Killer groove with beautiful guitars and drums, and a perfectly driving bassline. Lyrically and musically this song is bliss. I got to hear it live once and it made my day. I didn't know this song existed until like 2004 though. I wasted my life up until then.

Let's hear some love for this track, you little fucks!!!

(Also idgaf if this thread has been made a billion times, it needs to be made infinity times - and you can't search for the terms "set" "ray" or "to" either, even if you use "set the ray to jerry" all in quotes..)

I recently read some review on TAFH and said that Set the Ray was the worst from the 1979 single. Fuck them.

Have you listened to the '92 demo? It's awesome as well.

i hadn't listened to this song since the "revival" or whatever you want to call it. this song embodies the spirit of the old pumpkins. truly amazing.

also, jimmy's drumming is so understated and graceful. gotta love it. it will be missed.

it embodies that spirit so well because it's got all four members playing on it, live.. which imo is the best way to hear the smashing pumpkins.

and yes, one of jimmy's finest pumpkins moments.

Ugh. It is a beautiful song, but I associate it with some of the saddest and darkest months of my life. It was then when I discovered the song on Judas 0. This, Winterlong, Waiting and a few others make me feel :cry::cry:

It is a great track...I saw it live too and I believe it was the first time they played it since 97 or 98? So I was going bazurk.

Or maybe that's when I heard Radiohead play Talk Show Host live...I can't remember now.

I dunno, sometimes I think that says it all. "I want you/I need you" is exactly how you feel sometimes, simple as it may be. But he sings it rather Billy-esque, and I love that. It's more than just "I want you/I need you" ya know?

I've heard the version from QaoS, but is there any evidence of a studio version from the Siamese Dream recording sessions existing??? That would be pretty cool.

Also, one of the few Pumpkins songs that has been covered decently. What was that band called? Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer or something?

I prefer "today" to STRTJ, I also prefer plume to STRTJ. BUT I prefer plume to today. StRTJ is better than blew away though. Then there is the comparison of STRTJ and Disarm. This is a virtual tie in my book. Some days I like STRTJ better, somedays Disarm....guess it depends on my mood. If I compare STRTJ to Bleeding the Orchid....no contest, Bleeding the Orchid ROCKS!! Once I broke up with a girlfriend while driving in my car to it!!! Maybe that is why I like BTO so much!! She was a real bitch and orchids are so beautiful. And to bleed an orchid.....what exactly does that mean anyway? To me it meant that this beautiful girl riding shotgun...i wish she would bleed. Maybe she was already that day and hence the breakup. Enough of that. Lets take a Zwan song and compare it to STRTJ. How about baby lets rock....good song but doesnt have the depth of STRTJ so I go with STRTJ on this one. XYU kicks STRTJ's ass!!! No contest. One time at band camp....we tried to play XYU and what a fiasco!! We couldnt play STRTJ because we didnt have a bass guitar. O well, I asked the camp counselor if he knew of anyone who had one. And he said no, unfortunately, or we probably would have tried to play STRTJ since it was duovamp's favorite song on TAFH. What is a duovamp anyway? I do know vamps are gay, and to be a duo-vamp...meaning 2 vamps? Kinda confusing. This is in a nutshell what I think about STRTJ. I could really go on all day long, let me know if you really want to know more about my feelings of STRTJ...... Scale of 1-10 I give it about a 7.8

What's your source on that? No way Billy would dump Ruby after the insane amount of production put into it

I was referring to this:

"Another remnant of a distant Siamese Dream past, 'Set the Ray to Jerry' was first written somewhere during the Gish tour. It's always been a band favorite, and seemingly only the band's, because no one ever mentions it. A sweet, simple song featuring only bass, drums, and some delayed James guitar. One night Flood and I put everything we had on a couple of tapes (about 40 songs) and just drove around Chicago until 3:30 in the morning deciding what was on or off the album. When we listened to 'Set the Ray,' it really moved me, but when I looked over to Flood he just shook his head no. That was the end of 'Set the Ray' on the album, because I trust Flood's opinion so much."
