View Full Version : Tales of Scorched Earth appreciation thread Duke1497 02-22-2012, 12:18 AM God I love this song so much One of my favorites off of Mellon Collie reprise85 02-22-2012, 12:22 AM it's pretty rad yeah TuralyonW3 02-22-2012, 12:22 AM Yeah it's essential Ball Sack Face 02-22-2012, 12:27 AM I like listening to it. CrabbMan 02-22-2012, 12:48 AM I don't like listening to it. Sounds too harsh. But I like the song itself and the energy in the record. I would enjoy hearing a creative alternate arrangement that had more emphasis on the melody. Trotskilicious 02-22-2012, 02:05 AM shit box this turd Ball Sack Face 02-22-2012, 02:09 AM shit box this turd anagram: Hi Trots Sixth Bud. Bud  Shallowed 02-22-2012, 05:07 AM This song is essential to me. It's definitely at the very edge of the soft/heavy spectrum of SP's repertoire. I love how pushed-to-the-limit the sound and the performance is. rottenugly 02-22-2012, 06:48 AM Yes, I like it very much, when I first heard the song on the MCIS cassette, I went to my laptop and downloaded the album...That was in 2009. ghost-mutt 02-22-2012, 07:58 AM goes good. not one of my favourites but it's a cool song unlike anything else the band ever did. rottenugly 02-22-2012, 08:45 AM Why one star this thread? The song is pretty good...I mean would you rather listen to something from Mellon Collie or some shit song from Oceania? I'd rather listen to 12 songs identical to Tales Of A Scorched Earth than listen to anything that's on Oceania... redbreegull 02-22-2012, 05:08 PM I like at the end when that sound goes BOOOV Spira|_ 02-23-2012, 01:10 PM I really never got into that song... teh b0lly!!1 02-23-2012, 01:15 PM i like that the pumpkins went there, conceptually but they're not the kind of band that could pull it off. not tight and forceful enough Ball Sack Face 02-23-2012, 01:51 PM I like the breakdown and the build up. smashingjj 02-23-2012, 02:10 PM i like it, but the production isn't very good. you can hardly hear the drums, that are quite fantastic i think Slurpee 02-23-2012, 02:49 PM This song was a ton of fun when I was 17. I think if you're looking for a Cyber Metal ideal, though, X.Y.U. is a better interpretation of the subgenre. I hate that the drums are buried, but I love Billy's vocals. He and Flood knew that with these lyrics, they had to really go for it. I would have preferred "Marquis in Spades" be there in its place. Ball Sack Face 03-10-2012, 09:59 PM It's 2012. Burn your MCIS discs on to your computer, throw them away, then burn the album on to blank discs with Marquis in Spades in it's place, then put it back in the MCIS case. Boom. Shallowed 03-10-2012, 10:10 PM ^ When you get Oceania you can do the same thing but replace all of the tracks with Siamese Dream TuralyonW3 03-10-2012, 10:11 PM It's 2012. Burn your MCIS discs on to your computer, throw them away, then burn the album on to blank discs with Marquis in Spades in it's place, then put it back in the MCIS case. Boom. I should do this with set the ray to Jerry in place of beautiful Monet LSD 03-11-2012, 12:06 AM I should do this with set the ray to Jerry in place of beautiful Yeah the first part with the cheap electronic drums is cheesy, but when that riff comes in on the "I love you..." part, it's such classic Pumpkins. Ball Sack Face 03-11-2012, 04:10 AM Yup. The beginning of the "So let the clouds roll by your face" line through the end is Billy at some of his finest. Ball Sack Face 03-11-2012, 04:11 AM "I'll be under your stars forever." Ball Sack Face 03-11-2012, 04:11 AM they used to be so good... redbreegull 03-11-2012, 02:35 PM I love how in the fadeout the lyric changes to "I'll be under your stairs forever..." creepy! aztec litany service 03-12-2012, 02:03 PM yeah i'd like to hear a remix of toase w/ less overdubs, louder drums, minus the distortion on the vocals...bill's voice could get distorted enough on its own stumpycat 03-13-2012, 03:11 AM yeah i'd like to hear a remix of toase w/ less overdubs, louder drums, minus the distortion on the vocals...bill's voice could get distorted enough on its own Yes. This song would have been amazing live - but they NEVER PLAYED IT LIVE - WTF!? ilikeplanets 03-13-2012, 04:06 AM He probably can't sing it all the way through Ball Sack Face 03-13-2012, 04:19 AM then slow it down, turn the lights up soft and play it acoustic, baby Monet LSD 03-13-2012, 04:26 AM That would actually be kinda cool. reprise85 03-13-2012, 05:51 AM yeah i've always wanted to hear an acoustic arrangement i mean the lyrics are good enough for it, they should try it out or someone should make a cover seriously. do it. Run To Me 03-02-2016, 06:26 PM After spending a lot of time with the MCIS vinyl (and thus being essentially forced thru this track whereas I've always skipped it on the CD) I am converted. This song is incredible. The vocal distortion, which was my initial barrier to enjoyment, now strikes me as a sorta bratty, self-referential, over-the-top Farewell to this genre of SP song. (You know, the 3 or 4 note hypnotic verse riff with driving drums, followed by power chord chorus with sing-song melody ala Hello Kitty Kat and many others). Cause really there's no song like that on any subsequent SP release, is there? The production choices thus strike me as the band (or bill/Flood) saying "fuck it all cause I don't care." Like, let's cram every single grain of distortion we can possibly fit onto it b/c this is the last one of its kind. Plus "you're all whores and I'm a fag and I got no mother and I got no dad to save me." Holy shit, what a lyric Ram27 03-02-2016, 07:32 PM For some reason I really like the demo version on the reissue where you can hear Jimmy count the band in The contrast between the tight, clean rhythm and the sonic explosion that follows is really cool ^ I like how you use the word hypnotic to describe the riff. One of the best things about the band is their hypnotic sections, something that's sorely missing from later stuff. You can't really lose yourself in Panopticon toase 03-02-2016, 08:57 PM After spending a lot of time with the MCIS vinyl (and thus being essentially forced thru this track whereas I've always skipped it on the CD) I am converted. Which songs you think fit the bill? I perceive Machina II as more a continuation of the baroque/cybermetal introduced on MCIS whereas I'm positing "Tales" as the last in the line of the Gish thru SD style psych rock tracks like Siva, Blue, Why Am I So Tired, etc. toase 03-02-2016, 11:12 PM <iframe width="420" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/5B2wgkkVm94" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> Ram27 03-03-2016, 12:02 AM thank god billy is striving for new sounds sd sucks cybermetal is life Run To Me 03-03-2016, 12:04 AM Y'know I was thinking of White Spyder when you mentioned MII. While I'd agree the recording is a spiritual cousin to Tales in its harsh/overdriven aesthetic, it's not quite the type of song I'm thinking of structurally. I'm talking the big heavy psych rockers with the gigantic verse riffs that are like so big yet minimalist at the same time. Geek. Jellybelly. Hello Kitty Kat where it's literally two fucking notes but it sounds big as a mountain range Anyway, cool, glad you seem to like Tales too russticles 03-03-2016, 03:03 AM Fucking great song Shit production though, can barely hear Jimmy! He's buried under a mountain of guitar and fuzz! Shame they never played it live. That bridge, fuckkkkkk october 03-03-2016, 04:15 PM The chorus of this song always reminded me of the bridge in 'To Forgive' which is also a great tune. FoolofaTook 03-03-2016, 05:30 PM tales is fucking sickening iridescent scillitationing ascending from the subterreneal infernitudes yeah. FoolofaTook 03-03-2016, 05:31 PM also what happened to ball sack face. such a charmer! toase 03-04-2016, 11:02 PM Anyway, cool, glad you seem to like Tales too You know, nevermind, I've never seen so much love for Tales in this thread :) |
