I'm getting a lot of design work from your country coming up and I have no idea what to quote.
This is a weird question, but what would an average amount be for a quality design piece?
At the moment I'm doing the front and back cover of an album for a band, and I have no idea what to charge them.
I was thinking like 40 - 50 Euro a piece, is that too much?
I do cool designs, that take days and involve painting and all sorts of things, not weird vector clipart shit, and I charge about R500 for a small quickish 2 day design, and up to R1500 for something more complex.

why wouldn't you just do a currency conversion and figure it out?
or is this just a thinly veiled attempt at making us all think you're so awesome for doing work for bands?

not only bands
GERMAN BANDS

No, cause my whole portfolio is built around bands, including multiple US based acts, and I've never posted any of the works on here to show off or anything.
I want knowledge. I knew what to ask for americans cause I asked some americans.
I dont just want a number conversion, I want to know what kind of prices Germans are comfortable with so I dont under quote and the guys are like, 'Haha, sucker!!'
I'm pretty sure African rates would differ from European ones.

Design work is expensive here. Go for 50 - 100 Euro, depending on the quality of your work.

Wait, what do you mean by "a piece", exactly?
barden
10-13-2010, 08:24 AM
Are you on facebook at the moment Mo?
I'll send you a link or two.
By piece I would mean like, seperate images. If they want to crop one image to use over two things, I dont mind. But if they want 2 seperate indivudual pieces I'd charge for both.
Like this is for the front and back of an album cover. If they want them to be different I'd charge for 2 pieces.

Not that simple. He's got to look at not just the conversion dollar-for-not-dollar, but also mean incomes, costs of living, average t-shirt costs abroad, that sort of thing. 15 dollars in Germoney may be substantially more difficult to come up with if you're a German.
You really have no business sense, do you? This is a global market, Chris. You have to think like a globaller.

haha.
The SA market is crap, and the benchmark is pretty low in general too. I'm trying to get a lot more 'international' work which sets me apart from these local hacks so I can start getting the bigger contracts here.
I'm not bad. I mean, I posted some stuff on netphoria before back when I was shit, but I got way better in the last few years I think.

Haha, I'd have to do about 6 design jobs at 50 euro to pay rent every month. And then there's the other bits of survival. So 50 euro isn't a huge amount, but it's enough to get by if i get consistent work.
I dont know. I suppose without a benchmark its hard to charge too much.
I guess it also depends on how good people think the work is. I have been trying to develop a unique style lately, which can be recognised as my own. I hope.
But yeah, Mo gave me some advice which helped me send them a quote!
Thanks Mo!

i agree that 50 euro seems very cheap for a two day job. if we assume it takes you two days to finish a 50 euro design job and that you get consistent work, you still won't make much, even if you work every day of the month (750 euro for working 30 days non-stop, only 500 euro if you take the weekends off and work an average of 20 days per month).
i wonder, how much do you ask from americans?

yeah, i dont earn a lot. i work part time at a rehersal and pre-production studio which gets me a little bit of stable income every month, but not a lot, and then i make up the difference with designs. It's pretty tight most of the time, but what can you do!
it's also why i am trying to target a new audience and try get better paying clients.
So really, if anyone has anything. I'm pretty cheap. I have a visual style. I'm trying out illustration stuff for publications / papers if i can get into that market too, cause I think it's a way to get my style into a more corporate market, cause those are largely stylised anyway.
And I'm cheap!
Anyone sitting there who sees a bunch of design work going by, they could probably make money subcontracting me. Give me a holla, we can work out some mutually beneficial stuff yo! I dont have any direct access to other markets out there.

go down with the price..check the local art scene market...or use ebay, put it up on reserve, and if it's not met, lower your price. Sorry but I am not fit with art. I could ask someone who knows though. It's always better to demand a higher prize first so you can go down to get a deal.
