I was in highland park the other day and went by the site of Billy's tea house.

Here's some pictures-

why is he doing this

because he feels compelled to go from one failed project to another. i can almost guarantee this place never opens. he announced this a few months back so he's probably lost interest by now.

and that name is fucking stupid.

I got a box of some awesome kind tea from an old roommate in college. It was from Japan. I wish I'd written down the name of it.

Is there a date that this place is going to open, or what?

If you're awesome* you buy low-rent, run-down shit in "up and coming" parts of town ripe for gentrification.

*i.e. I think I've got a great idea but really enough capital to make it happen elsewhere

His girlfriend is really into tea and treats, I think. I am too but this place is looking rough already. My favorite tea shop is in a very ugly location though and it's still great because the guy who owns it really knows and loves tea. He doesn't do treats though. I mean, the tea is the treat. I'm kinda suspicious of a tea house that feels a need to supplement its tea with treats.

I just laughed so hard at this thread. My trolling netphoria has paid off today.

Is that place really up and coming? I don't know the area. It reminds me of some run down dump in Oakland that used to be a bail bonds place or an Asian massage parlor.

Building & Area Description

The building is a former post office right in the heart of Highland Park. The property is located in the desirable Ravinia Business District, known for its charming boutiques and fine dining. In addition to the 14,000 vehicles that pass by daily, Roger Williams attracts an abundance of foot traffic throughout the year.

The village benefits from multiple transportation outlets including US-41, headed towards Milwaukee, I-94 going straight downtown and five Metra stations. The tenant will benefit from the tremendous amount of foot traffic the village gets, largely coming from Ravinia Festival, drawing over 500,000 people annually.

Highland park is a pretty nice burb but the street he's on doesn't seem to have much going for it. I've only lived in the area for a couple of months now. It's not in the "heart" of it either. it's not even walkable to the heart. Downtown highland park is nice imo but he is not there.

The building is what it is. However the grey day and no trees in bloom did not do those photos any justice. It is completely covered up and I couldnt see inside. no opening date was posted either.

i think the fact that the other two spots look empty as well seems to be a bad sign

austin's gentrification is picture book, and most of the developments do not end up in areas where there's nothing around them, but like you said, pictures don't really do the area justice, it could actually be a solid location with a couple of storefronts in transition at the moment

Billy Corgan Slashes the Price Again on Gold Coast Condo
Thursday, June 23, 2011, by Mark Boyer

Through the '90s, Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan was the unofficial ambassador for a generation of angsty teens. He's all grown up now, but the housing market must have him feeling a bit angsty these days. The home-grown rocker has been trying, without luck, to sell his 3,700-square-foot unit in the old Patterson-McCormick Mansion for two and a half years, and this week he dropped the price again. According to the Trib, Corgan bought the place for $2.95 million back in 2002. Then, in 2008, he listed it for $5.5M. For much of the past year, Corgan has also tested the rental market, listing the unit for $10,000 per month, but that, apparently, didn't generated much interest either (and it looks like the rental listing has been removed). This week, he relisted the 2BD, 2.5BA unit for $2.85 million (down from $3.55M). Think it'll sell this time?

For reasons Corgan declines to get into, he recently parted company with his business partner. His hopes of drawing performers and presenters through open submissions haven't panned out.

The occasional musical set by Corgan, who performed as part of the salon's opening festivities, won't hurt Madame ZuZu's fortunes. But he knows the salon's success will depend more on the clientele's participation. "I don't want me to be the driver," he says. "That would be bad business."

Yeah, aside from the fact that you seem to know what you're talking about...I would also say that "bingo nights" were absolutely sincere as in the video interviews he's always going on about how he plays 40s and 50s era music in the cafe to make the atmosphere more "inviting" for the old ladies in the neighborhood.

No, he actually performed after the bingo was done. It was actually a fun time!

http://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLyKDb3E4A1sfeRi1BhJ1BmrSOEz1lHmjo

That's the performance.

I don't know where people are getting the idea he's not involved in the Tea House, the employees indicate otherwise. I perform there often, and he seems to be there a lot.

Damn, I probably haven't played bingo since I was in elementary school. Bingo is sort of relaxing and (mildly) exciting, although certainly not so for the caller for whom it must be excruciatingly tedious.

Matt, what kind of workshop was Billy talking about?

He's considering holding a songwriting workshop at Zuzu's. I don't know about any details, but probably after their current tour.

Oh, and btw... there are less expensive teas you can get there. I drink the Earl Grey for $4.50. I enjoy it.

Kreatorkind
04-27-2013, 12:49 AM
The tea is good, $4.50 for a cup is however on the price level of a London tourist trap. But the space is rather small, so no idea how profitable it would be to charge $3 like other places.

I dunno... the prices seem comparable to Starbucks or whatever. Plus Highland Park is a pretty rich suburb. The place seems to be doing fine. There have always been people in and out every time I've ever been there. I think they do a decent rush hour business on top of that. From all appearances, it seems to be doing well.

Beyond that, I get a good vibe from the place. I feel comfortable there and it seems to have good mojo. (whatever that may mean. :p )

Wait...so are you saying that a group of loud black people recurrently patronize Corgo's teahouse at whatever time of day you tend to go? Interesting...have you checked to see if they are Oprah's friends? Are they hosting a new age book club? Every time I see either images or video of this place it is pretty much 110% white clientele. Really though, if this place manages to attract more than just a preponderance of vaguely hip white gen-Xers that's probably a sign it is succeeding on its own merits as a business.

There's a shop like that here too. I had a conversation with the woman who runs it and asked her if she got her things from there and she said yes, and whispered "on the cheap". Fuck this. The people who live and work there get very little. I watched women hand sew those purses, and sell them for a few dollars. Over here, you may pay upwards of $40 - $80 for one. http://www.earthboundtrading.com/

Him and Jeff came to one of my gigs there. He played a few songs on my guitar and was breaking down some of the structures of SP songs like Pinwheels and Tonight Tonight. He showed me a "lost bridge" to Pinwheels. It was a pretty cool experience. Other than that I haven't asked him much about SP other than general stuff like "How's it going with the new album". I never want to be that person that swarms him and launches a battery of questions at him.

He was using it as an example of how he constructs songs. It's not your standard verse/chorus/verse/chorus kind of song. The first verse is the finger-picked notes from C to D and the second verse uses the intro as the structure rather than just going right back to the finger-picked part. There is a certain level of sophistication in the actual structures of the songs.

slunken

hahahahahahahaha oh mercy

It's more sad than it is funny. Restaurant/cafe businesses have a high failure rate and it doesn't sound like there's much of a buzz outside of this place besides the fact that Billy owns it. The neighborhood has to support it in the long run and it doesn't seem like they're flocking to it. The shop might get by for another couple of years given Billy's deep pockets and the political support/favors he's getting, but eventually they'll either have to make some drastic changes or close shop. I doubt this place is running in the black from month to month, but maybe that's why Billy hosts these events every so often to make up for low profits.

It was mentioned in an article that Corgan isn't even financially involved anymore. He just helps on a "creative" level.

HU is reporting that Billy played a Chicago song, White Lights, which I think he last played in 2004 or 2005. He also played a Godspell song, Day By Day, and a Flock of Seagulls song, Space Age Love Song.

He performed the Flock of Seagulls song with the original drummer from the Smashing Pumpkins. The Alesis HR16.

He also played "Something" by The Beatles.

Cool footage. I really enjoyed White lights. Corgans a great songwriter. He just needs a band that's somewhat near his talent level to back up his writings.

It'd be cool to see him do an acoustic album/tour without his shitty back up band bringing him down.

Yea, I like White Lights, too. Hopefully it will be on the Chicago Songs Reissue Deluxe Super Special Edition, released 2025.

Yeah I heard some of the show... Nicole and Jeff are really solid musicians, worthy of "carrying the torch" so to speak...

By shitty back up BAND you mean drummer, I guess.

Well...sort of.

I always really enjoyed the energy and stage presence that the personalities of IHA and Darcy brought to the band.

Now adays, Nicole and Jeff are certainly technically proficient enough to "carry the torch" but they sorely lack the charisma of JI+DW...

On a strictly technically proficient aspect , the only real beef I have with the band is Byrne. It's a crime to the fan-base to replace a guy with the musicianship and chops of Chamberlain with a guy like Byrne... Obviously any of the awesome percussion is absent from the new tracks, but Byrne even falls extremely short of replicating Jimmies parts in the older songs... Some songs worse than others, but it always sounds like such a cheap replication attempt.... I just can't get past it.

I have this feeling corgan reads your posts cause for the second time he brings up something you may have wrote.

"Beats and bloops" he now describes the new record. Reminds me of how you wrote "bleeps and bloops version of blissed and gone", also your spiteface list.

Monte pls confirm

I'll be honest, I know I can't have been the only person to submit a one-song setlist, so the chances that he saw my Spiteface list are not 100%

But I'll also be honest and say I was super, super excited at the idea that he might have read it and I was too embarrassed to talk about it with anyone in person

Well, I think it could be likely that he did or he read it on netphoria. I just find it funny that there was that and the bloops thing. So I am forming a new conspiracy theory that he is stalking you. Watch out.

My review of his tea house is:
It was a lot better than I thought it would be.

If I lived around there and had no idea who corgan was I would frequent it. I would stay away from it as a fan; too creepy to run into corgan.

The teas that are the best are the cheapest ones.

I didn't try the super expensive 20 dollar tea but I tried a 14 dollar one and it was nice but it wasn't outstanding. Also, sometimes the expensive ones improperly, burn them and stuff stuff. I didn't have a negative experience though my friend did.

My fave tea I tried is the Black Canadian Smoked Ice Wine Elixer. It was very smokey and savoury, kinda like a bacon tea. Not for everyone though.

Jesus christ, how many cups of tea did you buy? and 14 dollars for a cup of tea? What a fucking rip!

I think I had 4 different teas. Only one expensive one. It isn't a biggy, I mean I tried it for the novelty of it, "oak barrel aged" supposed to taste like whiskey... nope tasted like a very gentle black tea. But that crazy Black Canadian one was the bomb. I bought that.

The reason I tried so many is because I tried them on different days, all the fan meet ups were there (naturally).

holy shit.

Now I wonder how much my friend paid for the teas he brought me. I wasn't the least bit impressed by the tea, even less so now that I know how much they're charging for it. I've not been to the shop myself but my buddy thought it was weird, uncomfortable, and kitschy.
