When did you first think "uh-oh! Billy is no longer the full shilling. That 5 pence was not paid back in full..."

I think the Machina concept/story thing lost me a little, I know lots of people were spending time making up stories about Glass etc but it didnt interest me at all.

He had to be batshit crazy all this damn time to an extent since his birth. Maybe he got molested or something as a child. I suspect his recent bouts of crazy are due to a midlife crisis.

it actually seems like he's less crazy today than he was a year ago, maybe having a somewhat successful tour has done him some good

Ever since he starting becoming noticeably "spiritual" in his articulated thoughts...
Not exactly bat shit crazy, to be fair, but I could begin to infer the road that was going to be leading him down since around 1998 or so.

Since his mum died then, perhaps?

Average crazy I already knew even before I started listening to his stuff (~99). Disgustingly fucked up when he recorded the worst Zwan songs and got into this positive hippie thinking.

Batshit fucking crazy when I saw him hugging and featuring some old smelly bearded junkie in a video and then open a website to teach his Mystical Molestation techniques.

When I found him whacking in my tool shed in 1994. That's a sight that I only wish I could forget.

I think I finally realized that he was out of his skull around the time of the 20th anniversary shows and Jimmy's departure... but in hind sight, you can hear the crazy underneath the genius of pretty much all his music dating back to the early days.

I wish we could use the word crazy in a purely derogatory sense, it always seems like you could take it as a compliment to Bill. Deranged or fruitcake would work better, but there's still no synonym that couldn't also be viewed in a crazy/genius artist kind of way.

:dammit:

I think before Machina he was more eccentric than crazy. I think most types that are highly creative are at least eccentric as opposed to flat out crazy.

Yeah. Other than having some obvious personality flaws that have already been beaten to death (insecure, egocentric, reactionary, manic depressive, etc.) he actually seemed like a relatively normal, decent guy in his own way. By Machina his expressed thoughts and behaviors started to get a bit :erm: however.

I don't think a more derogatory word is necessary... he didn't chop up little kids or something. He just used to make awesome music and then he lost his mind.

You mean you didn't enter the contest?

I did, though. My thesis was pretty much that the Machina concept failed horribly and they just threw together the best songs and put it out as an album, just as Lifehouse failed and became Who's Next.

I didn't win for some reason...

Uh...you do realize he's occasionally worn dresses onstage since at least as far back as the Gish era, right?

I've been holding out hope that he's either trolling or maybe the persona isn't commensurate with his true personality. but yeah the year or so things have gotten really ermm... and this is coming from somebody who liked every album except for mary star and zieteist, have no qualms with continuing with the SP label, ect

upon watching the videos with uli jon roth. I guess it just took "seeing" it in video form (as opposed to printed interviews) for me to truly believe it

Chicago Songs when he started promoting new age crap, and then he did the poetry reading wearing that tin foil hate with Christmas lights. Up until then I would have called him eccentric, but that's the period where he really went way off the deep end.

suspected: that fucking goddamn fucking fucking assy anime glass and the machines of god shit garbage spew vile trash anime barf sperm garbage cartoon that he half-assedly tried to link up with machina.

confirmed: in 2003 or whenever, when he went on livejournal tirades against every musician he's ever been in a band with. that's what made me truly embarrassed to have been a big fan of his music. so totally shameful and childish. grow the fucking fuck up, pal. stop trying to work out your weird emotions about your shitty, messed up childhood by going teenage apeshit on every person who gets relatively close to you.

not to say anything of the fact that he's still using the smashing pumpkins name to sell tickets for his live show. it's just like some nut wearing his high school quarterback jersey around his hometown when he's 45. beyond sad. sad sad sad.
