View Full Version : Help me crack a safe in 24 hrs.

Okay, so my best friend has this safe. He's had it for years and every time I see him, I joke around with him asking to see the human body parts inside. You see, he knows I'm a naturally curious person and that it kills me to know that I have no clue what he keeps inside of this safe. All I know is, it's not cash but it does have value. I've always wanted to know what he keeps inside of this thing and this morning, he emailed me a picture and an interesting proposition: If I can decode his stupid little message within 24 hours, I can take a peak and see what is inside of this thing. As a bonus, he said I can keep 1 of whatever-the-fuck it is. Really, I just want to... no need to know

Below is a copy of the picture he sent me. I already tried the obvious, like cutting the numbers in half and rotating them around and stuff like that. My friend is very smart however and cracking his little code is most likely going to prove to be a real pain in my ass, but I just have to know what is inside of this thing. Obviously, taking a sledgehammer or dynamite to this thing isn't an option. However, if I can cheat and figure out another way to open this thing without the code, I'm all for that. If you know anything about safes, it's a Sentry MS0100. I already checked out the website and requesting a combination is out of the question as I would have to mail them $15 and have a notarized letter stating that I'm the owner of the safe. If you want to help and have any questions, just ask. If I ever figure this thing out, I'll let you know what I find inside and take pics if I think it's worth taking pics of.

I have about 19 hours left so, here's the pic:

http://home.comcast.net/%7Eseign/randompics/questionmark.jpg

edit: And like I said, my friend is very smart. Every little detail in this pic is probably important. And no, I can't tell if that last digit is a 1, a 2 or an underlined 7.

edit again: I also don't know if the second number is a negative or if that is just a dash. Also, to open the safe, you have to start on zero and do 3 360 degree turns to the left before putting the first number in. The correct direction to spin the dial (which is typical and goes to 99) is Left, Right, Left (for the second number, you have to pass it 1 time first) which is opposite from typical dials. He wrote RLR to throw me off but like I said, I had the foresight to check out the manual online before I tried to put in a combination.

turn to the right to 166
turn to the left to 40
turn to back to the right 82
open the safe
send me half of whatever is inside

I would lol if this turned out to be it.

One more thing, I'm 85% sure that the last number is 20.

I wish. Like I said though, the dial only goes to 99. I've already tried every variation of 83, 20, 41. Also keep in mind, for the 166, it could just be 16 or 66 and he's trying to fuck with me. He guaranteed me that this is indeed solvable or I wouldn't be wasting my time.

edit: the last number could also just be an 8 as well. Oh and, I also tried ever possible variation of simply putting the numbers in backwards.

I... can't tell if this is an elaborate joke post or what. Unless your friend has a model of that safe with a keypad instead of a dial, what exactly is the mystery here?

Edit: of course I miss the explanatory post. Maybe try right 6 left 0 right 8, since the arrows are pointing to those digits.

turn to the right 36 turn back to the left passing zero once and then stopping on zero the second time turn to the right to 16. Enjoy looking at your buddies collection of violent tranny porn.

maybe it has to do with the single digits that the arrow is pointing directly to?

that's probably stupid, but its my only guess.

I don't have the safe in front of me so I'm taking all suggestions now before walking back over to his house in about a half hour. He's only a block away so, I'll let you all know soon if anyone gets it correct. And again, it's left, right, left, making a complete 360 degree turn before putting in the second number. Kind of like a typical high school locker combination but in reverse.

Three things really bother me: The dash, the last unreadable number, and the fucked up arrows.

I actually had a lot of faith in this one, as it sounded like you knew what you were talking about :(

Thanks to all for the serious responses so far. I'm going to let some more guesses aggregate for a while and I'll give an update again in a few hours.

I have never tried cracking a safe but if you listen close enough is it possible to tell when you hit the right digit? you know like in the movies when they do it

I could probably do it in under an hour but destroying my friend's safe isn't an option. Interestingly enough, the Sentry website provides manuals that give exact locations of where the best places to drill would be, provided you wanted to do that. Also, this safe is rated as a 1 hour safe. That means it's guaranteed to hold up to attacks for only an hour.

Believe me, I tried. However, the dial purposely clicks on every number, disguising any kind of tells you could get from putting your ear up to it. Back when I was in high school, I actually had a talent for being able to get into lockers by putting my ear up to the dial. It was my stupid-human-trick that I used to impress friends. I guess this is karma kicking my ass now

maybe those numbers are in degrees, i.e. 166 degrees is the location of the first number, -40 (320) degrees is the second number, and 82 or whatever is the last one. i bet he threw some shit in that picture to confuse you (arrows)

there are a lot of other tricky things to think about with this though

this. also, don't forget about the possibility of him using radians

Note that the arrows are pointing to the '6', '0' and '2' respectively and that might come into play here.

-40 is the same in Fahrenheit and Celsius; it's the only temperature at which those two scales overlap.

That final character may not be a digit; it may be the letter "Pe":

Pe (letter) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pe_(letter))

Numerically it corresponds to 80.

I am probably leading you down a horrifically wrong road.

mxzombie, you are the fucking man! After a few misses, I started out at 0 and went 40 clicks left (40), 166 clicks right (74), and finally, 82 clicks left (56). POP!

As for what was inside: a box of really old baseball cards (they're smaller than typical baseball cards), a set of keys, house title, car title, some other important-looking papers, Amazing Spider-man #s 6 - 20, and the best part: four tickets for Metallica in January with a note that reads "James, Hope this helps you sleep better at night. "Take 1" of the tickets. You know you still like them."

We used to both be big Metallica fans back in the day. Me, not so much anymore but hey! I'm definitely into seeing them in January. Anyway, it was a fun little riddle to solve today and gave me something to do. I took pictures and will post them in a bit.

Thanks again mxzombie and everyone else that tossed in their two cents! The whole "thinking the numbers as degrees" thing never crossed my mind. And yes, I will now sleep better at night knowing my friend isn't keeping jars of body parts in his safe.

so you were supposed to ignore the R, L and R, and look at the arrows, in combination with the - ?
and start with the middle number, then take the first one on the left, and then the last one?

or am i missing something obvious here?

yeah, but if he randomly changes the order of the numbers, there isn't much to figure out, is there? he could as well have written "1 2 3" on a piece of paper and let you figure that out.

i mean, ignoring the RLR and giving a meaning to the arrows and the minus, i can follow that. but that still doesn't solve the puzzle for me.
