hey dude, sorry I never got back to your PM. The 91 sync is awesome! please post away on it!

I could author a quick DVD (Menus/chapter) of my render as long as Zomb allows it based on lineage. It'd be essentially the same as if I dumped the VHS to DV and did the filtering but I'm not sure how strict they are.

Glad you like the sync and thanks for getting it shared - nice rarity....

WOW. Watch the 2011 Soma and then the Classic Germany Show version. The 2011 one is so slow and lifeless. The crowd is totally still with no reaction. The 1993 one is like a madhouse and the sond sounds totally different.

Rio '96 cleaned up a bit:

Man. Corgan smiling, clearly having fun, showing off, rock-star-posturing with the guitar...James jumping around with his hair all over the place...Jimmy playing like a fucking train about to fly off the rails...the whole band clearly into it and taking risks like no one's watching even though they're playing to a huge arena. Doesn't get any better than that.

Tweaked up a bit....still kinda rough but cool show...

From Archive.org:

"This was a benefit show the band played 3 months prior to the release of Siamese Dream. I imagine the band had just finished the album, as it was recorded in Triclops Studios, also in Atlanta. Very cool show, rarities such as Hello Kitty Kat and Frail and Bedazzled are played.
There is also some funny banter from Billy "whatever you hit me in the face with.. that's being donated to charity too!" and "this song is dedicated to assholes like you, I hope you fucking die!"

On an interesting note, this may be the only show during the 1993-1994 era that Today was not played (unless by some strange reason it was an encore, but all copies of this show apparently have Silverfuck cut after a few seconds; see spfc.org)

In a way, it might be even more sacrilegious for the current band to play this, than some of the other "sacred" tracks.

This is one of the first times SP played the song live. The band hadn't even began recording MCIS, not a single change was made to the arrangement or the lyrics. BTW if you watch a lot of Standard Def videos (360/480p) on youtube in full screen I HIGHLY recommend this script for Chrome/Firefox:

http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/95072

It'll let your browser use the JWPlayer to play youtube videos instead of youtube's default player. JWPlayer is much better at scaling videos w/o pixelating them - the difference at full screen on an HD monitor is really incredible....

Anyway was happy to stumble on that when trying to figure out why most full screen youtube looked so shitty on my monitor....

It looks like D'arcy was sorting out some technical difficulties with her gear with the stage crew during that...she doesn't have her bass during most of it. I wonder if it was just an impromptu little jam they just did while she got her rig fixed.

Yeah, also, Billy is kind of a jerk and almost causes a trainwreck in the middle quiet part of Siva. Gets bored with the lyrics so turns it into a jokey spoken-word thing about James "lead guitarist" wanting to "sprinkle kisses on your heads"...and the rest of the band isn't sure if he's going to go back and actually sing that part, or if that was it. Then Bill gets annoyed that the band doesn't follow, kind of condescendingly says "This is where we go back to the C chord"...everyone's still confused about him changing the lyrics...and he says "Wow, so, all the other band members just have their own agenda, I guess". On stage in front of an arena full of people, that would've been so frustrating for James & D'arcy...and probably pretty terrifying for Matt, being the new guy & not wanting to mess up. He finally just plays the drum fill and goes back into the song...

Nice bit around 1:03:17 when Porcelina has kicked in, where Billy is smiling at James and clearly digging James' guitar work, playing off of him.

Matt was totally legit...there are plenty of times where it's clear there's no comparison to Jimmy, *BUT* there's never a time where he sounds like "Ehh, good enough", unlike Mike Byrne, who seems to just resort to brute force whenever he doesn't know what else to do. I really enjoy listening to how Matt paid careful attention to little key Jimmy parts that are essential to the songs...little high hat accents and important fills. It's obvious Matt studied his ass off to learn these songs and was very detail oriented. Byrne sounds like he's just kind of skimmed over the songs and recycles the same dumb uncreative fills repeatedly.

Jimmy is absent in this video, but it still feels like SP because Matt did his homework. Mike Byrne hasn't picked up on JC's subtleties...he has a generic, generalized idea about it, and that's all. Matt isn't even as flashy, but he grasped the feel of The Smashing Pumpkins soooo much better.

Throwing in La Dolly Vita at the end of Porcelina was great. Love when they'd do stuff like that.

Ava Adore:

http://archive.org/details/tsp2012-08-04.auckland

I saw the Pumpkins in 2008, 2010, and 2012. In 2010 they were in much higher spirits and in 2012 they were in even higher spirits. Ava Adore is performed really well here. Jeff and Billy jam around during the interlude part, then the band jam out the outro. The banter afterwards is really funny too. It's a graet recording, to boot.

You know, judging from all of the concerts SP played as part of the Gish tour in 1992, it really seems as through about 75% of Siamese Dream was complete if not yet committed to record. Clearly most of the songs forming the backbone of the record were already there.

When I first read about the creation of Siamese Dream, the story told about how that album came to be made it sound as though Billy crashed hard after the Gish tour, freaked out about writing a new album that wasn't there, wrote Today because he was freaking out suicidally with writer's block, and then...the rest of the album came.

Well I guess all of that is sort of beside the point...but I was just reminded of it.

A buddy of mine who did/does a ton of concert filming filmed it. Pretty sure he put it out on VHS or maybe DVD around the time. I know he's aware of the pre-FM (and I sent him the dl link off archive). Not sure if he plans to do a synced version. The full (cam audio) version on his channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hsn-mfoAZME - I'll check w/ my buddy to see if he has any intention to sync it in full.....

How did you manage to get the pre-FM? Amazing quality! Was that a lucky break or did you have access to other concert audio like that?

It was a bit of a lucky break. I used to play in local bands in Philly and made friends with some radio folks who had access to the preFM source. I don't know if you've seen the Foo Fighters acoustic preFM from '00 in Philly but I was the source for that too. I think the only other piece I have is a Blindside acoustic session in Philly that I never shared with anyone. I didn't really ask for things, just happened to get 3 great sources through good friends.
