And I'm not talking about drugs - I got the new MacBook 13" for €300 (about $440).

A friend of mine got it from his father, but he had just bought himself a MacBook Pro a few weeks ago. So I got his MacBook (even in the original wrapping), a "mighty mouse", a case and tons of CDs with burned software.

I'm the happiest guy in this town right now.

Also, Netphoria looks good on a Mac.

I used an ancient laptop with a broken display and keyboard, hooked to an even more ancient screen.

God, I love this thing.

Can anyone of you Mac people tell me some good newbie community or something like that? How do I uninstall software? :(

hnibos
08-28-2008, 01:22 PM
throw it in the trash

Mo
08-28-2008, 01:28 PM
What, straight from "Applications"? The Windows no-go? :erm:

hnibos
08-28-2008, 01:37 PM
some applications, when you install them, will have an uninstall program in the folder. If that is not the case, just throw it in the trash.

Mo
08-28-2008, 01:39 PM
Awesome - no registry and shit like that?

I'm absolutely new to Mac, I only know Windows and various Linux distros - the last time I had to work with a MacIntosh was when I was eight years old.

So, you got a Mac?
What programs should I get? Open-source, if possible?

hnibos
08-28-2008, 01:40 PM
yea I have a mac but I dont use it for much. I use Itunes so that should tell you something. Other than don't use AIM, use Adium, I got nothing for you.

Transmission is a good torrent client.

Mo

BTW, I bought this
<img src="http://www.abload.de/img/coolerthingyaxk.jpg">
as well. A USB-powered cooler (which I don't really need), integrated in some kind of air buffer thingy. I'm lying in bed right now, couldn't do that with my old laptop.

hnibos
08-28-2008, 01:46 PM
thats a pretty fancy gadget.

hnibos
08-28-2008, 01:47 PM
will it also clean the cigarette smell out of the air?

Mo
08-28-2008, 01:59 PM
Ha, probably not. But it was only €10.

And for only thirty bucks I could order a USB-powered cigarette-smell-remover.

www.macaddict.com used to have pretty good forums to answer new user questions. Haven't been there in a while, but you could try it.

also, www.versiontracker.com is the best site for finding freeware/shareware if you're on the hunt. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that would need right away. Macs come pretty well stocked with all the basic-use computer apps you would need out of the box. What are you planning on doing with it?

Get Appzapper, or equivalent of. There are app folders you don't know about that are/were necessary, in the library/application support, etc.
Appzapper is known to miss a spot here and there, however, so shop around(or do a spotlight search of said app title afterwards)

If you want to watch Divx Movies or something, download vlc-player. Pretty much plays anything you throw at it.

Mo
08-29-2008, 01:58 PM
Yeah, I've been a VLC user for many years, thanks ;)

I also got MPlayer, some tagging stuff etc. It's almost freakishly fast, I love it.

damn, mo. I'm so jealous! my iBook needs to be updated so bad. I basically can't watch gifs because they play extremely slow. That'll give you an idea of how bad it is.

Mo
08-29-2008, 02:50 PM
Why don't you just back up your data and reset the whole thing? My roommate's iBook is ancient and still works perfectly alright. :)

Mo

Wow thanks for posting that. I`m looking for something like that for quite some time but I only found a small stand that doesn`t hold the macbook upright if the battery is taken out.

btw spaces is a quite nice application (already on leopard) and UnrarX a good tool to extract rar- or zip-files.
You can find some nice widgets for the dashboard here: http://www.widgetschmie.de/

today i got offered the best deal ever. a man with no shirt said that if i wanted to play for the giants, he could use a good catcher. then he thrust his hips in a lewd manner and blew a kiss my way. im not sure why he did that, but playing professional baseball would be a pretty neat thing. i may have to go and find him and take him up on his offer. i would have thought the giants were more professional about their recruiting thought.

adium (http://www.adiumx.com/) – IM client
quicksilver (http://www.blacktree.com/) – essential launcher/search/do-shit-faster utility (see 'what is quicksilver? (http://docs.blacktree.com/quicksilver/what_is_quicksilver)')
growl (http://growl.info/) – app notification utility
cyberduck (http://cyberduck.ch/) – ftp client

Mo

Already got Adium, Growl and Cyberduck.
Thanks a lot.

Luke de Spa
08-30-2008, 06:39 AM
well, definitely make sure you get quicksilver. really is a UI seachange

handbrake (http://handbrake.fr/) – dvd ripper
flip4mac (http://www.flip4mac.com/wmv_download.htm) – windows media plugins for quicktime
stuffit expander (http://my.smithmicro.com/mac/stuffitexpander/download.html) – zip/archive utility

Mo
08-30-2008, 06:46 AM
Thanks again. Do I need flip4mac if I already got VLC and MPlayer? I mean, I hardly even use the Quicktime player.

Luke de Spa
08-30-2008, 06:59 AM
also: get the hang of using exposé (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2503) and dashboard (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2492)

Mo
08-30-2008, 07:05 AM
Already know (and love) both - as I said, I got that "Mighty Mouse", so switching i.e. to Exposé is pretty neat. Thanks, Luke.

Luke de Spa
08-30-2008, 07:11 AM
have you been using spaces, and if so is it useful? i'm still on tiger so i don't have it

Mo
08-30-2008, 07:14 AM
I have, and since I'm coming straight from Linux I quite enjoy it. It's pretty useful if you wanna do tons of stuff at the same time, or just like to kinda organize your working environment.

So Macs arn't so damn perfect, are they? You still need to use fuckin' third party shit just to do certain things properly, and even then they might not fully work.

used to Alt+Q
cause of keyboard layout pressing Apple+Q (which would be "quit")
instead of Alt+L

AFAIR, you got an iMac, right?

And maybe it's just me, but the Firefox adblock stuff is working even better on Macs. For example, I don't get those annoying MasterCard or Chilly's ads during full TDS or CR epsiodes anymore. Fuck yeah!

Luke de Spa

macbook. i guess you get a crazy euro keyboard.
