I heard it wasn't so great, but my roomie just rented it. I guess I'll have my chance to judge for myself soon.

Was pretty good, though I don't think the film warranted much detailed examination. Because of the mysterious context it was more survival/end of the world synopsis to me, though it was pretty cool to leave you hanging on scraps of information.

I really love this movie, it took the Giant Monster cliche and gave it a bit of a fresh spin, basically it's all the same events, but we're down with the running mobs instead of with the feds going "we're gonna nuke it down!" "but sir! there are people down there"...

The video camera gimmick gets old quickly though.

I've heard a good number of people complaining about having headaches with this movie indeed...

that's the bad side about the camera P.O.V. style

there's evidence to support both but i think it came FROM SPACE. THE LAST SHOT OF THE MOVIE SHOWS A SATTELITE FALLING OUT OF THE SKY

Cloverfield started off good, then once you saw the monster it became ridiculous and I couldn't wait for it to end.

well, yeah, it came from the SKY AND I KINDA HOPE THEY DON'T HAVE A SEQUEL BUT PART OF ME YEARNS TO KNOW MORE.

If you followed the ARG you would learn a baffling and convoluted explanation wherein the satellite falling from the sky is I think simply one part of a stream of unrelated events that leads to a sea monster growing enraged and attacking NYC

Whereas if you see it at the end of the movie you think oh hey, that must be the monster falling from space, what a cool little subtle explanation

I did like the twist on the giant monster movie trope but yeah the characters were ridiculous, and by the end apparently near-invulnerable to harm, and I sure as hell didn't need to see the monster that up-close

Best part for me is the score that plays over the end credits, "Roar!"—an awesome tribute in its own right to monster movies

we should start a netphoria film club...
with people recomending stuff for the others to watch, and then discussing the films.

Ok. Finally watched it. Movie was kinda short. I made popcorn 60 minutes into the movie and it was over a few minutes later.
The final 30 minutes made me more curious to see how the military was gonna deal with the beast. Yup, 45 minutes into the movie, I no longer cared about the characters and the story of them running for their lives. So, I think they failed there.

The beginning was almost too long. And I'd rather watch the people flee from flying debris than directly encounter the creatures.

Whatever. I'd watch it again with a friend who had not seen it before. Otherwise, I'll probably never see this movie again.

im rather surprised that this movie is getting a relatively positive response here, as i share at least a somewhat overlapping taste with a great number of people here and i thought that movie was a rotting pile of steaming cow output.
