View Full Version : Gish-Siamese-MCIS Re-Packaging?

Maybe this is a non-issue right now with the Iha/Wretzky lawsuits from a few years back. Or it's just something Corgan isn't interested in. Who knows. But is there any word out there of any re-packagings of the the first three SP records? The reason I've been wondering about this is because I think maybe now, or even in the next five years, would be a good time to re-release these albums. Other bands have been doing this with some of their material (like Pavement, which is a joke). How cool would it be to have one extra disc added to each album, with rarities and good live cuts relevant to that album? How awesome would it be to hear "Thru The Eyes Of Ruby" from the show at Brixton Academy in 1996? Or a DVD with live stuff? This is what I mean. What the hell is Virgin doing? Maybe this is just wishful thinking on my part, and many others. I know that "The Aeroplane Flies High..." box is the leftovers from MCIS, but there are still nuggets out there (Billy's home demos, plenty of excellent live soundboard recordings) that could comprise another disc's worth of interesting shit. Just wondering what you all might think about this.

Billy sez it's the label's fault that it hasn't happened.

-won't happen
-why is pavement doing it a joke?
-if pavement doing so is a joke, how is it any less of a joke than SP doing so?

I think he meant that Pavement are a joke, aside from the fact that they are reissuing stuff.

These reissues of the first albums, or archive project, or some kind of box set, or a sweet, well compiled, traditional outtakes album is all I really want from them nowadays

I know MCIS was meant to be rereleased with an rearranged tracklist (with some of the b-sides) but of course that never went through. maybe for the 25th anniversary perhaps. I wouldn't hold my breath either way

honestly, I'm more interested in machina being released the way it was intended (with machina I and II as one double album)

That would be really sweet as well. A nice (non-brickwalled) digital remaster of machina as 2 cd album

There's a freeleach at zomb right now. Make your own bonus discs.

To be honest, I like some of Pavement's stuff, more on a song-by-song basis, instead of by albums. I guess I'm sort of old-school about albums; I like stuff with continuity and a unique overall thread (i.e. Abbey Road, Siamese Dream, etc). When compared with SP's albums, to me anyway, Pavement's albums just aren't as strong overall. Not that it is all bad music. It's hard to explain. Pavement did that whole indie slacker thing well, I guess, and sort of spit at convention. The Pumpkins did the same, but in a much more advanced musical way, and that just appeals to me more. I'm not into punk or off-shoots of it, and Pavement has that vibe in some of their stuff.
I really hope I didn't offend Pavement fans here. The joke comment wasn't called for. I respect people's musical tastes. If you are a fan of Insane Clown Posse though, I have no respect for you.

I bet that some of the extra material is decent. Haven't heard it yet. Of all their albums, I like "Crooked Rain..." the most. The others have a few good songs between them, but just don't do as much for me I guess. I did see Malkmus & The Jicks years ago in Boston, and it was a pretty good show.

I did mean that originally, and now feel bad about it, not taking into consideration the Pavement fans out there. I don't hate Pavement or avoid them completely, it's just that, as an audiophile and musician, three of my all-time favorite albums are Gish-Siamese-MCIS; I love Pisces, Adore, and Machina too, am a little lukewarm with Zeitgiest, and so far like Teargarden. I used Pavement as a quick example of a '90's band that has re-issued material. Also, sometimes Malkmus just annoys me with his smarmy, indie-snob attitude, but that is just my opinion. Thurston Moore can be like that too, among others. But I respect them for their different ideas with music.

My hope is that the band pushes forward to at the very least COMPLETE teargarden by kaleidyscope... compile that into a wonderfully packaged box with some vinyl, cd's, dvd's, a book with artwork/photos, and a separate book with lyrics... really "trippy" and psychedelic-looking

AFTER that, then billy can go back over the ol' catalogue and start compiling some "ERA" boxsets, like a Gish box set (1988-1992) and SD box and MCIS box, etc etc and package them equally as awesome as the TbK box... except these "era" boxes will probably have much stronger material... ANYWAY! I say finish TbK then release TOTALLY FUCKING AWESOME boxsets... not just a cd with some live cuts and a b-side or a dvd of shit on youtube... c'mon! i'd only accept an extra disc with mellon collie if it was a dvd of those totally epic double door shows or one of those 2-set pijama shows from the early mellon collie tour...

word.

i'd actually rather not have re-issues because billy is a nut nowadays. he would probably put some teargarden c-sides and put a live 2007 daydream version in the gish re-issue, and then replace the faces of the original members with tila tequila, sky saxon and linda strawberry. whatever legacy the original band had has already been sullied enough.

besides, billy can't deliver on stuff even when he does want to, and does have the control.

I really hope they take Siamese and totally compress the fuck out of it and make it twice as loud. I really hate how I have to turn the volume up and down so much on Soma. It should just be totally loud all the time.

Totally. Plus the albums will surely get LOUD treatment, and I'm really scared to hear Siamese Dream clipping as hell. It seems that nowadays "remaster" means only that and nothing else.

Agree. The Hendrix re-masters released in March of this year are pretty much the same as the re-issues from 1997-98. The Beatles 2009 re-masters do have some differences, but usually only hard-core Beatle fans can tell the nuances. Those sound very good. I say leave Gish and Siamese alone, they sound awesome; maybe nudge the volume a bit on MCIS (the compression, especially on the heavier songs, seems to suffocate the volume). Adore is fine, and Machina is pristine.
