It's nice to see someone else with Bows and Arrows on their list.

I've always found Antics to be a much better album than TOTBL. It's a more emotive, bold, creative piece of work.

Antics is a good album but they the bass was too quiet and the overall vibe is too happy. Although the opening song and Not Even Jail are phenomenal.

Crow Left of Murder is Incubus's best album so props for that.

Eagles of Death Metal - Peace, Love, Death Metal

Radiohead - Kid A...

...and even though it'll probably get me laughed at, I've gotta list System of a Down - Toxicity here as well. It's shallow as fuck, but like my Eagles of Death Metal pick, it's just a fun album that I still enjoy from time to time.

I don't think it is. While unexpected, timely, and has some of Radiohead's best work.. it still has too many weak songs. Namely Treefingers.. bland and boring and In Limbo. In Rainbows doesn't really have any lows and reaches about every high that Kid A had minus The National Anthem.

OK Computer is the only Radiohead album that earns the title ONE OF THE BEST EVER.

Trotskilicious

I would agree that there is some natural progression there, but I would hardly say that In Rainbows presents "nothing new" sonically. In Rainbows is a calculated move back to guitar "rock", except it is stylistically NOTHING like their earlier rock records. Anyway, it is less related to Kid A sonically than say, Siamese Dream is to Mellon Collie.

Right now I'm going with:

Damien Rice - 0 (amazing debut, should've never made that other album)
Bright Eyes - Wide Awake
Tool - 10,000 Days (not a popular opinion to have but to me this is their strongest work yet. Natural progress from Lateralus. A rewarding listen even years after its release)
Elliott Smith - Figure 8 (I'm expecting a few "didn't realize that came out this decade" posts. Come to think of it, I might just prefer New Moon of Elliott's releases this decade, but that's old stuff)
Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers (holy shit I didn't see this one coming, never in a million years would I have expected the Manics to release an album on par with the Holy Bible in 2009)
Porcupine Tree - Fear of a blank planet (the best album I've heard in a couple of years)

Mastodon is probably one of the best bands of the decade, so I have to add at least Crack the Skye and Blood Mountain to my list.

forgotten child saying 2010 is one of the 00's doesn't make any sense man

i know technically the millennium started in 2001 but that decades go from 00 through 09 hence the first digit being 0 which is something '10 doesn't have. that would be the first year of the 10s decade.

to be fair, if i followed your criteria that the decade goes from 01-10 then i would give you pos rep for not saying In Rainbows since I liked HTTT more and probably should have put it on my list since it is pretty damn good

Those're exactly my thoughts... the "world started" at year 1 (there was no year zero)... so the first decade is from 1 to 10, the second decade is from 11 to 20 so this decade is from 2001 to 2010.

That's exactly why the millennium started in 2001 and a new century also started in 2001 and so a new decade started in 2001.

And if you wanna know: Ok Computer > Kid A > HTTT > The Bends > Amnesiac > In Rainbows > Pablo Honey.

I don't see how there being "no year zero" is relevant to the chronological divisions our culture is used to. 1990 was not part of the 80s.

Maybe just because a decade just could be a period of 10 years. And you just have a period of ten years counting from 1 to 10, not from 0 to 9 or even from 1 to 9.

Maybe just because a decade just could be a period of 10 years. And you just have a period of ten years counting from 1 to 10, not from 0 to 9 or even from 1 to 9.

yeah so why don't you just say the decade goes from 05-14 i mean whatever right

we don't count decades so the year-1 reasoning doesn't stand.
decades are 00-09.

Well time has become a man-made construct and not necessarily within our reality. I mean, Einstein concluded that our view of time is an illusion, but his work has been too abstract to influence the way people in modern cultures usually define time. Not only do we think of time as passing, but we've become increasingly obsessed with this idea.

Our obsession is reflected in our clocks, which have become increasingly precise, with modern clocks there is absolutely no room for human error, since it's set by wireless signals that synchronizes them.

Okay anyways, I could talk about this crap forever.

Nice to be back for a little bit, but I'm not promising I'll be back soon. Maybe tonight....tomorrow...or a month from now.

the concept of decades is not very old. it usually refers to a span of 10 years that are marked by the second to last digit, not by tracing back sets of 10 years to the beginning of our era. 00-09 it is.

The Tears - Here Come The Tears

Really now? As happy as I am of somebody here even mentioning anything Brett/Bernard related, I found that album to the single biggest disappointment of the decade along with Zeitgeist. The previous two BA & BB collaborations, especially DMS, were bloody fantastic. Nice guitars, but utterly forgettable. All surface, no feeling.

And with the whole sounding similar argument: Kid A, Amnesiac, and Hail To The Thief all sound very similar. In Rainbows departs from that mold and comes off as a much more mature sounding album. I also agree with the point that Kid A features numerous weak points where as In Rainbows has only one(House of Cards). In Rainbows is easily Radioheads most complete album since OK Computer, and without surprise is their 2nd best album. I might also possibly put it above OK Computer.

the concept of decades is not very old. it usually refers to a span of 10 years that are marked by the second to last digit, not by tracing back sets of 10 years to the beginning of our era. 00-09 it is.

05 - 14 <- Here's a decade.

But when you're talking about 90's or 80's or 00's you're talking about a piece of our whole history so you should know that if you are now in our 200th decade that means there were another 19 decades before. If our calendar started in 1 A.D. (and it did) so our 1st decade is from 01 A.D. to 10 A.D. ... then our 200th decade (or 2000's) started in 01, 01, 2001 as the century, as the millenium.

You know, 1 millenium is made of 10 centuries; 1 century is made of 10 decades; 1 decade is made of 10 years .. so if your decade started in 01, 01, 2000, that should be also the beginning of the 21th century and 3rd millenium.

the end.

all this philosophy is a waste of time - the fact is that it is generally accepted that an album released in 1970 was from the 70s as was an album released in 79. Therefore we should be discussing albums released from 2000-2009. jesus christ

Reading back through this thread I was apalled by many things. Mostly by the people who complain about the lack of quality in this decade when there is so much great shit out there right now. Fuck I have seven honorable mentions with about ten or twenty more milling around up in my brain.

I will also say In Rainbows is a very different album from previous Radiohead, in that it has a very minimalist, almost reggae influenced feel to it. The "vibe" so to speak is totally new for them. And "House of Cards" is my favorite for that very reason, the relaxed, chilled out vibe.

Crazy. I like the tongue-in-cheek nature of Machina(s). It sounds like Cheap Trick meets Slayer. I think Machina II (Q101 rip) in particular sounds amazing through headphones. I like how buried the mix is. I think the sentiment is best expressed on the Jay Leno performance of Cash Car Star. It's kind of goofy and kind of heavy. It's got that midwestern "we've gone too far" vibe, which I like.

And for some reason I feel it necessary to justify that I'm a MCIS-baby. So it's not like Machina was "my" album or anything. I dunno. How 'bout that c_wilson amirite?

officially i posted those tracklists in april 2003.

in march 2002 i posted this in a best of 2001 thread:

"unfortunately i haven't heard a lot of the albums you guys are listing (at least, in toto). i'll probably get to downloading a lot of them.

out of what i have:

1. Dismemberment Plan - Change
2. The White Stripes - White Blood Cells
3. Modest Mouse - Everywhere and his Nasty Parlour Tricks
4. Terrene - Sidereal
5. The Shins - Oh, Inverted World"

i spent a lot of time listening to music in that next year.

wait, what??

I said IT SOUNDS LIKE CHEAP TRICK MEETS SLAYER. I'm talking about conceptual sound. I could have just as easily said it sounds like Mountain meets Pantera. But that would be too easy.

edit: I forgot about the Liars "Threw us in a trench..." album. Shit ruled.

slunken has clearly never heard Cheap Trick or Slayer.

And, judging by his love of Machina II, he has never heard any band not called The Smashing Pumpkins.

judging by his posts slunken has quite probably heard about ten times as many albums as you have

I had to uncheck him off my ignore list just to read that. Yep, still an idiot. Back on the list.

Agreed. Wanna know my Bluegrass-to-Metal ontology?

Hint: They're the same thing.

Heh. Just sayin'. But I guess this thread isn't the appropriate place for that in-depth analysis (read: my dodgy speculations and truth-stretching).

I could never find one of their albums that really REALLY hooked me. I did enjoy that Head of Wantastiquet album that Paul put out tho. What the hell, I'll give it a shot.

I'm trying to impose the "only as good as their last album" rule with bands that I'm not that into. I remember hearing Headdress and liking it okay, but it really didn't grip me. I was telling someone on another board that I'm really not into digital collecting anymore. If i like something I've got to really like it enough to buy it. If not, fuck it. Thank god I didn't just now find out about TSP lol rite?

i'm not into collecting at all and i don't have any money

i just like sounds is all

i just like sounds is all

I have to severely limit myself otherwise I get overwhelmed. I go through phases a lot. Right now I'm on a Blues-oriented kick, so that Sunburned album is sounding good. Plus I've got a gnarly sunburn.

some of my favorite albums of the decade would probably *******

queens of the stone age - songs for the deaf
radiohead - amnesiac
broken social scene - you forgot it in people
sparklehorse - it's a wonderful life
the fiery furnaces - gallowsbird's bark
department of eagles - in ear park

circulatory system - circulatory system
the decemberists - picaresque

building nothing out of something is also one of my favs but its a compilation and theres some disagreement about when it was released
