I looooved Crack the Skye but this is leaving me cold for some reason. I'll have to pick it up and give it a chance - they've never done me wrong before. Except for sucking immensely live.

What the effing eff is wrong with Crack the Skye?!

^ They totally got the balance wrong. They traded out meaty riffs, crazy time changes and throaty roaring for overlong noodly guitar solos (some of which were, admittedly, pretty badass) and wailing ozzy vocals. And heaps of the production just sounded flat. Too much clean guitar in the rhythm parts, heaps of the songs were too long, even when they were in face-punching mode it just didn't sound heavy like Blood Mountain did.

the chorus of Curl Of The Burl is lame and I don't understand what the hell that line means but Black Tongue was a great song.

Blood Mountain and Crack The Skye are awesome. Mastodon is the only true metal band I've liked since Fear Factory put out Obsolete back in 98.

Crack The Skye is their best. I like the longer song lengths and clearer vocals as well as quieter moments.

Blood Mountain is pretty great as well. Haven't heard Leviathan though.

Leviathan is way overrated IMO. Remission>Blood Mountain>Leviathan>CTS for me.

Yet another great Mastodon album. I can see why their new direction could rub some of the old fans the wrong way but what the hell were they supposed to do? Crack The Skye sounded to me like a logical conclusion for what they were going for at the time.

"Octopus" is fantastic. Pretty uplifting, yet brutal, riffage there.

Give it a chance. Its a grower.

No, in fact there are two or three songs that are half decent. Rest is absolutely shit. Radio friendly alternative garbage. Songs with 'catchy choruses' that make me want to scratch my eyes out. <i>Just close your eyes! And pretend that everythings fine!</i>

I didn't really like Crack the Skye mostly because it was overproduced and I didn't like the vocals, but that was a really good record compared to this.

After a few spins I'm feeling pretty meh about this. There are a few good moments tucked away in there but not enough content to make a good album. I now pretty much entirely give up on the idea of these guys making another good record.

I can't believe all the hate for Cracke the sky in this thread. It's fantastic.
