WERD. I was meant to head to oz after NZ but had to come back to handle some business. Which will be over soon. It's weird...I have no idea exactly where I'm going yet, but my parents are planning a trip to FL/NOLA/DR or something in March and they both keep saying "you'll be gone by then". my theoretical departure date is feb 29.

I have an open invitation to teach at a rural grassroots school in Nepal, volunteer gig, and I'm applying for an actual paying salary job in Hobart (why i'd like some first-hand info on tasmania) while still looking for other stuff daily. I'm also going down to Mexico next week and scouting out an ex-pat surf town and seeing what that's all about. Then I have Sea Shepherd as a kind of fall-back gig. We'll just see how the chips fall. come what may.

whenever I think outloud about this in the car or whatever...my dad always says "there's always new zealand." He knew how happy I was there and I think he wants an excuse to come visit :)

I love Australia. Tasmania I've never been but when I was in Brisbane my friend's parents were going for holiday to hike or something. My friend's fiancee was from Tasmania as well living in mainland Australia for several years and she liked both. Not much help I guess =/

Tassie is a beautiful place. Really amazing unspoiled scenery, great food, good down to earth locals (a little rough around the edges though sometimes!).

In a way it is not dissimilar to NZ. Very green, the climate is colder and wetter than mainland aus, it's quite isolated (and you can tell with some of the locals), the majority of the place being either rural or wild.

The best thing about the place is the abundance of amazing wild places to explore. There are parts of the island only accessible by foot, and then there are parts where no one has even set foot on. Get two weeks off, go hiking, camp outdoors, party on!

thanks! From what i'd heard and from the Tassies I've met, this is exactly what I had thought.

back in college I got really fucked up one night with my best friend and we started drunk dialing people. He knew a dude who had moved to Madagascar. We called him. He was living on an elevated platform in a rainforest and the dude talked to us for half an hour. I think he was shocked that anybody on earth actually called him. when the phone bill came the following month that one call was $200. When I showed it to my housemate I was like, "this was your friend I'm not paying this phone bill." He said, "Whatever dude, at least we didn't call Tasmania!"
