View Full Version : just totaled my (new) car

ow ow ow I hurt.

It was a great little car, though, even though I only had it for about 10 months. Have comprehensive/collision/gap insurance, so hopefully everything will be okay and I can get another new little car that's just as cute and JUST AS SAFE.

I hit a concrete median headfirst going about 45-50 mph and I'm totally fine, except for a bruised/swollen knee and seatbelt rash and bruise.

Hit ice on the Tollway from that freak snow yesterday. The entire rest of the road seemed to be free of it, except for that one bit I hit.

Oh ouch... I can't believe the roads iced and the snow stuck after it was 70 FUCKING DEGREES on Friday.

this could have been prevented had you not been wearing your seatbelt

Maybe totaling your car prevented something much worse from happening. If so, excellent work.

If I've learned anything from my family, it's that the appropriate response is to buy a Mercedes. Get one from the 80s and it'll last until you're in your 80s...if you're prepared to spend lots of money to keep it running.

Every e46 in existence is currently driven by a Jersey guido.

But e36s are like the second coming of the ultimate white trash car.

nah, I swerved into a van after I hit the ice, then I spun around twice and then ended up in the barrier.

The guy in van was really fucking nice. Made me get out of my car because it's not safe to sit in your car, which is turned sideways on a 70-mph tollway, and sit in his van because it was warm.

oh, and I had to go back to the Dr really quick last night because I got out of the shower, and I was taking my hair out of a towel and I felt a weird POP in my chest. And then there was this awful awful radiating pain and I almost passed out. I seriously thought I broke a rib.

I guess it was just some kind of muscle moving around in there because they did more x-rays and there was no full fracture to the rib. Maybe a small crack, though.

It hurts to get up, breathe deeply, bend over, sit down.. basically everything.

murgle
03-23-2010, 03:15 PM
I already found a new car, too.

I'm holding off on getting it until all the insurance stuff is settled with this one, though. Which kind of sucks, because by the time that's all settled, the car might be gone. It's not that I CAN'T get it now, but I want to see what the insurance co is going to give me for my old car. I know it's going to pay off the entire note, but if they give me KBB value for the car, I'll actually get about $1500 extra, which I want to use to put down on a new car to get my payments down lower.

sad. just heard from the insurance adjuster. after they take out my deductible, the settlement will pay off the car and give me $155. So I'm glad that the car's paid off, and I don't have to file a gap insurance claim, and I'm glad that they're taking the deductible out of the settlement so I don't have to pay it up front, but I wish they would've valued my car a little higher so I could go back to the dealer with some cash for a down payment.

Oh well. At least its paid. Dude had some more questions, but I asked him to call back tomorrow because of my pain meds. haha

So, are you getting a new car or just another car? New cars just seem like a huge waste of money.

well, the car I totaled was a 2007, but I just bought it in May.

I actually already found a replacement.. it's a 2007, too. Exact same make and model I had before. Fewer miles, too. The problem is that I don't have a down payment this time I like I did before, and this car is $2k more than mine was because it has half the miles mine did. My payment would be $50 higher (which is actually a really good deal) and I was dealing with all of this about 24 hours after the accident and it was just too fucking much.

I wasn't on any pain meds and I was really really sore and I was still a little in shock that it had all happened, so I just went home.

If that car is still there when I am ready to deal with all of it, then I'll get it. If it's not, I'll get something else.

fucking VW finally realized that they paid too much for the car I want to buy. Looks like they know they're not going to get what they want for it. They've dropped the price over $2k since I was there on Monday.

If they drop it another $1100-$1200, I'll go buy it today.

Fuckers.

duovamp
03-27-2010, 04:49 PM
Normally the price of every vehicle drops 1500-2000 when someone asks about it. It's a built-in markup to make you feel like you got a great deal. It's also there on the off chance a compete idiot wants to pay that price off the bat.

murgle
03-27-2010, 06:41 PM
This is a used car. They wouldn't even give a better deal to an employee (family friend who was helping-- he sold me the car I just totalled and got me a really good deal on it).

They flat out paid too much for it and now they've given up on getting what they put into it.

duovamp
03-27-2010, 06:48 PM
lol

1. I know it's used.
2. I know how buying cars works.

EVERY car you ever buy, if it costs 46k or 12k has 1-2k of immediate markup that will instantly come off the second you ask "So, what kind of price can I get on this car?" The sticker price always always always changes. That's how it works.

murgle
03-27-2010, 06:54 PM
Yeah. When I asked about it, they gave me a price that was about $1500 less than the internet price was, then the day after I walked away, the price they gave me was online. Now, it's about $1500 less than that price.

They close at 830. I'm thinking of going in at 8 and telling them what I'll pay for it right then, otherwise it's going to sit on their lot til at least Monday.

03-27-2010, 06:55 PM

duovamp
03-27-2010, 08:31 PM
I gotcha. Just say "I will pay you X today, right now." That's what the salesman wants to hear. He'd rather make 250 dollars on a car today than risk making 500 by next week or nothing at all. If you say that you will be there to sign the papers for the amount you want, no questions asked, if it's in reason they will hop on it. Good luck.
