explain to me how land makes the transition from uncharted wilderness to the site of someone's home, or a strip mall, or an orange grove or whatever it's ultimately used for. who initially acquired it? what authority recognized this ownership?

probably started with the agricultural revolution, right? when specific pieces of land started to matter.
