so if i remember correctly i believe there are a few austinites here. im going to be moving there for an internship/coop may-dec. i'll be in the southwest side of town and i need to find a place to live. so if you guys have any ideas / want to talk about the area feel free. im pretty excited about it, especially getting to see some good shows more than once a year

yeah it's pretty much the best place to live. if you're southwest I'm assuming you're off mopac or 360? plenty of nice apartments around there, you'll be fine. the only really expensive stuff is right next to campus. (or fancy condos of course).

I wanna move back to Austin, too. Love that city. And one of my best friends and his gf just bought a house down there. It's out the middle of fucking nowhere (to me), but it's nice

Hey TuralyonW3,

Have you used your new overbudget, behind schedule fancy light rail that just opened to the public yet?

i dont really mind just looking for something affordable. Its AMD and they gave me a list of apartments and they were all in the 700-1000/month range and the only furnished one they had was 2500 : / (ive never lived outside of a dorm so I dont have any furniture) So it looks like im gonna have to find an unfurnished place and throw together some furniture within my two days between the end of finals and start of work. I donno if Im spoiled by springfield/champaign prices or what. Im guessing they recommended all the expensive stuff and i just need to loook harder

03-24-2010, 07:38 AM
oh yeah, there's definitely cheaper stuff there

Its possible to find a one bedroom for around $500 a month. My coworker said he had been looking around i-35 and 71 and saw a handful of one bedrooms in that price range.

not sure what city you're coming from.... it's a great city as a whole

a little slow paced for my blood. I'll be moving years end but the past few years have been good ones. Very good job market, traffic is minimal, above par nightlife. You should have fun.

traffic is minimal? You're completely insane.

Traffic blows there, mostly because of the narrow streets in the city center and 35 being the main/only thoroughfare that goes north/south (unless that tollway eased some of that, which i doubt).

Don't get me wrong, I love the city and would love to move back, but traffic and parking are awful.

I forget what the ranking was but austin was recently rated somewhere between the top 10-20 for most congested city. Its not that bad when you know alternate routes and what times to avoid which roads. Mopac gets just as bad as 35 during rush hour, but it won't take more than 40 minutes to get from one side of town to the other during rush hour. Maybe an hour on a bad day. Knowing the area really helps on timing commutes.
its ridiculous how fast the high rises are going up downtown, and the city is definitely struggling with keeping up, but its not so bad. Maybe its just because I'm from houston?

yeah, I'm from Dallas, and Austin traffic makes me crazy. I think the biggest reason why it makes me crazy is that in Dallas we've got TONS of highways to use as back routes, but in Austin, you've only got a few, and any other back route must be city streets, for the most part, so even if you know your way around, you've got stop lights and cyclists and pedestrians and whatnot.

The longer I'm there, the more accustomed to it I get, but my first week or two down there it's awful.

I'll be in Austin in two weeks. I plan to rape agenda suicide and stab Brendon in the neck.

Or, you know, eat at Torchy's and taco deli until I can't eat any more.

its on the intersection of southwest and william cannon drive, just west of barton creek wilderness. I figured I'd just take the bus everywhere but my parents think I should look into getting a car so i dont "feel isolated and get depressed"

I rode the bus for 9 months while living in south east austin. It took me nearly an hour and 45 minutes each way to get to and from work. It was a 20 minute drive. For God's sake, bring a car if you're able. Doesn't mean you have to use it all the time.

900s are the express routes. Limited stops and weekday only service, and I think they're even a bit pricier than regular routes. Might as well not be one.

ryan patrick
03-25-2010, 05:16 PM
Yeah 970 is a flyer route that is pretty much useless unless you're going from the oak hill park & ride to downtown
