IIRC, the western parts of Cuba are sparsely populated. When they were saying this was only going to hit as a Cat 3 storm, my brother and I both said it'll be much worse but the NWS didn't want to scare the hell out of people yet.

I think it's time to scare the hell of people.

silver lining here is that its predicted to make landfall right as the republican convention begins. not only will it eat into their news coverage, a reminder or new orleans and hurricanes cant do anything but harm to them.

if the first hurricane landed because of a gay pride parade scheduled for that day, i wonder what god has in mind this time. looks like hes straightened up and is flying right now

I'll be interested to see if the republicans try to use this hurricane in there favor by saying look, errors were made in the past but look how well we evacuated the city and protected the citizens this time.

I think they will use the hurricane as a highlight of the current administration and I think it will be disgusting.

it wont work. all anyone thinks when they think of "new orleans" and "hurricane" is "heckuva job" and republican failure generally. the better they are in responding this time the more strongly their failure last time is drawn into relief and emphasized.

I think we can give the ladies a little more credit than that. It's like saying every man in America is going to vote for Obama now because his ticket has only dudes on it. In addition I remember a Hillary supporter I know telling me about how she hoped Hillary didn't get the VP nomination because it would imply that Hillary would have the support role rather than the leadership role.

It makes perfect sense to me. Most people on this board are in their early to mid 20s I think, most have gone to college, most seem to come from semi-affluent suburban or urban backgrounds...

I thought Canada has a fuckton of guns.

Also, *************'s analysis of the liberal arrogance on this board is somewhat reminiscent of that joke (factual anecdote?) about a president who was alarmed to learn that half of Americans are of below-average intelligence. As was pointed out previously, it's not unreasonable to assume that most of the people here, who evidently can afford a computer and internet access, come from middle class homes and probably had access to at least halfway decent education. I'm not saying we're all like fancypants Mr. Eulogy who has attended private school all his life and can afford $40k/year tuition in addition to living expenses, which ******* new khakis every two weeks and gallons of astroglide and hair product, but even though redbreegull's father can't afford to drive his ass around town with fuel at $4/gallon, his family still isn't poor, and he can still probably read above a tenth grade level, despite how lame his posts are.

Anyway, it sounds to me like NOLA's had some bad luck. They said that Katrina was one of those things that only happens every few generations, and although Gustav is "only" a category 2, supposedly the winds aren't more than a few miles per hour slower than the ones from Katrina. On top of rolling snake eyes twice in three years, the heroic response of McCain and the Republicans' altruism through the new RNC plans are going to help elect a man with whom NOLA probably isn't down.
