Does anyone still regularly use last.fm?

deadaswarhol

i do. i generally log everything when i sync my ipod, and when i'm in the mood for new music, i use the last.fm recommended radio thing, which bases its recommendations off of wht you listen to

i get so many suggestions following recommended artists and seeing what people into the noise/experimental horseshit i listen to are listening to

i don't know why i'm obsessed with keeping track of my play counts though. i just am. its fun to have a history of what i've been listening to at what time. i dunno. how could anyone not like this site

Trotskilicious
11-23-2014, 12:31 AM
this is all time from college days with winamp to spotify currently. there's a gap in there when i really started to listen to more stuff that i had an mp3 player that i couldn't put last.fm on so there's some data loss, not nearly as many robyn plays on this than there probably should be. same with titus, swans, etc. ANYWAY:

01 Pixies
02 Led Zeppelin
03 Sleater-Kinney
04 Nas
05 The White Stripes
06 Dum Dum Girls (this is shocking tbh)
07 The Smashing Pumpkins
08 Deerhunter
09 Beck
10 David Bowie
11 Massive Attack
12 Jay-Z
13 No Joy (jeez)
14 M.I.A.
16 The Jimi Hendrix Experience
17 The Smiths
18 The Rolling Stones
19 Cake
20 Talking Heads
21 Ghostface Killah
22 Cloud Nothings
23 Robyn (way too low because of the mp3 player gap of 2010-11
24 Kanye West (same as above)
25 OutKast (most of my outkast education was via CD)
26 Ride
27 Savages
28 Wu-Tang (low because CDs and the gap)
29 Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds
30 Charlie XCX
31 Black Angels
32 Titus Andronicus
33 Jane's Addiction (lol really)
34 Wire (low because of the gap)
35 Future of the Left
36 Wilco (lol)
37 Maria Bamford
38 Clutch
39 The Joy Formidable (low cuz the gap
40 The Police (and rising!)
41 Common
42 Radiohead (CDs)
43 The Band
44 Corrosion of Conformity
45 Filistine
46 The Roots
47 Talib Kweli
48 Refused (low because gap)
49 Queens of the Stone Age
50 At the Drive-In (low because gap)
51 Ted Leo and the Pharmacists.

Trotskilicious

lol no swans on the list at all hahaha ohmgod

i listen to them on vinyl mostly i dunno, you gotta be in a SWANS mood it's not like everyday music but see that's why i like last.fm it surprises you

Dum Dum Girls are pretty much a top ten band for me ATM, that's a pretty inclusive top 10 but it really should have outkast on there

pavementtune
11-23-2014, 12:53 AM
yea I like it for the data collection, it's always surprising to see the actual stats. And I watch a ton of live recs on YouTube, and you can scrobble that, too. Plus the gig function, that's nice as well.
And sometimes new related artist show up I really enjoy.

I think my actually favorite releases are hardly ever represented, since I listen to those on vinyl.

all that data, gone, now I can start from scratch

Trotskilicious
11-23-2014, 01:05 AM
the top five is absolutely no surprise, though i think it's interesting that all the other rap is so much lower than nas. i did this thing with the mp3 player that wasn't scrobbling where i filled it up entirely with rap music...but i guess i just played the hell out of illmatic and stuff in college, which i know i did but i did with outkast too (of course i had ATLiens, stankonia, and aquemini on CD before i got illmatic)...i dunno it's super weird to me. outkast really should be at that 4 slot but idk, super weird man

but dum dums at 6...damb

Trotskilicious
11-23-2014, 01:17 AM
i know i'm talking a lot about myself here but i just realized i really discovered and got into sleater-kinney when i had the mp3 player so they are #3 even with the gap. which probably means they're probably really my 1 or 2 most played band

yeah

god if anything looked at my listening habits in the past ten years it would probably be like 10 bands over and over wth a few exceptions here and there

and by ten i probably mean like 5 or 6 actually. I get into new bands (not necessarily new new but new as in i never really listened to that band/artist before) at the rate of maybe one every year and my interest with half of them doesn't last (Obviously i try more music than just one band a year... but i mean I don't get interested in pretty much anything... i can see why i get asked if i even like music sometimes... i guess i don't really...or at least, my tastes are very narrow)

yes. Laura.

I think I said this before but Jasamine had her bad local indie (very) pop rock band for years trying to make it, shoving it into everyone's faces. Shameless self promotion but she clearly knew how to network because that band was shit but seriously kept getting mentioned in every local entertainment weekly and they all reviewed her records but i never actually knew anyone that cared about her band, even her friends could barely be bothered to go see it. I remember her trying to win some sort of Mary Kate and Ashley Battle of the bands contest they had on their site, for some reason. I suppose her participation was supposed to be ironic but it think clearly she REALLY wanted to win it and kept mentioning it in interviews.

Then she started recruiting younger people who could (at the time) barely play among which Laura. Then a few years later that band dissolved because nobody ever cared and No Joy was born. I strongly suspect Jasamine probably wasn't into shoegaze until Laura came around. Because that former band had nothing to do with No Joy in content or attitude. Laura was super young when i knew her (like underage...which yes made me a creep but it "wasn't like that") but she had already a strong "musical identity" and she hung out with older people (like me), going to shows where they shouldn't have even let her in. I regret i had to fuck up our friendship by getting feelings for her... but isn't that always how it goes? Im glad for her her band is doing well, but kinda resentful Jasamine's tactics finally paid off....

i saw him again recently, he's not in the band anymore and real bitter about it i had to change the subject
