View Full Version : Oasis/Pumpkins relation?
where is me 10-25-2010, 07:32 AM Ever come across a reference from oasis to the pumpkins or vice versa? They are both quoted as two bands after their prime, and peaked around some what the same period. Never heard any praise or insults goin' round.
Liam and Billy seem as an odd combination to be chatting together though.
Cool As Ice Cream 10-25-2010, 07:40 AM didn't the pumpkins put a reference to oasis in their speech when they received the one or the other award, i think somewhere in '97? i believe oasis had been claiming they'd win every award that evening or something, but obviously they didn't.
i can't really remember. someone help me.
marrs-guitar 10-25-2010, 07:40 AM In some book or other it tells of Noel visiting them in the studio when they were working on Adore, and Bill took him off for a drive in some new Porsche he'd just got.
There's also this (track 15):
Champagne Supernova tease (http://www.archive.org/details/tsp1996-09-08.ana1)
I'm pretty sure Bill's always talked positively about them and likes them (though I somewhat doubt it's particularly mutual)
RenewRevive 10-25-2010, 07:51 AM Can't find a direct quote, but what Bram is referring to occurred at an Awards ceremony in the mid 90s. iirc someone from Oasis (no doubt Liam or Noel) made some remark that they were now "bigger than the Beatles", obviously paraphrasing Lennon's "bigger than Jesus" statement and Billy said something like "how can a cover's band be bigger than the Beatles?". That kinda thing anyway.
And as far as i know Billy has always said he likes Oasis. No idea if they've ever referred to the Pumpkins though.
where is me 10-25-2010, 07:52 AM thanks for that info.
billy and noel share some characteristics, i guess.
i just read the bio from their first drummer, tony mccarroll, that was an interesting read. recommended if you're interested in creditable background.
geek_xyu 10-25-2010, 08:00 AM I believe it was the Europe VMA's there was a catagory oasis was up against the pumpkins in. Oasis wasn't there to accept the award so either a manager or record executive accepted it for them and stated Oasis was the best band since the Beatles. Later that night the Pumpkins won an award and D`Arcy made a comment that their award should have gone to Oasis due them being the best band since the Beatles..

yes, that sounds familiar.

soniclovenoize 10-25-2010, 12:24 PM I'm fairly certain Liam had called MCIS "shite" in an interview at some point in time...
It was a Morning Glory-era interview, possibly Guitar World.
EDIT:
Oh, Machina and Standing on the Shoulders of Giants were both released on the same day. A pretty terrible day in music.
EyesOfAJackal 10-25-2010, 02:22 PM Oh, Machina and Standing on the Shoulders of Giants were both released on the same day. A pretty terrible day in music.
Both albums that get described as "bloated" quite a bit
Interesting they both came off a similar arc- early '90s critically renowned guitar-fest album with hits, '95 quasi-concept opus, "biggest band in the world" status, declining popularity album, then bloated return attempt
And the Billy/Noel fighting-with-everyone-around-them deal is a great parallel
slunken 10-25-2010, 04:28 PM going from memory I thoght bc slagged them in an interview calling them a retro band or something meaning they were copping the past too much. not foward-thinking enough. may have been in reference to their fans.
Spira|_ 10-25-2010, 05:08 PM I think Billy always said Oasis are stuck in past! :smoke:
Btw today I was listening to some '96 Oasis live performances and they are a masterpice. Love them.
soniclovenoize 10-25-2010, 06:02 PM I was working on a project... To somehow seamlessly edit out 15 minutes or so of Be Here Now, so the album didn't run longer than 60 minutes. So I painstakingly sat and edited out a few bars of music in each song that I felt were unnecessary... I literally cut all the guitar solos down to half the length.
I got down with 2/3rds of the album, and was on track to meet my goal, as I was able to cut, on average, about 1:30 or so per song. But then a thought occurred to me: WHAT THE FUCK AM I EVEN DOING!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
slunken 10-25-2010, 06:55 PM Yea pretty much.

slunken 10-26-2010, 01:02 AM SHUT UP NOOB
Ihaguitar 10-26-2010, 01:22 AM Has Billy ever commented on Blur?
where is me 10-26-2010, 01:39 AM no idea.

I've never heard Giants described as 'bloated'. It was actually the shortest album they made to that point. You're thinking of Be Here Now.
russian iha 11-01-2010, 11:09 AM I remember some James LICD-era interview, where he said that he couldn't get into Oasis for a long time, and then he was reading (WtS)MG liner notes listening to the record circa 1997 and it clicked for him: "yeah, they rock".
antiskum 11-01-2010, 11:25 AM they're all egotistical cunts. so they probably get along swell.

Isn't Be Here Now criminally underrated?
Astur 11-01-2010, 04:15 PM No
Gregbot7000 11-02-2010, 03:24 AM There's a really good album in there somewhere. But it's a bloated mess. Every song stretches on 3 minutes too long. With proper editing, I think that it would have been just as good as their first 2 albums.
wHATcOLOR 11-02-2010, 03:45 AM 'member that video with the helicopters?
where is me 11-02-2010, 04:04 AM yeah, the choppervideo..

eyeboogers 11-09-2010, 07:57 AM The first single from Liam Gallaghers new outfit Beady eye is titled "Bring The Light" :(
soniclovenoize 11-09-2010, 10:02 AM Oh god a Noel Gallagher song without Liam singing it is like a Billy Corgan song without Jimmy drumming on it.
Astur 11-09-2010, 10:04 AM let's just kill everyone and let god sort them out
