I'm not expecting this to be any different from any other versions of BWBW but for completeness sake, could someone up it for me?

it sounds different though, if i remember it correctly. (compared to that fm bootleg, or that "live in chicago 23.1.95" promo, for example.)

The Launch CD is sourced from the band's source. Maybe this is the sound console, or a split from the stage. Either way, the Launch source sounds rather different and much cleaner. I do prefer the FM, however, because it sounds more alive. I'd have to look at the Launch CD-ROM, but I remember it being video files with embedded audio information. That means compression.

the launch cd-rom has an audio cd track and a data track. bullet isn't compressed on the audio track.

i would assume that the source for the launch cd-rom bullet is identical to the source of the "live in chicago 23.10.95" french promo, i.e. non-fm, but my memory tells me even these two don't sound identical.

Here's the Launch flac (http://www.mediafire.com/file/im2rmngdmmz/Smashing Pumpkins - Bullet with Butterfly Wings[Launch].flac).

I think all sources come from the FM broadcast. Check out the red line at 16k (lies higher on the Starlight bootleg). This indicates FM, right? I thought I read that somewhere.

What do you think?

I don't know, the graph of starlight looks like FM compression

maybe the others are preFM?

don't know anything about the red line TBH. could just be some crap in the signal somewhere, like a small buzz or hiss, or feedback etc.

starlight is FM. pre-fm wouldn't have the band at 16hz like the promo and launch versions do, though. It could be something weird in the house mix...maybe post these to trader's den?

ps Bram, feel like doing a .txt file for the FLAC?

my thought is that they're all fm, but that the starlight bootleg has been treated to make it sound louder.

ben, can you post these at the traders' den? i'll make a .txt file.

it could be interesting to have a look at that fm>dat recording (not starlight). can someone upload bullet with butterfly wings from that recording? (i think it's disc 2, track 2.)

looks similar to the starlight bootleg.
would it be a correct to conclude that "live in chicago 23.10.95" and launch are sourced from pre-fm?

one thing i noticed though is that the starlight bootleg sounds different. worse. i think it's running a bit too slow.

most likely. definitely not fm sourced, but could be from a separate multi track recording. I doubt they would bother though. possibly they just tweaked the multi tracks for this one track since it was going to be used for launch.

So far ever spectral posted is clearly FM sourced. The nice little red line going through all of them is the signature of a FM source.

no FM source has spectral activity all the way up to 22khz like the launch CD does, though.
