View Full Version : Buying a laptop - Toshiba?
RopeyLopey 08-31-2009, 11:19 PM I need a laptop and I saw this:
Future Shop: Computers: Laptops: Toshiba Satellite 16" Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 2GHz Laptop (L500-00Y) - Future Shop Exclusive (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?sku_id=0665000FS10125726&logon=&langid=EN)
I only need over 3 GB of RAM and to run ENVI/IDL, MS Visual C++, and Office on that. I don't care if it is heavy as long as it lasts few years.
Any suggestions, experiences with Toshiba?
AndySlash 08-31-2009, 11:46 PM I haven't owned one, but I've used two different Satellite models for work and thought they were pretty good. I'd not hesitate to buy one if I was considering it.
hcueva 09-01-2009, 12:54 AM I had one waaay back in the day (Satellite 22XCDS) and it lasted a good while.
Why not Dell, however? I'm myself a Mac fanboy, but I've recently been amazed by the Dell laptop they gave me at work.
threetwooneZERO 09-01-2009, 01:20 AM Stay away from IBM. I hate mine. I haven't heard much about Toshiba, but if don't get sucked into the extra warranty at Future Shop.
Nimrod's Son 09-01-2009, 01:20 AM dude i am not even looking for laptops but this came in my email today and it seems like a much better deal
Sony VAIO VGN-NW120J/S Notebook PC at CircuitCity.com (http://www.circuitcity.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4779367&sku=S170-15507&SRCCODE=CCEM097C+&cm_mmc=EML-_-Main-_-CCEM097-_-circuit97)
Nimrod's Son 09-01-2009, 01:20 AM Also with Toshiba if anything goes wrong you have to pay to ship it to them. At least Sony will send you a prepaid box.
threetwooneZERO 09-01-2009, 01:28 AM Sony's battery life > Toshiba
ohnoitsbonnie 09-01-2009, 04:12 AM 2-3 hours D: seriously?
ChristHimself! 09-01-2009, 04:58 AM my current lappy is a satellite pro and i'm really happy with it
publius clodius 09-01-2009, 05:09 AM you should buy marvel instead
Pizza Club 09-01-2009, 07:14 AM We've had pretty good luck with Toshibas at work. I work in the IT Department, so I see what we have to replace the most and Toshiba is pretty low on the list of brands that cause headaches for us.
RopeyLopey 09-01-2009, 08:19 AM Also with Toshiba if anything goes wrong you have to pay to ship it to them. At least Sony will send you a prepaid box.I wonder if they would send the pre-paid box to Europe as well (for a laptop purchased in North America).

JokeyLoki 09-01-2009, 08:38 AM My experience with Toshiba sucked. The screen feel apart after a few months and had to be replaced, and it was overall a shitty laptop. That was a few years ago though.
Pizza Club 09-01-2009, 08:56 AM what's on the top?
Dell
HP
Lenovo
Toshiba
In that order, in our experiences. There's a lot of reasons why it happens to be like this and it's just our mid-sized district I can speak for.
RopeyLopey 09-01-2009, 09:14 AM dude i am not even looking for laptops but this came in my email today and it seems like a much better deal
Sony VAIO VGN-NW120J/S Notebook PC at CircuitCity.com (http://www.circuitcity.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4779367&sku=S170-15507&SRCCODE=CCEM097C+&cm_mmc=EML-_-Main-_-CCEM097-_-circuit97)that one costs 999 CAN dollars here.
I also looked into this one:
Future Shop: Computers: Laptops: Sony VAIO 15.5" Intel Centrino Pentium Duo T4200 2.1GHz Laptop (VGNNW110DT) (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10127861&catid=25315)
I don't know if the difference between the processors and Toshiba and Sony is worth this price difference (about 150 dollars).
sppunk 09-01-2009, 09:24 AM Lenovo is by far the best, but Toshiba has pretty good hardware.
Don't buy a Dell laptop, whatever you do.
Mooney 09-01-2009, 10:43 AM i've got a dell xps m1330. i bought it becuase it was small and light (13.3" screen, less than 4lbs.) and has hdmi.
the graphics card went in it, or something but i was pretty surprised with their customer service. they sent me a box to pack it in, which i sent to them at like 4pm on friday and i had the computer back fixed on tuesday, i believe.
better than new 09-01-2009, 10:47 AM Stay away from IBM. I hate mine. I haven't heard much about Toshiba, but if don't get sucked into the extra warranty at Future Shop.
Thinkpads have always been an awesome experience for me, I don't know why you would say this. And I agree completely with the others that said absolutely do not go with a Dell. Those pieces of shit literally fall apart within 2 years. The hinges pop and the screen comes off. If your heart is set on a PC I haven't heard any fuss from Toshiba owners, but then again I haven't seen too many.
threetwooneZERO 09-01-2009, 02:02 PM Ropey I just got this email from BestBuy.ca

threetwooneZERO 09-01-2009, 11:53 PM thank you very much! I think it will between these two, then.
I'm glad to be of service.
Tchocky 09-02-2009, 12:04 AM My friend has an Toshiba lappy that's almost 6 years old and is running a Celeron processor...he loves the damn thing and is heartbroken that it's finally gotten to the point where he'll probably have to replace it in the not-too-distant future (he doesn't use it for anything other than word processing and the like at his bio lab; that's why it's lasted this long). He says it was very reliable and he almost never had any problems with it. My sister has a Toshiba laptop as well and likewise, she has nothing but positive things to say about hers.
I use a cheap-ass Acer. A friend of mine keeps insisting that he read somewhere reputable that they're pretty reliable, but this thing has been quirky almost ever since I bought it. It's almost three years old...I'm going to try to squeeze at least one more year out of it before I upgrade, but I desperately need to increase the RAM on this thing. FWIW, I've almost never had a major problem with it (quirkiness aside).
Nimrod's Son 09-02-2009, 01:53 AM I wonder if they would send the pre-paid box to Europe as well (for a laptop purchased in North America).
No. If you purchase in NA your warrantee is good in NA. This is true of all of the companies. You'd have to pay to ship it back.
Nimrod's Son 09-02-2009, 01:54 AM 14" monitor? why not just get an iphone?

Which acer do you own?
ChristHimself! 11-18-2009, 05:06 PM my acer was fine until i stood on it
threetwooneZERO 11-18-2009, 05:15 PM I'm looking at the new Acer Timeline series. Is anyone using currently using any of these?

Dogfighter28 11-18-2009, 05:18 PM As a member of the Geek Squad I would recommend staying away from Acers and Toshibas. Sony and HP seem to be the best in our store right now.
You? A member of the geek squad? Fucking LOL
JokeyLoki 11-18-2009, 05:29 PM I've got an Acer 4720Z, I don't use it for anything except email and sometimes Photoshop. Works just fine, haven't had a problem with it so far.
I wouldn't recommend it for any kind of gaming, though.
waltermcphilp 11-18-2009, 05:33 PM I have a Toshiba Satellite, it is about 5 years old and still runs fine. It does, however, get pretty warm - it actually shut down once due to overheating. I would like to upgrade, but I am poor, so I will stay with this bitch until it dies.
Dogfighter28 11-18-2009, 05:35 PM You can get a computer 10x better than the one you have for like 500 bucks nowadays
sickbadthing 11-18-2009, 05:40 PM i have an HP for work
intel core 2 duo 2.2GHZ with 4GB ram AND IT IS A FUCKING PIECE OF SHIT
sickbadthing 11-18-2009, 05:41 PM You can get a computer 10x better than the one you have for like 500 bucks nowadays
are you really part of the geek squad? that sounds pretty rad, fixing old people's computers and all.
Dogfighter28 11-18-2009, 05:46 PM We had an interesting lady come in the other day. She took a cab to Best Buy because she just got a DUI. She said her new printer wasn't compatible with her computer and that the sales person had lied to her.
She had installed it wrong. There is a warning printed on the disc saying if you have Windows 7, go to this website for the correct drivers. She was alternating between hysterical laughter and intense sobbing throughout this diagnostic process.
When I opened up the printer initially the ribbon was torn. When questioned, she said she had not opened up the printer at all. Funny how the ink was installed, then.
While I was fixing the driver issue she went and got a Subway sandwich. I turned around and she was eating it at our counter, and it smelled like garlic and onions when she asked me a hundred retarted questions.
The worst part of my job, however, is the look of distrust on the faces of senior citizens and black people. It's enough to make you feel like a thimble.
Gossamer 11-18-2009, 05:47 PM I have a Toshiba laptop and it's served me very well for the amount of abuse I've put it through in the last 2 years.
In terms of actual battery life it has ZERO, so if you actually want to take it places where there is no electrical source you will be SOL.
ALSO you need to buy some kind of cooling pad because they will overheat like a motherfucker if you use it all the time.
brendo_91 11-18-2009, 08:53 PM lenovo > hp > compaq > toshiba > everything else > acer and asus
i would avoid asus like the plague, we bought 20 and 15 had to go for repairs in the first year or so. acer seem to be equally shit.
dell... i ahven't used any modern dells so i couldn't tell you. they used to suck hard, especially the power supplies.
toshiba... meh, i'm not a huge fan, the trackpads seem too glossy and the screen hinges are too floppy, if they still use the one-hinge-in-the-middle design.
we use lenovo at work and they're constantly getting put into roadcases and thrown around the back of a truck. they work fine. i strongly doubt some other laptops would hold up quite as well.
threetwooneZERO 11-18-2009, 09:35 PM I currently have a 3 year old ibm thinkpad, yes it is built sturdy but it's shitty. the battery life is horrible and it's a 17" monster.
I'm looking for something that is ultra portable for school, mailing email, browsing and word. I like those new Acer timeline series because it gives me everything that I need and the price is right. Another main reason I like them is the extended battery life. I'm sure 8 hours in unrealistic but compared to my IBM that has 1.5 hours...what an upgrade.
This was an interesting post from engadget.com about laptop reliability.
Laptop reliability survey: ASUS and Toshiba win, HP fails (http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/17/laptop-reliability-survey-asus-and-toshiba-win-hp-fails/)

i think i may just hate laptops all together. eh no i hate HP too.
part of it is the junk fucking software they have on it for encryption and shit that makes it take 20 minutes to start up and before i can even fucking load IE (i have to use it for certain applications) i have to wait and wait and wait FOR IT TO DO WHAT??? MOTHERFUCKING PIECE OF SHIT HP FUCKING GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!! oh and the video card WHAT THE FUCK WHY DOES JPGS LOOK LIKE SHIT??? MOTHER FUCKING CHRIST HOW MUCH DID THIS THING COST BECAUSE MY COMPANY GOT FUCKING RIPPED OFF!!!
Dogfighter28 11-19-2009, 01:07 AM I have a new HP and it boots in like 10 seconds
You can remove the junk fucking software in about 5 mins and it comes on every new computer
threetwooneZERO 11-19-2009, 01:08 AM Dogfighter, do you know if BB getting the new Acer Timeline series?
Dogfighter28 11-19-2009, 01:10 AM I don't know. All I know is every Acer i've put my hands on, whether it be a new computer I'm doing pre-setup on or an old one in for repair, has sucked.
Thanks for reminding me I need to watch the new season of Curb.

Dogfighter28 11-19-2009, 02:04 AM I got my HP Pavilion laptop for $632 (including tax). It has 4gb RAM, 320 gb high speed HDD, ATI Radeon Mobility Graphics, 2.2 ghz duo core processor, 14" screen, with Windows 7. I have never been happier with a new computer.

I don't like it when people talk about their computers like this because it doesn't mean too much. What kind of ram? What speed is the harddrive at? Who makes the processor? Which version of windows? Did it even come with a wireless n card? Apparently hp makes you pay for that

That's what I thought when my girlfriend bought a laptop from the HP Pavilion dv6000 series two years ago. But many of those were shipped with a defective motherboard that got fried after only a few months. First the wireless adapter stopped working properly, then the keyboard, then it wouldn't start.
HP did extend the warranty, but as far as I know they replace the fried motherboard with new defective ones. I hope they've fixed this issue in newer Pavilion models. It's a really good laptop otherwise.
Charmbag 11-21-2009, 03:25 PM I have a Lenovo now and I'm pretty sure i could throw it down 4 flights of concrete stairs and it would come out fully functioning. I bought it because I'm clumsy as hell and because of its chic retro design. I still miss my Mac though. a lot
