What are some good albums to get started with?

I remember giving Blonde on Blonde a spin or two a few years ago but somehow it never grabbed me. I've liked plenty of random songs by him though.

i would agree with this, but it skips his first album. listen to that one first. but, if you want just one album, go with Bringing It all Back Home or maybe Highway 61 Revisited.

Decided to get started with this one since I found 'Live at Massey Hall' to be such a great introduction to Neil Young. Sounds wonderful so far.

don't miss disc 1 of bootleg series vol 1-3. damn good. any of the albums from the 60s, and obviously blood on the tracks though i think desire is just as good.
actually this reminds me i still don't have some dylan records...

Bob dylan is the only musical artist that comes close to toppling the great Pumpkins from the top of my list.

He's like billy in so many ways.

- Voice/style changes album to album

- Voice that most people can't stand but if your into it then it's amazing.

- one singular shift in musical tone (see newpork folk festival controversy) that caused many fans to jump ship. Similiar to Adore after MCIS.

- Fans endlessly bitching about their favorite songs/versions not making it onto the albums.

- endless catalog of non -album rarities, different versions, etc.

- divisive and unexpected switch to Jesus loving. (Bob eventually got off the crazy religion train)

- I could go on.

Anyways if you want a nice little mix of greats try these

Folk:

It's alright Ma I'm only bleeding
It's all over now baby blue
Honey just allow me one more chance
Hard Rain's gonna fall
Masters of war
Desolation Row
Times are a changin
When the ships come in

Rock:

Tombstone Blues
It takes a lot to laugh, it takes a train to cry
Buick 6
Subterranean Homesick Blues
Maggies Farm Live from Newport
(It's one of the defining performances in Rock History.. similiar to The Beatles on Ed Sullivan, Elvis shaking his hips on tv, MTV going on air, Smells like Teen Spirit video breaking big)
I Want you
Sooner of Later One of us must know
And last but not least The "JUDAS!" performance from Bootleg Series 4 1966 Like A Rolling Stone.

"I'll Keep It With Mine" (piano version from the Bringing It All Back Home sessions) is the outtake that always makes me think this. what a great fucking song.

umm. Joey??

Desire has some stellar songs but overall it hardly ranks in the Bob Dylan top 5.
