Animated comedy show Futurama is set to return to TV screens six years after it was cancelled.

The show, created by The Simpsons mastermind Matt Groening, was axed in 2003 following a sharp decline in ratings.

Programme bosses refused to give up on the series, creating four straight-to-dvd films which were aired on America's Comedy Central network.

But bosses at U.S. network Fox have now ordered a revival of Futurama, commissioning 26 new episodes which are due to be screened in 2010.

I'm not sure if they think this will be another Family Guy revival, but who knows.

Six years after getting axed by Fox, Futurama is being resurrected on Comedy Central.
A spokesperson for 20th Century Fox Television confirms that the cable net has ordered 26 new episodes of Matt Groening and David X. Cohen's late, great animated series to air beginning in 2010. The studio cites Futurama's "blockbuster" performance on DVD and in reruns on Comedy Central as the reason for its rebirth.
Hmmm... sound familiar?
"When we brought back Family Guy several years ago, everyone said that it was a once in a lifetime thing -- that canceled series stay canceled and cannot be revived," 20th Century Fox TV Chairmen Gary Newman and Dana Walden said in a joint statement. "But Futurama was another series that fans simply demanded we bring back, and we couldn’t have been happier when Matt and David agreed that there were many more stories yet to tell."
Adds Groening: "We’re thrilled Futurama is coming back. We now have only 25,766 episodes to make before we catch up with Bender and Fry in the year 3000."

I wouldn't have minded the show ending really, it'd be pretty hard to top the previous seasons and I can imagine it'll go downhill like the simpsons. But I'm still pretty enthused I guess, and as far as plot goes the series has always done a good job staying fresh and will probably continue to do so.

it's not going to be on FOX. they essentially told groening to go fuck himself and gave the entire network to seth mcfarlane's 3 shows.

i don't think comedy central can produce a show like futurama. don't shows like futurama with their stellar animation and actual orchestras on staff to play the music for the show cost something like 500,000 dollars an episode to produce?

they're not producing it - 20th century fox studios is still making them. CC just ordered the episodes for air.

besides the ad revenue, they'll make a ton of money on syndication rights and DVD sales. the studio needed this - you can't really syndicate a show successfully unless you've got 5 years of episodes to rotate.

Is FOX Planning to Recast FUTURAMA? (http://www.forcesofgeek.com/2009/07/is-fox-planning-to-recast-futurama.html)

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LcYCjYs-R-c/SmCb80-5jvI/AAAAAAAAC7A/5pDZRBzG-xE/s400/fu-futurama-cast-512x288.jpg (http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_LcYCjYs-R-c/SmCb80-5jvI/AAAAAAAAC7A/5pDZRBzG-xE/s1600-h/fu-futurama-cast-512x288.jpg)As excited as I was about the return of Futurama, FOX has once again ruined that experience by their callous actions. According to no less than cast members John DiMaggio, Phil LaMarr, and Maurice LaMarche on their Facebook pages, a casting notice has gone out to replace actors DiMaggio, LaMarche, Billy West and Katy Sagal.

http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LcYCjYs-R-c/SmCb8qMJNlI/AAAAAAAAC64/O5hyrwd7hr0/s400/2708495493_df84f994d4.jpg (http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_LcYCjYs-R-c/SmCb8qMJNlI/AAAAAAAAC64/O5hyrwd7hr0/s1600-h/2708495493_df84f994d4.jpg)Sagal, West, DiMaggio and LaMarche on a San Diego Comicon panel

Personally, I'm betting that FOX doesn't want to pay for these talented folk and would much rather cast "sound-alikes" at a much lower rate. A similar incident happened on Matt Groening's other series, The Simpsons, which resulted in a hefty raise for the voice actors.

Nevertheless, any attempt to recast these talented folks should be the first indicator that the new season is poorly executed and just a cheap attempt to push out product.

Read the full call sheet after the jump and if you want, send Casting Director an email telling him how much you enjoy the recasting idea by clicking HERE (FUTURAMA@SCOTTMULLERCASTING.COM).

TheStar.com | entertainment | Futurama cast members ink new deal with Fox (http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/674841)

LOS ANGELES–The Star has learned exclusively that the entire voice cast of Futurama has just signed a new contract with Fox after weeks of intense salary negotiations.

As late as last week, the network was threatening to replace the original voices of Matt Groening's cult-hit cartoon, to the point of actually announcing a casting call for voice actors to replace them.

The Futurama voice cast includes John DiMaggio, Maurice LaMarche, Billy West, Tress MacNeille and Katey Sagal.

Yeah, I heard about that. I was halfway convinced that the whole thing was a publicity stunt because the comic-con panel had been billed as "watch as a Fox executive decides the fate of Futurama LIVE ON STAGE", so I thought the "recasting voice actors" was just a ploy for that to play out. But it wasn't so the whole thing from reports just sounded really awkward.
