BREAKING NEWS: Just saw this on Interference: Apparently Bono and co. have thrown in the towel and decided to leak the entire album on the internet. This post has a link to the leak!
I listened once to the four yousendit clips (rapidshare fifth clip has been deleted). Am I alone in thinking these sound disappointingly boring and meandering, and generally without any dynamics whatsoever? I mean, it sounds like a bunch of lazy summer radio singles.
Also, the production on these is horrible, what the hell.

U2 dose this with every album the past 3 albums have had some BS story about how the songs somehow got stolen from them. It's amazing that people for this PR trick every time.

Umm it's U2, they have record the same song over and over again for going on 30 years now.

From "All That You Can't Leave Behind," I'd agree with you. Which is disappointing. I used to like them quite a bit.

They manage to hang on by recording one really great album out of every 3-4, Achtung Baby, Joshua Tree... People tried saying How to dismantle an atomic bomb was amazing but that was just really pop crap. The last time they did anything interesting was Zooropa, total failure but at least they tried, since they it's just recycled pop crap.

90's and even post 2000 have had great songs from U2.
Your Blue Room
Do You Feel Loved
Please
Mofo
The Wanderer
Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me, Kill Me
Ground Beneath Her Feet
New York
All That You Can't Leave Behind is great songwriting. Bomb sucks because of the production, except for Love and Peace or Else (an ATYCLB leftover).
The new material is interesting because they are playing in minor keys again; which I though U2 always sounded their best usually (AB, Zooropa & POP).
and whoever said U2 has done "recycled pop crap" just STFU.
Show me some recycled pop crap that sounds this good

Apologies a band who made good music consistently a long time ago.

they have 9 good/often great albums [boy/oct/war/fire/tree/hum/ab/zoo/pop] and a lot of non-lp stuff that was good. unfortunately their records have sucked since [and most def. including] atyclb [and its success is possibly somewhat to blame for them not coming back on the next record]. so what? there have been very few bands that could consistently release both good and popular albums over the course of 30 years...oh wait, yeah, no one has.

Looks like we have ourselves a U2 apologist - isn't that worse than a Holocaust denier?

my hatred for Bono really overshadows my feelings for this band.
but U2 have got such a huge worldwide fanbase, and they mean alot to so many people. For this, i think they deserve credit.

I just love how pissy they get, and they can never make an argument. It's like once they actually think about it they realize you are right and just blurt out "well they sold a lot of records." We all have shitty bands we like you don't need to defend everything. For fucks sake it's 2008 and we are on a TSP message board, we all listen to shit.

I still really like that album and, like somebody said, Zooropa isn't great but at least they were trying something different. I liked some of the stuff on All That You Can't Leave Behind but after that it all sounds pretty much the same. A lot of their stuff from the 1980s is great though and that's probably why I still give their new stuff a chance.

Agreed.
U2 from 1991-2000 had a creative peak most bands would dream of having.
Achtung Baby
Zooropa
Passengers (with Brian Eno)
Pop
ATYCLB
I defend ATYCLB because I consider U2 was still in that creative peak and it shows in songs (Ground, New York, and although the album was definitely more "mainstream"; even songs like Walk On and Stuck In A Moment had great melodies). The U2 haters seem to say one of two things, or both usually:
a) I think Bono is a ____ because ____
b) U2 is contemporary radio rock blah blah
Really what Bono does in his own time, trying to save humanity; whatever it is it that bothers you personally shouldn't affect your opinion on U2 as a band, and as songwriters. And U2 really, really did the opposite since 1987. Think about what was going on during that time musically, or in "contemporary" music; Poison, Guns all that bullshit that actually is irrelevant while U2 was doing what in '87?
Exploring the opposite, roots music. Grunge in the 90's-U2 does the opposite. Thinking outside of the box is what U2 does best and the haters don't understand that.
So after 13 years of doing things that are different and now in 2000 they want to make a radio friendly album that has strong inspired songwriting? Then by all means do it. There is nothing wrong with that, The Beatles did it and even BC tried to with Zwan.

IMO, these clips are too crappy in terms of quality for me to make any judgment. I do like the fact that U2 at least claims to be trying to go in a different direction with their new album...I'm going to reserve judgment until I listen to the real deal.
