I'm sure that might have helped his chances, but my understanding is that he still won the job with his audition. As I recall, the story goes that he dropped a stick in the middle of it and still finished without missing a beat, and that impressed everybody enough to offer him the job.

On another note - Billy has no friends and can't find a drummer on his own.
