View Full Version : let's talk cities. where could you see yourself living?
pale_princess 05-10-2012, 04:00 PM i've lived in the same city for the past 12 years. not planning on moving anytime soon but i think about it from time to time.
toronto's a pretty great city. i think there's maybe two other cities i've visited that i could picture myself actually living in: chicago and montreal.
chicago is more like toronto (but 3x the size and wayyyy better mexican food) but logistically montreal is the more realistic of the two.
montreal is really quite lovely and has great arts, music, culture, food, etc. i love all the little duplexes with stairs going up the front that are everywhere in the city's core. i speak okay french, and it'd get better being around it all the time. rent is very cheap there. and i've got a few friends over there. but really cold winters and if you're anglo the only jobs really available are kitchen staff ones, which i've never done.
where have you lived and what was it like? where are cities you have visited that you can picture yourself living in? how about places where there's no way in hell you'd live (for me: ottawa)?
somewhere with a cooler climate...i like rain, but it never rains in arizona.
Pretzel Logic 05-10-2012, 04:08 PM I am from Philly and I live there, except for my 6 month stay here in Kansas City. I have vacationed several times in Cape Cod and southern Maine. I could definitely see myself living up there later in life.
If I were to move up farther Northeast sooner (like in the next 15 years), I'd live in Boston. What a wonderful city.
I've never been to the West Coast but I am heading there for vacation in June, so I'll see if I like that or not.
MyOneAndOnly 05-10-2012, 04:20 PM My list...

Asheville, NC

yo soy el mejor 05-10-2012, 04:28 PM i'd like to end up somewhere a bit rural.
pale_princess 05-10-2012, 04:30 PM southern maine sounds lovely.
i went to philly and i could potentially live there. it didn't really have that "home" feeling like mtl or chicago. same with charleston and nyc.
vancouver is a beautiful place to visit but i don't think i could live there.
yo soy el mejor 05-10-2012, 04:37 PM i was supposed to make my first trip to LA in october but my cousin postponed her wedding to buy a house so now i have to wait until next may unless i go out there for some other reason. i most likely won't like it there but i'm sure it's fun to visit at least once.
i'd like to end up somewhere a bit rural.
Culleoka, TN, bb!!

I've heard people say the same thing about Philly and I get where they are coming from. It's not a very friendly city and I think the passionate sports mentality leads people to be weary of outsiders. The more accepting parts would probably be around Northern Liberties where the young people are.
Mooney 05-10-2012, 04:50 PM i'll second montreal.
yo soy el mejor 05-10-2012, 04:51 PM Culleoka, TN, bb!!
how's the weather? that place looks too hardcore for me.
i really loved flagstaff in arizona. i didn't get a chance to hang out much but it sure is picturesque and somewhere i would like to live. prescott valley, where i lived, also had great weather. i wish i could take that with me everywhere i went.
PV had a population of about 25,000 which is fine. my only complaint is everything is so spaced out it's hard to be neighborly and just take it easy, ya know.
MyOneAndOnly 05-10-2012, 04:52 PM I once liked Toronto.... back when I used to drive there in the summer to drink when I was 18. But it's such a sprawling, car filled mess and their horrible mayor is such a douche that I don't think i'd ever really want to live there.
yo soy el mejor 05-10-2012, 04:55 PM and i'm not sayin' i wanna live in the suburbs. don't get it twisted!
FlutterShyIha 05-10-2012, 04:58 PM I think I'd be in Chicago... Or maybe Seattle.

everyone i met in philly was super friendly! but they were all like "you came.... to philly from canada?!"
i was mostly around rittenhouse
Pretzel Logic 05-10-2012, 05:11 PM i was mostly around rittenhouse
Nice! You got to see the classy part of town.

Pretty hot and humid during the summer, but cold ass winters! Ill prolly move back if I ever reach an age where I don't have to work and my health is good…I miss the country so very very much.…
pale_princess 05-10-2012, 07:10 PM I once liked Toronto.... back when I used to drive there in the summer to drink when I was 18. But it's such a sprawling, car filled mess and their horrible mayor is such a douche that I don't think i'd ever really want to live there.
toronto's mayor and transit system are embarrassing. for real.
MyOneAndOnly 05-10-2012, 07:24 PM It's kind of sad too. Cause Toronto is a coll town. But I've spent soooo much time stuck in traffic there that my opinion is prejudiced.
If I moved to a large city it would have to have a good public transportation system
Order 66 05-10-2012, 07:33 PM i can pretty much see myself in any city as long as its in a metropolitan area. i would think even something like, uh, lincoln nebraska would be bearable if you're in the right part of the city. i say that because everybody shits on houston. yeah i'd much rather live in chicago or NY or something but in the right neighborhood its not lightyears removed from an experience you could have in austin or something
if i had the luxury of moving i'd probably be best fit for someplace like portland or something. but work keeps me anchored to one place

the subway system is as small as philly's, which is half the size. we need more subways, but built 50 years ago and in core areas. our blowhard mayor wants to build more subways with money we don't have in buttfuck areas where everyone drives.

i bike in nicer weather and it takes 3/4 the time it does on the goddamned streetcar
MusicMan4 05-10-2012, 07:48 PM Just Toronto or Chicago or Philly
The latter two just because I already lived there
I'd never be allowed to immigrate to Canada though
Really my only realistic option is new Brunswick, Nj
pale_princess 05-10-2012, 07:53 PM "toronto just feels like one big sports bar right now. open for business!" - verbatim quote from g just now
Trotskilicious 05-10-2012, 08:00 PM face it canada sucks

can't imaging the rent in kabul is all that much right now.
TheGirl 05-10-2012, 11:35 PM I've been living in Southern Ontario for just over 6 years now and I'm not a fan. I grew up in the Maritimes and would love to return there. If not there, I've spent a bit of time in Montreal over the years and really loved it.
Trotskilicious 05-10-2012, 11:36 PM montréal is on my list
Eulogy 05-11-2012, 08:31 AM out of places i've been for longer than a little bit
would live in:
Chicago
London
would not live in:
north central Indiana
Washington, D.C.
I don't think I'd want to live in NYC or LA. Don't know enough about Boston or Philly. Wouldn't want to live anywhere in the south. Pacific northwest could be cool. Northern CA too.
I really think I need to live in a city though. Rural/suburban life is not for me.
MyOneAndOnly 05-11-2012, 09:07 AM I lived for one year in northern indiana. I was a punk kid going to a private rural school. One of the most depressing times of my life. I felt like I was in the deep south or something.
Eulogy 05-11-2012, 09:08 AM i mean i had the time of my life while i was there but it's a miserable part of the country
reprise85 05-11-2012, 09:26 AM i've only lived in florida and louisiana. well, i was born in new york but we moved when i was only a few months old.
rural living sucks. louisiana should be salted and set on fire

mxzombie 05-11-2012, 10:06 AM montreal's pretty nice. don't imagine i'd ever live there, more for practical reasons though.
chicago's cool--it beats albany, ny and miami (the only other us cities i've lived in). i work here for a small company that will probably never move far from chicago, but i could see moving further out from the city. not into the west suburbs.
Mayfuck 05-11-2012, 10:08 AM but rather east into the lake itself

I've thought this.
In my mind, I really want to live in Madison, WI, though I've never been to either. I know I couldn't live in NYC or LA. I am ready to get the hell out of Boston. I am just not a city girl. I'm ready to try the midwest or go back to the south.

Trotskilicious 05-11-2012, 08:14 PM me? no, haven't seen it. I have been to Albuquerque and it's like san antonio in the desert.
Mayfuck 05-11-2012, 08:37 PM i really liked san antonio. i spent half a day in ABQ and i liked it too. i felt really relaxed and comfortable in those towns. when I go to SF or NY i get anxiety. Thats why I like LA, cause its a mutated abomination of a parched out blue collar southwest sprawbelt town and a cosmopolitan hipster big city.
Trotskilicious 05-11-2012, 08:43 PM I feel you on that, I like the blue collar aspect but what I really dislike is sprawl. Also the culture of both towns is touristy. Santa Fe felt more lived in.
Trotskilicious 05-11-2012, 08:45 PM i will say after three years atx is getting a little annoying with the level of upper class development and the fact that pretty much everybody i meet is from somewhere else
null123 05-11-2012, 08:49 PM I loooove the desert and yes I've been there, my mom grew up there and I have family there.
pale_princess 05-11-2012, 08:52 PM i wanna visit the desert.
fictional town i wanna live in is dillon, tx, obvs. bye bye husband and hello tim riggins!!!
U always have a place in my home, bb
Ideally I'd live in Chicago, but a few years ago I was making plans to move to Albuquerque. I'd love to retire somewhere near the East coast, even though that's unrealistic ($$$). In a dream world I would just travel up and down California forever.
slunken 05-11-2012, 11:47 PM I would like to live in a houseboat behind a waterfall.
