at the end of a hallway. At the other end of the hallway is a room with door. The door is closed. Inside the room is a lamp which is manipulated by one of the three switches.

You can turn the switches on and off. You can walk down to the other end of the hallway, open the door, and go in the room, but when you return you have to close the door behind you. You can only make the trip once.

How do you determine which switch is connected to the lamp?

Is the goal to get into the room with the lamp on, or simply to determine which switch works?

Also I would just look for the ambient light from beneath the door crack. It doesn't take math to solve this.

check the lamp room first, if the light is off then at least one of the switches will be the right one.

run the lamp cord under the door and take it with you. then you can see the lamp from the end of the hall and once you saw it, take the saw and cut the wall open to look at the wiring

I turn two of the light switches on.
I wait a little bit.
I turn one of them off.
I enter the room.
If it's dark, I gently fondle the light bulb.
Et voilŠ!

why you gotta go and make things so complicated?

I was thinking of this too, but if itís warm, how do you know which of the two switches it was, if you can only make one trip?

I figure this is a good as a place as many to admit it. I have a sick habit. When nobody is around or watching, I draw up electrical schematics and make up my own little circuits with resistors and cute little bulbs and everything. Afterwards I stuff the heavily drawn-on piece of paper down my throat and get rid of the evidence. I am so ashamed ;_;

just kidding. i've always wanted a robot friend. we can ride around on bicycles and make jokes about people and if anybody wants to fight you can zap them with your lazer eyes

Most of all it's just the simplest series circuit with a switch ever

This puzzle sucks, we were never told that we could be sure when a switch was on or off. I mean my house has a bunch of light switches that turn on when you flip them in the wrong direction.
