Well Troy's a suburb of Albany, duh.. It'd be like saying I'm not moving to Addisson because my girlfriend lives downtown.

Albany's a shitty town that's pretty much all state jobs for a state that's nearly bankrupt, aim for the n/w burbs or up to Saratoga. It has a ton of seasonal work, and you could even aim for lake Placid in winter for seasonal stuff at first.

And follow Barden's advice on saying you'll be there on a specific date. Know though you'll have to be there for interviews.

Albany is terrible.

What makes it even worse is it should get hammered with good snowstorms, but ends up becoming a rain shield. So you get shitty winter weather and not as much good to show for it but rain puddles that freeze overnight.

Getting a job in a state you don't live in isn't terribly difficult. I've done it several times, in Texas, Utah, Colorado and Washington. Even over the phone interviews. When I left Wa for Co for a job with east-west resorts, I got offered a job at mt baker. I'm like "uh, I'd like to but I'm living just outside of asspen now". They got pretty butthurt about it and wouldn't let me work with them afterward. lol I got blacklisted or whatever

Well I don't know enough about texas to compare it to albany.. but I just know albany was lame. HOWEVER.. I live two hours south east of that in Western MA.. which is a beautiful area, and a great place to live. There's also parts of Vermont that are great. So Albany isn't that great, but there are other areas not too far off from it that are worth moving to.

That probably doesn't help, but if you're coming all the way out this way from Texas, Albany is probably one of the last places you want to consider. But visit the area before you make any choices.. you might end up seeing something in it I haven't.

Renting is true, didn't think about that difference. Just remember your income tax will be 7 percent most likely and Albany iirc has a 8.5 percent sales tax.

Rent is probably somewhat similar to Dallas.

I'm jealous of this kind of move. How awesome would it be to just pack up a few bags and go live wherever you wanted with no strings attached?

Texas is cheap r u 1 of those people that live in a bubble amd don't kno what's going on everwear else, trotz?

no it is cheap to live here, no doubt, but if millions of people can live in new york without worrying about an 8.5% sales tax and a state income tax that probably doesn't apply to ****** then who fucking cares. I believe you also get paid more even for crappy jobs there.

i'm mostly objecting because i'm tired of people complaining about the miniscule taxes we pay as a nation. OMG 8.5% SALES TAX HOLY SHIT IT'S 8.25 IN AUSTIN WHAT A FUCKING JUMP

Yeah I was just kidding really. It's like 9.3% here but our min wage is like 8.85$ and set to go up in January.

damnit, i pay $860/month to live in a tiny bachelor downtown halifax. i can essentially sit on my bed and do my dishes in the sink at the same time. :(

the advantage would clearly be that i can piss in the sink without getting out of bed to goto the bathroom. who sleeps in a sink? that doesn't even make sense.

Have you sought information on the area? Not limited to but including, potentially dangerous wildlife, major contaminants in the soil, water quality, nearby major power sources which could lead to radiation leaks, inclement weather, heaps of children at play, gang activity, hostile nursing home attendees or anything else of import.
