But mostly good match, thankfully.

it went well surprisingly well though, considering how scared some people get. i was quite surprised. they did think i was a bit weird at first i think, with the ear things and all that. but i get hugs and beers and i dig them as much as they dig me i think.

She’s pretty religious, so with my tattoos and such she was initially cautious.
I don’t see her much anymore, but I felt I earned her respect when Angie was moving, and I did pretty much everything for her on my own. Including 2 single beds (and their bases) and a fridge and other fun and awkwardly sized or weighted objects, up two flights of stairs.
I kept having to drive to her old house and load shit up on the trailer and take it through. It took two days.

hey barden, I have few questions:
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/D6VKJ-niA4s&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/D6VKJ-niA4s&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
how big is this thing? You wouldn't recommend using public transportation for getting from the airport or getting around Johannesburg?

<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/BmzIc6ANjWI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/BmzIc6ANjWI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
how common is this, really? Is this wanna-be-controversial news or is really everyday thing on the streets?

barden

Damn, reached my cap, so my internet is fucking slow, but will try have a look at the videos and answer for you.
I recognize the dude on ETV news in the first video so far though! Will get back to you.

And nah, I’m not religious. I’m anti (most) religion, but pro spirituality.

the first clip is about gangs waiting for people who arrive to Johannesburg's airport and mugging them on the way from the airport.
Do you use public transportation in Cape Town, Durban, or Johannesburg? Or do you only drive around in cars?

The second clip is about muggings on streets. I mean is it really bad, everyday thing?

I have probably spent a few weeks with her altogether over the past ~2 years

Okay, when you planning to get to JHB?
Cause they’re building the gautrain at the moment, which will be our first underground train thingee, and there is millions and millions of monies being invested. It’s supposed to be quite fancy. It’ll run from the airport, to Johannesburg, and on to Pretoria if you need. Since it’s brand new and fancy, it should be rather nifty. It’ being built for the 2010 world cup.
Public transport: You get ‘private’ taxi services which are pricey but safe.
Normal taxi’s I don’t recommend unless you’re local. Confusing, and take you to potentially target spots for a foreign tourist. Not to sound racist, just stating the facts, but most ‘white’ people don’t use them. I have, and friends have now and then, but we’re in the minority and if you tell people you get a bit of a reaction. Busses are a bit better, but still not ideal for you, I think.
I’d strongly suggest renting a car. It’ll work out fucking cheap. Around R150 a day I think I’ve seen it advertised, which is like, $20. Just check where you’re heading and don’t get lost or get too keen to explore dodgy looking areas or you might get hijacked, depending on the make of car.
For example: BMW / VW Golfs are almost sure targets.
But frankly, I don’t think you’ll be a target for hijacking, they usually plan it out quite well, take note of routines and such, and nail you when entering or leaving your house in the suburbs. It’s not one of those peak traffic in front of everyone operations.

Just be aware! That’s all I can recommend. Don’t come across as a soft target and you’ll be fine. They’re looking for easy money. There is fear of consequence that’ll keep people in check. But if you’re in the wrong place and look like you’ll be worth the risk, people might take a chance. Don’t be over paranoid either, cause it’ll also make you a target, make you look valuble.

Otherwise, just don’t carry around your passport or anything of great value (including fancy looking bling or really nice shoes) if you’re planning on wandering around town. That way if you do get mugged or something, you don’t lose much and get a cool story to post on netphoria.

They wont follow you to a hotel. They will probably only follow folks who they can monitor, have left their cars at the airport and they know live here. But they’ll never follow you to hotel or anything like that. And you need to have a car to make it worth their while as well. Car rentals usually have tracker and such installed, although that’s not a huge problem for them, it is an extra complication they’d rather avoid.

Will try watch the second video now!

(PS: I’ve never personally been mugged or hijacked or even really been close. Don’t get me wrong, it happens, I have heard stories from friends and such, but they’re all usually almost expected when explained in context).

Oh, started watching the second video, remember seeing it on TV on carte blanche before.
Um um um, that kind of thing isn’t too common, no.
But it can happen.
But I don’t think you’ll be in that kind of area, to be honest. (also, this was in Durban, about 700km from Johannesburg. But Johannesburg has a higher crime rate. Haha).
Durban is home to the Zulu. Culturely, they have bigger balls there. They aren’t shy to smack you about a bit, they’re fucking Zulu man. I love the Zulu, they have pride.

Um um um… you’ll probably only get mugged if walking alone in a dodgy area.

If I remember properly, it also wasn’t a very violent mugging?
If you do get mugged, it’ll be to serve the point of them getting cash from you, not to act tough or be in a gang or something. So they probably wont hurt you if you cooperate. If you’re respectful and nice, they may even joke with you a bit and thank you before going on their way. But don’t be surprised if they have a gun, and don’t give them a reason to use it and they wont.

It’s really unlikely if you stay aware and such.

oops, barden, update: it's not Johannesburg, I probably screwed it up: I am going to Cape Town, University of Cape Town, mid-July 2009.

thanks for all the info. I am not scared or afraid, I just wondered if it is worse than depicted. I wouldn't walk around with passport or money, but you know, I would like to minimize the risk as much as possible, but at the same time I don't plan to spend the whole time in the hotel.

oh, if it's CT it's a whole nother story.
Some dodgy areas, but the city pretty much caters to tourists, so you're set dude.
One of the most beautiful places in the world! You'll have a great time.

My partner is my right hand, and it is attached to me, and I get along fine with my mom. She had her toe cut off recently and put back on as a day surgery. Pretty neat.
