwing dozens of really expensive security guard badges like shurikens. I end the act of justice sought with a solid backhand. I then hogtie the perp with zipties and drag them to the counter and say "I think this feller here has something he would like to say," then i walk out of the store with my dirty sister flapping in the wind while doves are being released and canaries sing songs of victory.
