People don't want to devote their lives to one fucking album, they just want to hear good music. It's just annoying to create extra work for the listener.

Not that it affects me. I'm 100% committed to never listening to this shitty album. But I do look forward to seeing everyone tear it to shreds.

Just a marketing campaign

UPDATE:*For any fans worried about this being a pure digital release, Crestfallen.com has learned it will have a traditional physically released and that the marketing side will be different than normal.

“The concept that we’re not releasing this record like normal at all,” she said. “The key is that when we release the record, we’re not going to release single a viral video. You’re going to take the record a have a full online experience with it.”

Either the writer of this story didn't have the luxury of copywriting his own work, or he's speaking in a dialect that only Machina mystery code crackers can understand.

Just releasing an album and letting the music do the talking.
that would be to easy, now he at least can indulge his ego as well have a system to blame when no one really buys the album. In the past he sure has talked like he knows the recording industry but judging by how he has routinely destroyed every resemblence of a community around his band for inane reasons he sure does not.

I don't understand the emphasis on the "album." Nobody needs to tell SP fans to listen to albums instead of singles. And the idiots who bought singles and such back in the 90s just because they were charting are not ever going to buy another SP album.

When you're a "legacy act" all you need to do is make a good record and people will buy it. Does Pearl Jam or Radiohead need to call a press conference to discuss the merits of listening to an LP vs shuffle on an iPod?

My guess is that there's not much to see here. just some social media marketing (which isn't that big of a deal anymore), more typical billy interviews to plug the album release.. and a lot of fans who will get worked up over it.

This shit happens to 75-80% of musicians when they make it big, anyway. It doesn't matter if they succeed or if they get music out in a timely fashion because they have millions of dollars to sit on and there are still a ton of people who will kiss their ass despite the glory days being a decade or more ago. Or they release music on a regular basis that blows, but nobody in their inner circle will tell them that anyway.

"We're done with that. There is no point. People don't even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles and skip over the rest."

"The listening patterns have changed," Corgan laments. "So why are we killing ourselves to do albums, to create balance and do the arty track to set up the single? It's done."

"I still stand by my view that I don't think albums are particularly relevant at this time. That may change. But as far as making music... Nobody I know listen to albums anymore. Nobody. I don't care if they're 20 or 55."

"We’re playing songs off an album that’s been out now for six or seven months, but most people don’t know the songs. People don’t listen to records anymore. Yeah, when Siamese Dream was popular, more of the audience would listen to that, but when we played Machina stuff, 50% of the audience knew the album. Now you play, it’s like 10% of the audience knows it, because people don’t listen to albums anymore. It’s all iPod playlists and stuff."

"I mean, if you were able to poll the audience, I would say that 90% of those people probably have not heard more than two songs off that record, and wouldn’t be interested in more than two songs, and won’t listen to them even if you gave them to ‘em for free. I think that’s what Radiohead’s going to find out really quickly, with, even giving away music…"

"I would have no problem giving away music for free if people would listen to the music. I don’t think anybody ever envisioned that “free” would also equal “not listen” and also “not go to concerts”. That’s the thing that I think is kind of mystifying."

"So you spend a tremendous amount of time making sure the ninth song on your record is just as good as the first song, and in the back of your mind you’re thinking, “But nobody’s going to fucking listen to this.” So we’re over that..."

"So you spend a tremendous amount of time making sure the ninth song on your record is just as good as the first song, and in the back of your mind you’re thinking, “But nobody’s going to fucking listen to this.” So we’re over that..."
but... i listen to albums.

It's funny that he should bring up Radiohead, because they've had their share of internet gimmicks. The difference is that no-one gives a fuck about the gimmicks now, because the music has proven to speak for itself.

well they are not reintroducing the album to people because of the gimmicks they're just making an album and promoting it with gimmicks

"We're done with that. There is no point. People don't even listen to it all. They put it on their iPod, they drag over the two singles and skip over the rest."

"I think that’s what Radiohead’s going to find out really quickly, with, even giving away music…"

Poor Billy is so out of touch. A simple search on youtube of the In Rainbows tunes shows some pretty respectable viewing numbers.

House of Cards - 15,891,606 views
Scotch Mist live In Rainbows show - 6,566,068 views
All I Need - 4,472,531 views
Jigsaw Falling Into Place - 4,294,541 views
Reckoner - 3,222,415 views
15 Step - 2,936,436 views
Videotape - 2,272,811 views
Nude - 1,515,549
Weird Fishes / Arpeggi - 1,175,672 views

Even Gnarles Barkley's cover of Reckoner has more views than all the Teagarden tracks combined. lol

That's his point! Some shite artist doing a Radiohead cover gets more watches/listens than the Pumpkins last output. Maybe Radiohead should cover a Pumpkins song.

Altimeter Group buzzmeister Brian Solis outlines what he and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan have to say at their SXSW Interactive presentation on March 12:

We’ll discuss key themes from [Solis's book The End of Business as Usual] as it relates to the music industry. The focus will be on changing the methods that artists use to deliver music by re-inventing new systems that can work hand in hand with the art they created. The goal will be to put the art of music back to the forefront by ignoring the continual need of the music industry to standardized systems to promote and sell music in an era of constant change.

Billy will also discuss how social media and technology will play a part in the release of their new album Oceania and share his vision for reinventing the album experience overall.

This isn't 1999 anymore. Whatever is left of "the music industry" is a shell of its former self and isn't really relevant anymore outside of artists that are more or less walking commercials/publicity machines (a la Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, etc.). Billy still seems to think that major labels are still out there doing what they've done for the past 40 years and have real pull, which is pretty laughable. He can't break out of the line of thinking that made him famous.

He's obsessed with trying to reinvent something that is more or less dead. It's like some guy trying really hard to come up with outside of the box concepts for groundbreaking new car phones. He's trying to convince everyone that there's this new, awesome way to release music, and it's just like, "Well duh."

So instead of just making an album and finding a simple, cool way to release it, he's reaching for some huge, masturbatory, and ultimately confusing way to put it out there. It's not even about the music at this point. It's about some far-fetched crazy thing that he thinks is revolutionary but will ultimately just be kind of unnecessary and may even alienate some of the people who actually still care about his music. I can't wait to hear what he has to say after this (much like the Teargarden project) doesn't really go anywhere.

What ever happend to that Sony sponsored early social / media networking / mashup site that Machina was tied to? Wasn't that also supposed to revolutionized the way albums were experienced?

Billy is like Microsoft during the vista era... always jumping on the bandwagon of the current trend years too late while their core product goes to shit.

Seriously though... just look at what the guy tweets about day and night... Wrestling, wrestling, wrestling.... then look at someone like Amanda Palmer who day and night eats, breathes, and fucks creativity.

Watching the progress of Billy is now all about "Who will leave next, and what hilarious shit will they have to say about their experiences afterwards" more than what music or art or creativity he is outputting....

We’ll discuss key themes from the new book as it relates to the music industry and how Billy Corgan and The Smashing Pumpkins plan on shaking things up. We’ll focus will be on changing the methods that artists use to deliver music by re-inventing new systems that can work hand in hand with the art they created. The goal? To put the art of music back to the forefront by ignoring the continual need of the music industry to standardized systems to promote and sell music in an era of constant change.

Billy will also discuss how social media and technology will play a part in the release of their new album Oceania and share his vision for reinventing the album experience overall. As Billy shared with Mashable in a discussion about our SXSW session, “Our aim is to turn the ‘social’ into a new way to experience an album,. By taking the medium one step further we will create an experience with Oceania online and off-line that transcends the single and the single mentality in all ways.”

Many reviewers of the Year Zero album also commented on the accompanying game. Ann Powers of The Los Angeles Times praised the album and game concept as "a total marriage of the pop and gamer aesthetics that unlocks the rusty cages of the music industry and solves some key problems facing rock music as its cultural dominance dissolves into dust."

It sounds like this panel is a marketing ploy for Brian Solis' (whoever the fuck that is) new book and Billy's attempt to further brand and market his band. I would not hold my breath for any ground breaking ideas from these two attention whores. It also does not sound like there will be any information about the new music or a release date (if that is what you were hoping for).

Yup.

Just from a brief google search about Brian, the guy is pretty much in the biz of shmoozing with other people who are in the biz of shmoozing with other people, glad handing and circle jerking the whole way around... there's an entire market built around this fucking shit.... it's pretty much the whole synergy thing.... etc.

Space Girl 1979

I mean the guy pretty much is making a name for himself by connecting himself with as many high profile people as possible... it's really quit fascinating... he's put together a bunch of bull shit about the web and business and then goes around bull shitting to high profile people, interviews them for his youtube channel, writes a mediocre book full of more bull shit and slowly but surely climbs the social / biz ladder.

At least, that's what it looks like just from doing a bit of google research.

-Billy then talked about how hard it is for musicians to compete with just music and how important visuals are. He stated that he thinks more young fans would be more interested in music with visuals rather then music on its own.

Billy, just STFU already and release the thing online like other successful bands have done in the past few years. You really do sound like an out of touch dinosaur that just doesn't get it, and I think that's because your explanations are in truth elaborate rationalizations for why you do not have the notoriety or relevance you feel you deserve.

People don't buy albums anymore? Yes they do. The songs may be scattered amongst five zillion other songs in your playlist and completely out of order because they enjoy variety, but they are still there. And of course there are still people that listen to entire albums.

People have stopped listening to music with their completely undivided attention? Erm...since when did they ever only listen to music in that way? People have always thrown on music in the background as they do other things.

People only listen to nothing except singles anymore? What the hell - if anything, due to the ubiquity and easy accessibility of music, people's awareness and inclusion of non-singles in their listening repertoire has increased since they don't have to commit to an entire album but can choose the songs they like for inclusion. In effect, people are able to create their own "singles selections" off an album rather than what's shoved down their throat on the radio.

People need a complete multimedia experience to enjoy music anymore? No they don't. What evidence is there of this? Good music still speaks for itself and doesn't need additional gimmicks. Hell, the music videos he speaks of provided the original "multimedia experience" but they have fallen by the wayside in current years compared to their peak in the 90s.

Youtube doesn't sell albums? Really? Then how do you explain shit like Justin Bieber? If something goes viral it can.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAAAAAA

would've been funnier if he said "relevant" rather than "big." but still

RenewRevive
03-13-2012, 12:43 PM
he has to understand that times change, people change. it matters not at all if Oceania turns out to be the best thing he's ever done, it will not sell close to what they did in the mid-90s and the band will never, ever be famous again. it's a cycle of gaining popularity, if you're lucky (and/or good) plateauing out as a major commercial entity and then a decline (rapid or steady). an artist has to accept it, unfair as it is.

like stumpy says, when it comes down to it he's desperately trying to find a reason why he's no longer as big/relevant as he was and putting it down to things beyond his control. which is true to an extent, but he seems obsessed with re-establishing himself as a major act and not just making the best record he can and accepting modest commercial returns. why the continuing delay with Oceania? there is no perfect moment to release the album, it won't matter, it isn't going to sell millions of albums, irrespective of how they releae it.

what the fuck is wrong with you

have you ever even been to SXSW

shut up rider

South by SXSW west has always had a douchy vibe. It wasn't until twitter launched there that it became as horrible as it is now where people like Corgan think they can go there say some buzz words and it means that they are launching some new industry paradigm.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Twitter#Reaction

That's why Corgan is there doing something with Social Media that he still can't talk about. They think if they go there instantly every blog will create buzz about them.

I'M A NATIVE BORN AUSTINITE YOU DIPSHIT

i know more about this town and what goes on in it than you ever will for one thing, and two, it is always enjoyable to see downtown turn into a open ended music festival, FADER FORT or not.

yeah corporate sponsorship has ruined our lives, whatever. the collapse is coming anyway.

from another site:

I was at Corgan's talk yesterday at SXSW and he said a lot of interesting stuff, much of which probably would have pissed off everyone here. He was a little all over the place, but the moderator was terrible. Still it was a good talk and I hope a video or transcript of the whole thing eventually ends up online.

Here are some highlights from memory
- he said that the labels used illegal downloading as a "smokescreen" and that their problems all date back to telling Napster to f off rather than realizing that people wanted to share music the way they always had.

- at the same time he talked about the reality that people don't want to pay for music anymore so it was all a little contradictory. Obviously he knows that piracy is the real issue but it's like he didn't want to come straight out and say it in a room full of tech people.

- he talked about how there's no room for the great middle ground artists and one of my favorite quotes was something along the lines of "you can either be a robot or some jerk in his basement"

- one of his most laughable claims was that alternative music was one of the greatest artistic movements in human history. He may have even said the greatest.

- there was no time left for a Q&A so they only took one question from the audience. The guy said something kind of confrontational but didn't have a mic so nobody could hear him, so Corgan invited him up on stage and they had a little argument in front of everyone. it was pretty amusing.

Evidently he has a plan to put together a group of bloggers who will moderate a discussion of sorts with fans and the fans will be able to come to some kind of consensus about which items they want to hear from the Pumpkins archives as well as setting a price for it. He's going to (or already has?) publish a list of everything in their archives and then basically leave it up to the fans what gets released and for how much so then they can't complain about the price. It sounded pretty strange.

The most interesting point he made was about the internet's culture of negativity and dismissal. He talked about how in the '90s he could say or do something on stage that would anger 40% of the audience but make 60% of the audience like him even better. But now the 40% just tweets what a jerk he is and people who weren't even there decide "I'm not going to go see that asshole". So he decided basically not to talk onstage anymore. And this led into his point about successful artists today being overly safe and boring (the robots vs. the jerk in the basement line). They talked a little bit about Lana Del Rey and how that internet culture of snark tore her apart.

And his overall point was to lay the blame on fans without really talking about piracy. It was pretty interesting. He talked more about how the fans are creating this toxic culture that doesn't allow anything good to flourish. And he hinted at the piracy problem by saying that the fans have a "victim mentality" where they think "oh man you want me to pay $20, you're so greedy" etc.

He also talked about how musicians have to "create their own world" and how there needs to be a stronger visual element to music so that it's something more engaging and not something that you can just put in the background.

Sorry for the random disconnected recollections.

what i don't understand is his obsession with giving interviews all the time. the dude could prolly write a double album in a week or 2 a couple times a year and that would get him plenty enough attn and it would be positive. you can't talk your way out of it, man. pick up the guitar and fuck ppl up that way.

and get a real drummer

Agree he gives too much interviews for someone who nothing nowadays.
He should stay closed at home doing doing doing doing music until something worthy pops up.

I don't understand what the fuck he's talking about when he keeps saying "They only have one song." "Don't tell me this guy with one song is blah blah blah." Who is he talking about? Like, Feist on the iPod commercial? It's not like fucking Seven Mary Three in 1994 or some shit. People don't download the one Vampire Weekend or Phoenix song and listen to that over and over. They listen to albums.

Dude is so out of touch.

Also, his Arcade Fire argument... so my Grandfather doesn't know who Arcade Fire is. Yet, my 62 year old uncle does. My grandparents didn't know who the fuck The Smashing Pumpkins were in 1995. What the fuck is he even talking about? Why does The Arcade Fire need to be known by everyone on planet Earth for their music to have validity? It's all perspective based.

Its his way to not give Arcade Fire any respect. If he does that, then his whole argument is full of shit. We all know it is but he doesn't want to admit it.

Simon Cowell may have a new unlikely contender for the vacant 'X Factor' judge position: Billy Corgan.

Following his March 13th SXSW panel discussion in which he rallied against the artistic business model that 'American Idol' and 'X Factor' have created, the Smashing Pumpkins singer admitted he would still be up for a judges position if it were offered.

"I'd love it," Corgan told Spinner.

In tune with his earlier diatribe during the panel, the rocker explained it's not 'Idol' that's the problem, but society's inability to culturally offset the effect of those shows on the music industry.

"I don't have a problem with 'Idol' or 'X Factor,' I have a problem with when those things are not given the proper contextual hue," he said. "If there's an 'American Idol' there should be a proper alternative counterbalance -- if there was hair metal, there was grunge, know what I mean?"

As such, Corgan said he can respect shows like 'American Idol' for being transparent in their aim, unlike most modern rock music, which he refers to as Laptop Rock due to its ability to blend into the background while one works.

"Laptop Rock is not the adequate response for 'American Idol' -- and everybody knows it."

is he just out of left field saying this with no expressed interest from the show?

or is spinner taking it out of context maybe?

enough with all this sound-bite rent-a-quote shite, just release the fucking album already and tour like a normal person.
