Now, it's been totally proven the guy did not die from Swine Flu but I say we totally fucking run with it and spread across the Internets so proclaim that Obama is dying from Swine Flu RIGHT FUCKING NOW!! I agree with you to the extent that it's not exactly about Eli being a vampire. It's about the kids' friendship and their similarities. I mean, obviously the vampirism is pretty integral to the plot, but the movie approaches the whole concept from such an unusual angle that it's hard call it the "best vampire movie ever." It strays too far from the conventions of usual vampire movies. It's just a good plain old movie!

On an unrelated note, it features a dozen CGI cats attacking a lady and knocking her down a flight of stairs, which is a huge plus in my book.

also this swine flu thing is fascinating as an epidemiological study of emerging disease in the wikipedia age, and if it's not actually all that dangerous it's a good test run of the procedures we have put in place for an h5n1 jump.

hmm but an interesting thing to keep in mind is that 1918 flu also emerged in the late flu season, first wave beginning in march if you believe the fort riley story, as this one has. it then laid low until the late summer and a much more severe version appeared, and after that point were the majority of deaths from the pandemic.

"In the 1918–1919 pandemic, a first or spring wave began in March 1918 and spread unevenly through the United States, Europe, and possibly Asia over the next 6 months. Illness rates were high, but death rates in most locales were not appreciably above normal. A second or fall wave spread globally from September to November 1918 and was highly fatal. In many nations, a third wave occurred in early 1919 (21). Clinical similarities led contemporary observers to conclude initially that they were observing the same disease in the successive waves."

no one should see let the right one in until stupid fucking magnolia fixes the subtitle file.

Netflix streaming version, I believe, uses the theatrical subtitles. But so much of this movie is conveyed through nonverbal communication that you really are not missing that much to watch the retarded version.

...Though yeah, I will probably double-dip when the corrected version hits the shelves.

There have been two confirmed reportings in my county, let alone the amount that have not yet been confirmed. A bunch of different colleges and schools around Ohio have closed classes for the next few weeks. One friend of minw who lives about 30 miles away has it...=(

It's so horrible though, my local newspaper had to make everyone worried by putting their headline yesterday as, "ALL OF HUMANITY THREATENED!"

Also, my boyfriend works for a distribution corporation contracted under Colgate.....they constantly receive shipments in from Mexico. eh.

I was issued some safety glasses and an N-95 disposable particulate respirator.... hooray I'm safe from swine flu! In addition any 911 call in which someone reports a cough/fever is being dispatched as "flu like symptoms" with the pager stating "POSSIBLE PANDEMIC RELATED." People in the hospitals are freaking out and every asshole that sneezes is calling 911. I've told at least 20 people in the last two days that there is a 99.99% chance they are fine but if they have their heart set on having the swine flu the best place to catch it is in a busy waiting room at municipal hospital.

I honestly half wish I'd catch the shit... with antivirals I'd probably only feel shitty for a couple of days and would get at least a couple of weeks paid leave to sit around my house and watch playoff hockey.

i'm going to Mexico in three weeks so I'm glad this has blown over for now.

but UT has a "do not come in for 48 hours after returning from Mexico" policy in effect so if they keep that up it's going to annoy my PI that not only will I be gone for 5 days I'm going to not be able to come in for another 2.

ive begun coughing up phlegm and my throat is extremely sore. i have to go take a math test up at school today and usually it'd be no big deal to go out in this condition (my body feels just fine) but im afraid of getting dirty looks and maybe even being asked to leave a certain location. srsly.

You should buy a cheap white t-shirt and write "IT'S NOT FUCKING PIG FLU" on it sharpie, so that everytime you cough and someone gives you a nasty look, just point at your shirt and look angry.
