the more i think about it, the more awkward it seems. "<i>Dear</i>"?!?!?!? sounds weird right... u dont call the person dear, so why would u call them that in email

I adjust my emails to the recipient. My girlfriend gets "Hi princess, ..." or something, and my professors just get "Dr. Jackass, ..." You get the idea.

But I don't often need any kind of formality so I guess I'm of no help.

This is how I usually begin an email as well. I think it's formal enough for most circumstances. Of course at my school I could begin an email to a professor with, "Hi Brandi," and that would be totally normal, so maybe don't take my liberal artfag advice.
