No he's right it's very common. In the US people go crazy around the holidays and give gifts to anyone who works for them, Mail Carriers, Garbage men, Doormen, park lot attendants....

Could also depend on where you live. NYC has whole culture based around tipping. I know people who have lists of 30 random people who just work wither in their apartment building or in the parking lot they use etc. It just amazes me doormen make a fortune to do literally nothing, people tip them. Garbage men in NYC start at 45k without overtime After your 5th year in NYC sanitation you can easily clear 100k a year, but people will tip them if they throw away a couch.
