I've got time for one more and I haven't seen a single episode of any one of these. From what I've seen of Alan Ball (American Beauty etc.) I'm temped to go with Six Feet Under, but I'm curious of the average netphorian's preference. My taste tends to mesh quite well with what I hear people liking here.

What say you?

Haven't seen The Wire. But you will not regret barreling through Six Feet Under.

I've only seen a little of Six Feet Under, but what i saw was good. Dexter isn't hugely clever but it's dark and quite funny at times, quirky. The Wire is huge and sprawling, very well written with some great characters, but much tougher going.

Dexter's first two seasons are quite good. A lot of filler storylines though, and the whole narrative/psychological concept is gradually wasted in favor of more adventure content. And 3rd season is bad beyond comparision.

I would suggest to watch Mad Men, probably the best tv series ever (1st and 3rd seasons are brilliant).

In the Tibetan philosophy, Sylvia Plath sense of the word, we're all dying soon. But I'm not dying the way Chloe is dying.

Thought about it. So the show has an appeal that goes beyond Christina Hendricks' breasts?

Mad Men is spectacular, but it's a bit of a slow burn. So be ready for that.

top three shows you need to watch:

The Wire
Mad Men
Breaking Bad

the Wire and Mad Men definitely take a while to get going, but they're fantastic

Its cinematography, hypnotizing slowburning plot, style and detail are mesmerizing. Christina is just a part of a huge picture there.

There is a couple of difficulties: the tempo becomes a bit lethargic at times, though you get used to it really fast. And second, there is some overuse of sex and promiscuity, I mean, that's cool, but it kind of bores in some episodes, and the whole capitalist-enterprise storyline is a lot more entertaining. 2nd season is dragged and slowed down by it all, but once you get to 3rd season - you'll see how amazing it is.

Six Feet Under, then Dexter. Mainly because Six Feet Under has ended already. I watched the first season of The Wire but didn't watch the other seasons.

It took me a while to get used to him as Dexter and not David Fisher. David Fisher is cute, for sure, but Dexter is hot. Especially when he's wearing his killin' shirt and killin' gloves.

Can't speak to whether The Wire is worth a watch, but between Dexter and SFU I think I'd give the nod to Dexter. SFU was well done and very well acted in places, but IMO almost all of the characters are such miserable, pretentious, and mostly just terrible people that I can't really recommend the show to anyone if they're looking for a pleasurable viewing experience. I just don't think the time you have to spend with the characters is worth the payoff, no matter how good the final episode was.

Dexter is just a lot more of a fun ride. It's kinda light and hokey in a lot of places, but the acting and the characters bring it along. And when it's good, it's really good and makes you desperate to see what's going to happen next. You could probably easily blow through all 4 seasons of Dexter before you slog your way through one season of SFU.

Dexter is amazing and really fun.

The Wire is truly fantastic as well but more of a realistic drama.

I have never seen Six Feet Under so I can't comment on it.

You should check out Frasier though.
Best sitcom EVER imo.

Since we're talking about Dexter, I must say that I really miss the early seasons with Doakes and how everybody looked sweaty when they were outside. It was a nice touch for being set in Miami, and now not as much.
