View Full Version : How to make learning fun again?

Easy by making learning feel just like a game.

Here's a free website called www.memrise.com. Where you can learn foreign languages, expand your vocabulary, and get rewarded just like a game, with points, or compete with your friends on a leaderboard.

When you start learning a language for the first time, you will get 7 seeds to plant. These are vocabularies that you have to learn in the following quiz format

(Multiple choice, english-foreign, foreign-english, type the right answer in english, type the right answer in foreign and so on. It´s all mixed up, adjusting to your performance).

Once the seeds are planted they are stored in your greenhouse [short term memory] and a timer is also running down. When it reaches zero, you can harvest your plants.

Take a quiz which will be harder this time, and the words that you know will be placed in your garden. [long term memory]

From there on you have to give them water from time to time (quiz), otherwise they will die.

The fun part is getting points all the time you type a right answer!
+20 for a correct multiple choice, +50 for typing the right answer without other options. Also seeing your name climb up the leaderboard makes learning new words fun and addicting.

You can also create memes for each word, for an easier way to remeber the word your learning.

Lets all pick a subject and see who amongst us can get the highest score.

Sound like fun?

I thought your account was hacked, but you're serious? I actually want to learn German so I can better sing Kurt Weill songs in their native tongue. I mean, re learn. I did a year at high school but it's mostly gone.

Damn my post does sounds like an ad, I was attempting to be descriptive and interesting, sorry about that...

My experience with this has been funny, so far I know 100 Vietnamese words, I asked a Vietnamese lady what she was going to eat for lunch she replied rice and chicken.

I didnt know how to say chicken but i knew that in Vietnamese chim means bird, so I yell out oh your going to eat rice and chim. She looks startled and smiles.

Later I realized the word chim has dual meanings, it does mean bird, but for some reason it's also another name for pussy.

Yeah its a cool site, I think only four of the main languages have the option to hear the correct pronounciation of the word as you learn them, but users can add stuff anytime so its neat how the site continues to get better.
