View Full Version : i'm going to murder microsoft word
redbull 09-09-2008, 06:25 PM whose bright idea was it to make it impossible to set shortcuts for special characters in word 2008? I don't have a num pad on this laptop so every single time I want a letter with umlauts, I have to go into the menu, find it, and manually insert it.
christian zombie vampires 09-09-2008, 06:29 PM if you're word processing umulats on a regular basis you need to sit down and re-evaluate your life bro
Or get a German keyboard on eBay for five bucks...
MstrGhost 09-09-2008, 06:39 PM For anyone needing advanced typographic formatting, word ain't but a fancier notepad. Word 2007 still doesn't support ligatures! It's supposed to work in 2008 though, but there's no PC version which does.
/rant off
christian zombie vampires 09-09-2008, 07:01 PM did you just make up the word ligatures
MstrGhost 09-09-2008, 07:05 PM did you just make up the word ligatures
Huh?
I'm just saying that word doesn't even recognize ligatures for spell checking, which is absurd.
Also, why are you using Microsoft Word? There are so many good alternatives. Open Office 3.0 beta RC1, for example.

Also, how many special German letters are there? Four? Ää, Öö, Üü, ß?
Just copy and paste them.

Macs have always allowed you to write special characters using the Option key, no weird number pad madness
Option-u u: ü
Option-u o: ö
And so on

That sounds pretty inconvenient if you want to try and open your file on another computer to print or continue working on it or something like that.

You can save them as word documents. And unless you pull out some crazy formatting it should be compatible.
