I did not think that girl was ever going to be found. Let alone alive.

I think the drifter actually used to work for the Smart's.

this is probably horrible to say, but, I think there's no way she'd be alive for almost year if he didn't have some sort of sexual relationship going on. that kid is gonna need alot of therapy.

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (CNN) -- Missing teenager Elizabeth Smart, the subject of an intense police hunt since she was reported abducted from her bedroom last summer, was found alive Wednesday and reunited with her family, which never gave up hope she was still alive.

"We just believe in miracles and thank God she's alive," her uncle Tom Smart told CNN by telephone. He also said the girl's father, Ed Smart, "told me she was well."

"I just know she's alive and my brother held her in his arms," Tom Smart said.

Brian David Mitchell, 49, identified as a drifter who did some work in the family's home and had been sought for questioning in the case, is in police custody.

Police said Mitchell -- a bearded self-described prophet who calls himself "Emmanuel" and minsters to the homeless -- and a woman were with the now 15-year-old girl when she was found.

Witnesses said Smart was wearing a wig, sunglasses, a blue overcoat and something resembling a veil or pillowcase. The older couple "was calmly talking to police," said witness John Ferguson.

Police were tipped to Elizabeth's whereabouts by a caller who saw her with two other people pass a billboard with her picture on it identifying her as a missing person.

Elizabeth was abducted at gunpoint from her family's 6,600-square-foot Salt Lake City home June 5, 2002, while her parents and four brothers slept. Her younger sister, Mary Katherine, 9, who was in the bedroom with Elizabeth, witnessed the abduction.

The younger sister said she pretended to be asleep and later said the kidnapper had threatened to hurt Elizabeth if she didn't keep quiet.

In a February 3 statement, the Smart family said Mary Katherine, who previously said the man who kidnapped her sister had seemed familiar, came to her parents in October 2002 and said, "I think I know who it might be."

She identified the man as a person the family knew as "Emmanuel" who had worked at the family home once in November 2001 after they came across him asking for change downtown. The family said he worked at the home for five hours, helping on the roof and raking leaves.

Police later identified him as Brian David Mitchell.

After the abduction, police quickly focused on 48-year-old handyman, Richard Ricci, calling him "a possible suspect." He was never charged with kidnapping and died last August 30 from a brain hemorrhage while in the Utah State Prison on lesser charges of burglary relating to the Smart family. Ricci had denied having any part in the girl's abduction.

Brett Michael Edmunds, a 26-year-old drifter, was also once a focus of the investigation. He was questioned by police in Virginia hospital. No police action resulted.

it is so weird that someone missing for nine months would come back in the community after so long. Ruomors say that she was sexually active and associated with older men. My thought is that maybe she was pregnant and was scared to tell her family and thought that running away would be the answer. Or maybe the Smart family knew she was and didnt want the family or community to know and planed this whole thing out. It 3 days to get pregnant and nine months to carry it. Its akward that she would be missing for the same amont of time that you would carry a baby. Most witnesses say that Elizabeth did not seem that she was in need of help or tried to get attention in any way. take some time to think about this.

Oh my god. She's been missing since last May or something, hasn't she? I remember going camping in Utah and seeing posters and signs about her everywhere. Good to know she's alive... but holy fuck, she has to be seriously fucked up.
