Fox Not Renewing King of the Hill
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
October 31, 2008

After several previous brushes with cancellation, Fox has opted not to renew veteran animated comedy "King of the Hill" beyond its current 13th season.

In April, Fox picked up 13 more episodes from the 20th Century Fox TV-produced show, which are wrapping production.

A lot has changed since "King of the Hill" premiered in 1997. Its creators Greg Daniels and Mike Judge have moved on to other projects -- Daniels developed and is running NBC's "The Office," and Judge has a new animated series, "The Goode Family," launching on ABC in midseason.

Judge had continued to voice the central character on the series, alongside voiceover cast members Kathy Najimy, Pamela Adlon, Brittany Murphy, Tom Petty, Johnny Hardwick and Stephen Root.

"Hill" has been executive produced by Judge, Daniels, John Altschuler, Dave Krinsky, Michael Rotenberg, Howard Klein, Jim Dauterive and Garland Testa.

this sucks about king of the hill ending but it was getting to be too much of a soap opera and once SPOILER ALERT cotton died there wasn't much else worth the effort to watch for.

KOTH is a reasonably good show, better than the simpsons or family guy now, at least. The reason people watch the show is partly because there's actual character development, even though it's not gut-bustingly funny all the time. If you assume it's a comedy and everything has to be geared towards a comedic premise, of course you're not going to like it.

I don't agree with you a lot, but you hit the nail on the head here. Family Guy is sub-sophomoric garbage and The Simpsons, while certainly one of the greatest shows of all time, is a shell of what it used to be and has really been little more than a parody of itself for the past several years.

King of the Hill isn't supposed to be a laugh-a-minute comedy, and it's better because of it. I also appreciate the fact that it doesn't often have to resort to retarded humor for the sake of using retarded humor, an 'art' that Family Guy has perfected over the course of its run. Anybody who thinks Family Guy is better than King of the Hill has terrible taste in comedy and needs to either grow up, get off the ganja, or both. I mean, shit, at least other gross-out cartoon shows like South Park or even Drawn Together (which pushed the envelope as far as a televisable cartoon could possibly push it) are clever at times.

It's cuz stoners and drunk college kids made Family Guy a hit and consequently FOX pretty much sold their soul to Seth MacFarlane, kinda like they did to Chris Carter after The X-Files became a hit. Millennium would not have lasted as long as it did had The X-Files not been at the height of its popularity when it was on because Carter pretty much has the network by the balls at that point, and Harsh Realm and The Lone Gunmen were both garbage shows that ended quickly once FOX finally realized that Chris Carter was a one-trick pony. I laugh maybe once every couple Family Guys and even less at American Dad...god only knows what MacFarlane has planned for that Cleveland spinoff.

There's an outside chance that Fox's canceled veteran animated series "King of the Hill" could reign again.

Sources say ABC, which is rolling out midseason animated comedy “The Goode Family” -- from “King” co-creator Mike Judge -- is eyeing the veteran Fox toon.

A spokesman for producer 20th Century Fox TV would only confirm "another network is interested" in the show. ABC had no comment and, to be clear, this is still the discussion phase.

At a time when shows are being renewed while earning modest 2.4 adult demo ratings, the current 13th season of “King” is averaging a 3.4 -- nearly as much as CBS’ breakout freshman drama “The Mentalist.” Sunday's edition, boosted by "The Simpsons" annual Halloween episode, hit a season high.

While a possible pairing of “King” and “Goode” would make a lot of sense for ABC as animated shows perform best when partnered with other animated shows, creating a Judge block could be logistically difficult.

“King” takes nine months to produce new episodes due to the animation work involved. So while “Goode” is slated for midseason, “King” wouldn't be ready until next fall. If ABC orders “King” and “Goode” flops … the network is left with an expensive half-hour animated show next fall with no partner. Plus, ABC wouldn't want its "King" to air at the same time as Fox's "King."

One source hinted the network might just opt for a script order -- which would getting the ball rolling on another "King" season, while leaving the network time to test "Goode" on the air.

Another option for "Hill" is to move to cable. But between cost of the show's animation and voice talent, “King” is considered pricey and likely too rich for a small network, such as Adult Swim.

If ABC were to pick up the show, it would mark the second series to change broadcast networks in the past year -- the first being "Scrubs" move from NBC to ABC. ABC also expressed interest in CBS' "The New Adventures of Old Christine" when the show was on the bubble last year. All three titles are half-hour shows, a format the network has had some difficulty programming.
