It's been over three months since the last one ended and I think that is plenty of time. The way the last one was set up worked out pretty well so I say we stick with it. Uploading mixes, no theme, a limit of eighty minutes, untagged files, etc. If anybody wants to recommend something that might work out better feel free. The original thread with all the details is here (http://forums.netphoria.org/showthread.php?t=158411&highlight=exchange).

There were three members who, as far as I know, did not make mixes last time: <s>Floppy Nono</s>, I'm Hardcore, and Pumpkins23836. If you are one of these members (or their recipient) and things have since been taken care of please let me know. Otherwise, don't expect to participate in this one if you were a deadbeat.

SIGN UPS ARE CLOSED!!

I have begun to send PMs out with links to mixes. Those crossed off below are those who have been sent a link to their mix already.

Thus far we have:

The only thing I remember is me telling you that you should have PM'd me instead of letting me wonder what was going on and having to try to piece it together from your other posts. You never sent me a PM or anything though, because I would have updated my Excel workbook. I'm pretty sure I would have remembered had you told me you sent something. You're welcome to participate this time if you want.

Not to be a bitch but not PMing me was frustrating when I said in like every post to PM me if there were any problems. It was totally understandable that you did not complete the mix with the other stuff going on but for you (and everybody else participating) I'll say it now just to get it out of the way: If ANYTHING comes up that might delay your mix past whatever deadline we set or might prevent you from participating all together, PLEASE CONTACT ME.

How does this work again?

What we did last time was:

1. Let people sign up for a week or so.
2. After sign-ups are closed, I randomly assign you a person to make a mix for.
3. I send everybody a PM with the name of who to make the mix for.
4. Participants have two weeks to make the mix, upload it somewhere (preferably not yousendit.com) and send me the link.
5. I will send the link to your partner so the recipient has no idea who made their mix.
6. The recipient listens to and posts a review of some kind of the mix they received.
7. After a review is posted, the person who made the mix can reveal the tracklist and themselves to who they made it for.

Last time we limited the mixes to eighty minutes since that's the limit on most CDRs (in case the recipient wants to burn it onto a CDR to make it easier to listen to) and asked that people try their best to untag the songs on their mix so their recipient has no idea what to expect.

Well, that would really only work if we all did that. I sort of thought half the fun of making one was chatting with the person you made it for to see what they thought of it. I'm not into really rap and metal (this is broad, and i like a bit of metal but i wouldn't consider myself a fan of the genre). A few have already completed their mixes and I have forwarded the links to their respective recipients. There's a lot of time left so if you are like me and tend to spend way too long nitpicking everything, don't worry too much about rushing things. :)

ok my review:

this mix just owned because it included Flight of the Conchords, it doesn't matter what else was in the mix! (but to be fair, I also enjoyed many of the other songs, it was a good mix of genres/styles - was not familiar with most of the music, but will listen to the mix again =))

Comprehensive review:

1 cool little intro song

2 this was pretty cool. i recognise it to.

3 pixies? frank black? it's mildly recognisable, i think it's from teenager of the year which i used to have and lost after giving it a couple of spins. probably gonna give this a download now.

4 good change of pace. liked it.

5 i really liked this one, just when i thought it was going for some crappy derivative styling it did a 180 and made it all make sense.

6 burden in my hand, kinda good to hear a song i can recognise in a mix.

7 Jackie Blue, should be a 2 in a row, but i've never actually heard this before. decent, cool solos, good to hear for completist reasons.

8 i love perth, probably could make some smart arse comment. but perth's alright. as long as you don't care to much about "culture".

9 alright. reminded me of something i can't put my finger on.

10 alright.

11 elliot smith. not sure which song. someone i've been meaning to check out more thoroughly.

12 Mirah- Jerusalem tagged still. this was ok.

13 pavement or stephen malkmus. i liked this a lot. probably gonna compel me to finally check out brighten the corners/terror twilight and onward. eheheh eheheh eheh eh eh

14 this was good

15 alright

I enjoyed this. Nothing glaringly bad after one listen. i'll probably give it a few more spins and then i'll definitely be checking out some of the bands from it.

What is odd about your choice of musicians is... I actually play a guitar that was owned by the (a?) guitar player from TV on The Radio (a Gretsch Duo Jet) that I bought used 5 years back... and I have absolutely no idea who the band is and have never heard anything from them... until that mix. haha... I wonder if my guitar was used on that song!

Honestly, most of those musicians I have never heard anything from although a few of the names are familiar.. so in reality - to me, they are obscure!

1. Sweet intro. Sounds like some Aphex Twin-type shit.
2. Ping Pong beats is a pretty good conceit. Really dig the vibe.
3. Good song. Not much else to say.
4. Most conventional song so far…I liked the previous stuff better.
5. Another good one. Songs about watching TV usually do it for me. Organ is almost always awesome.
6. The first half didn’t do much for me, but the horns and the guitar solo halfway through were cool and I like where it went after that.
7. Oooh, this one is really cool. The synth interjections after every line are ace. Good beats too.
8. I didn’t even realize he wasn’t singing in English at first because it’s such a solid pop song. Cool guitars. I feel like I’ve heard something by this artist before but I can’t put my finger on it.
9. This is some trippy shit. Sounds like Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, but with more acid. I love it.
10. My favorite so far. It’s probably going to give me nightmares, but they will be bad-ass nightmares.
11. Pretty sure this is the Notwist. I’ve never heard a full album by them but this makes me want to. The synths/strings on the chorus are very pleasing.
12. Soundtrack of Our Lives. I’m familiar with them and not crazy about them, but this is a pretty good song. Lots of energy.
13. Interlude. Dece.
14. Not much to say about this one. Not bad.
15. Like this one better than the previous non-English song. Lots of German dudes on this mix I think.
16. I don’t know what happened to Track 16. I can’t get it to play in any program even though it looks like an audio file. Probably my fault.
17. Very good, love the strings.
18. Holy shit, mariachi with electronics programming? Mind is blown.
19. This is pretty odd. Not that previous stuff wasn’t, but this doesn’t do a lot for me.
20. I really love the panning on the drums in the chorus-like parts. I like a lot more about it but that’s the only one I can describe.
21. These are the first chicks on here I think. Don’t care much for this.
22. Awwww yeah…Two Gallants – Despite What You’ve Been Told. Only song that I’m intimately familiar with. Makes a great closing track.

Overall, I good have done with a few less instrumentals, even though I enjoyed all of the ones on here. Definitely going to check out more from whoever did #s 9, 10, and the Notwist.

the mix made for me:

TRACK 01 (dot m4a) - one of my favorite of all the tracks. more so because of the instrumentation and less because on behalf of the vocals. although that is the strange part. half the time i didn't care for them at all and the other i really enjoyed them. probably a real grower track.
TRACK 02 (dot mp3) - not such a fan of the guy in the background yakking, but her voice is as solid as the nuance-instruments heard throughout in the background.
TRACK 03 (dot mp3) - so far all of the tracks have had really cool intros. and once again there is a guy who won't shut up in the background. i guess that type of thing really annoys me. lyrically i like this song because she sings about the one cliche i won't let die "moth to a flame" which was all i was thinking about during this song. and so far all female vocals which is definitely a plus.
TRACK 04 (dot mp3) - a change of pace with some pop style vocals swirling around with the instruments. i dunno what to think of this song, but i like listening (not sure if i like the song though). i like the cheesy lyrics though.
TRACK 05 (dot wav) - i half expected rezeznik from the goo goo dolls to start singing on this track when i first heard it. definitely liked the song more towards the end than i did at first. really this one needs to be listened to a few more times before i'll appreciate it for what i think it could be worth.
TRACK 06 (dot mp3) - although i admit this song goes pretty well in the mix, i fancy it being transmuted into its rock form because it would be a swell skipping stone.
TRACK 07 (dot mp3) - finally some background vocals sans a male voice, but damn they are cheesy.
TRACK 08 (dot mp3) - no need to say that i don't like the dude in the background at this point. a much better track without that bastard. not so much a track to grade with a scorecard, but it holds its own otherwise.
TRACK 09 (dot mp3) - back to much better ground here. really pulls the ailing mix out of its slump and triumphs over all previous tracks. you can count on it that i'll be rescuing this little gem and storing it away in safe keeping. pretty curious to see who this is. fairy tale lyrics and playful end-song vocals cheer up the hell out of this already clam-happy tune.
TRACK 10 (dot m4a) - billy and d'arcy sound funny here...
TRACK 11 (dot mp3) - back to the nice intros. this mix maker has a nose for beautiful intros. another fine track and (the third) one i actually know. and some background vocals that aren't sloppy male pieces of shit or cheesed out female lines.
TRACK 12 (dot mp3) - this song reminds me of going to the barber shoppe as a young child while it was raining. a really bad feeling. something is not right here. gives me the willies
TRACK 13 (dot mp3) - another cover (just kidding..) which i really like. i have a feeling a lot of sabbath fans would thumbs down this track for treading onto their territory, but i'm not absolutely crazy about BS so i give this song two welcome arms. by the way i was watching jeopardy today (some of the rerun episodes on GSN of the ironman Ken Jennings) and one of his opponents was an "orchid specialist" - that is, unless i misunderstood the guy. that guy was certainly no ironman.
TRACK 14 (dot mp3) - no bad talk here. i'm getting tired and this song is certainly helping out. not too mellow, but her voice is comforting.
TRACK 15 (dot m4a) - takes a lot to have a good song without music helping you out, but this track does it well. as much as i like this i'm more curious of the story behind how it got on your head and then into your computer and finally onto this mix. please tell its story. time to wear that starry crown!
TRACK 16 (dot mp3) - the shaky recording is making my head wobble. better not do this one on the headphones next time. really a harsh track and definitely one of the better ones here although it took it a moment to get its balance.
TRACK 17 (dot m4a) - has its moments, but i really wish the vocals were buried in the whole song like that are at a couple spots. little too in my face. 99.9 degrees hmm.... whatever. i was sad to see the end of the mix after this one was over.

Summary:

After rereading what i wrote about each song one might think i wasn't such a fan of this mix, but that's without what would be considered a doubt untrue - i would only remove about three songs from this mix to make it really solid. however even those songs were really fun to talk about. in terms of flow (including all songs) this mix was well thought out, or at the very least this person was naturally talented at slapping down the order for a harmonious mixture of things. mostly though i can't wait to see who Miss TRACK 09 is. i'm not gonna cheat. so i'll have to wait and see. just like a song from the the last mix made for me i'll keep this trinket on the Flashdrives of My Mind.

Mix experience: 9/10.

The mystery of who track 09 is will have to wait until I get home from work today, I completely forgot what song that was!!! I am glad you liked the mix, my theme this time was "girls" and I tried to get a decent amount of different styles in there including some fun and silly songs (hey I LIKE the 80s ^_^). I will give you the tracklisting and why I choose the songs I did and what I think about them later tonight. Glad you enjoyed the mix!

that's weird that i didn't recognize the Murder By Death song. i have an album by them.

And MbD's later albums were a lot different, maybe that's why. Even his voice changed (or they swapped singers, I don't know).

ok here is track list (my theme was girls, girls, girls)

1) siouxsie and the banshees - kiss them for me: chose this song as an opener to set the mood for the mix (my theme was chicks, and I was going to put in some throw back songs since I primarily listen to 80s and 90s) plus I love this song.

2) sneaker pimps - 6 underground: choose this song as a follow up because I thought both kiss them for me and this song shared a basic slow dancey grove that you can nod your head to. plus this chicks voice is hot.

3) janet jackson - thats the way love goes: really thought this song would flow well after 6 underground because this is a totally head bobbing song with a great beat. plus, while it is a few years before 6 underground, it's still in the same general time period and i thought of it while putting the mix together. also the song is pretty hot, and the video was hot also (from what i remember, janet was looking damn good)

4) missy elliott - the rain (Supa Dupa Fly): chose this song because, while i generally only listen to rockish stuff, i wanted to throw in a good mix, so that is why i threw in janet and figured this song was a good follow up since they are both generally hip hoppy and this is another song with a slow head bob to it

5) the sundays - wild horses: so at this point i was changing the mix up from dancey stuff, figured a good acoustic cover song was a good transition, plus i hate the rolling stones, but this cover is awesome. very pretty voice, love love love the chorus.

6) norah jones - don't know why: probably my favorite female vocalist (or tied with mazzy star (hope sandoval) since I had changed the mix from hip hoppy to acoustic i threw this little ditty (while not acoustic) it has a good jazzy feel, and i really thought that her basic melodies and amazing vocal prowess complimented the great chorus from the prior song.

7) the bangles - if she knew what she wants: similarly to siousxie and the banshees, another throw back but with a completely different feel. more poppy than any of the other songs on the mix, threw this in because i didn't want it to be too too girly girly girly (with the sundays and norah jones before) and this is a fun song, plus the vocals are similar to two other artists coming up in the mix (stevie knicks and courtney love)

8) hole - awful: as i alluded to before, i thought the vocals and melodies from the bangles complimented courtney love - i really like the melody of this song and didn't want to put in a usual hole song.

9) Eisley - Mr. Pine: I first got turned onto these girls when i saw their music video on a local music station here in ATX, they are from tyler texas, anyway they were hot and then as soon as they began to sing my heart was won. their vocal harmonies are disgustingly amazing, and their subject matter (faries and ice castles and shit like that) is just too cute and magical. I can listen to these girls anytime of the day.

10) Blondie - Dreaming: throw back again, and you can probably guess why i chose this song.. alot of pumpkins fans don't know the original and its pretty good.

11) Cranberries - linger: the first song that introduced me to the cranberries, while i am not a very big fan besides their singles, I think it has a similar feel to the sundays and it has a great melody

12) fleetwood mac - gold dust woman - stevie knicks is just fucking awesome. i also had hole on the mind, which made me think of this song right away.

13) the cardigans - iron man: love this band, very unique vocals, great take on sabbath... it's just so out there lol.

14) mazzy star - blue light: tied for my favorite female vocalist with norah jones, decided on a non single and decided to slow down the mix from the wacky iron man cover prior.

15) allison kraus - down to the river to pray - my 2nd favorite female vocalist, great little ditty from the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack.

16) Paz - desert plains: i really dig this cover

17) susana vega - 99.9: ended the mix with a song that always gets stuck in everyones head, yes i know a very mean thing to do... but what can i say, im devilish :smoke:

5) the sundays - wild horses: so at this point i was changing the mix up from dancey stuff, figured a good acoustic cover song was a good transition, plus i hate the rolling stones, but this cover is awesome. very pretty voice, love love love the chorus.that's funny cause i dont listen to the stones much and that's my fav song of theirs, i listen to the sundays a lot more and don't particularly care for the cover. anyway her voice is just the prettiest thing.

13) the cardigans - iron man: love this band, very unique vocals, great take on sabbath... it's just so out there lol.

argh my guy left the m3u tags. i'll try not to look

1. i did see that this track was by david byrne and brian eno. a nice mid tempo piece. it stomps. that guitar solo sounds like the solos billy played on TFE, a good thing. i'll probably look into whatever album this is on.
2. a slightly eclectic combination of timbres. i like the swirling trombones. then guitars. then strings. now harps and glockenspiels. and the result is a vivid soundscape. i definitely want more of this
3. i can honestly say i wasn't expecting this. i'm a sucker for harmonies like in the end there
4. i feel i should know who this is. a comfortable little jam.
5. good sounds on here. i dig the atonal ambient stuff
6. quality vocals.
7. i accidentally saw "a sunny day in glasgow" as the name of this band and it's a very appropriate name. i'd like to hear the song that comes after it on the record, with it being an obvious segue.
8. this songs very "earthy". and that guitar came out of nowhere. the drums on this tune are great.
9. a nice change of pace. minimal yet distinct instrumentation. rich voicing on the harmonies.
10. is this the moody blues or something. jk. first spine tingle of the mix. wait this is the flaming lips isnt it. alright. cool. those guys never fail at impressing me or getting my admiration.

i was interrupted i'll finish this review tomorrow.

11. wait. this is the track that comes after the track that prompted me to say "i'd like to hear the song that come's after it on the record". cool.
12. i don't like the choirboy type voice of the singer. it took me a second to realize that this is a cover. the instrumentation sounds stiff. or like it was recorded in midi at the same velocity throughout.
13. is this another brian eno track? either way, i like it a lot. real slow like.
14. great pace. almost comical and sarcastic in its tone.

As far as the m3u tags I guess I don't know how to get everything off of the mp3s. i deleted everything from itunes and changed the filename, but there's more i suppose. i would like someone to tell me what im not doing, but oh well for now.

TRACK OL - "I Feel My Stuff" by Brian Eno and David Byrne [Vocals] from Everything that Happens will Happen Today [2008]
TRACK O2 - "Falling Horses" by Efterklang from Under Giant Trees [2007]
TRACK O3 - "The Lion Sleeps Tonight"[Cover] by Brian Eno [Single]
TRACK O4 - "Lorge" by El Ten Eleven from El Ten Eleven [2004]
TRACK O5 - "Soul of Carmen Miranda"by Brian Eno and John Cale [Vocals] from Words for the Dying [1989]
TRACK O6 - "Owl" by Crystal Antlers from Crystal Antlers [2008]
TRACK O7 - "Wake Up Pretty" by A Sunny Day in Glasgow from Scribble Mural Comic Journal [2007]
TRACK O8 - "Baby's on Fire" by Brian Eno from Here Come the Warm Jets [1974]
TRACK O9 - "Bottomliners" by Brian Eno from Another Day on Earth [2005]
TRACK LO - "Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung" by The Flaming Lips from At War With the Mystics [2006]
TRACK LL - "No. 6 Von Karman Street" by A Sunny Day in Glasgow from Scribble Mural Comic Journal [2007]
TRACK L2 - "The Hollow (Constantly Consuming Mix)" [Cover] by A Perfect Circle from aMOTION [2004]
TRACK L3 - "Late October" by Brian Eno and Harold Budd from The Pearl [1984]
TRACK L4 - "The Road" by Cinelli [unfinished, unreleased]

Thank you for giving my mix a listen. I tried to put a fair amount of Brian Eno on there to showcase some of his different styles and eras. As you can tell he went from glam to ambient to electronic, but it's all distinctly him. "Bottomliners" has been one of my favorite songs ever since Another Day on Earth was released. The other artists on here (except The Flaming Lips) are generally just things i've been listening to this year and thought would go well on this mix. "The Road" is a track by a couple of my roommates, but this particular version is fairly dated - i'm the song's biggest fan and am looking forward to them completing it. "The Hollow" I like so much that I have a hard time judging this version on its own. I agree about it sounding stiff and I wonder if Maynard + Billy and gang like it at all.

Mix review:

Track 1 / 2 / 3: All three are very short and to be honest were over before I could really figure out exactly what I thought of them. I gave them a few more listens but other than being pretty sure there is a clip of Billy Corgan talking in the second one I am still not sure what to think.

Track 4: It took me about a minute or so to figure out this song was in another language because the vocals sound sort of muddled to me. Sounds very much of the 1980s but beyond that I haven’t a clue.

Track 5: This sounds a lot like track four except the vocals do not sound as muddled. Lots of weird sounds in the background which makes it a bit more interesting but not anything I’d normally listen to.

Track 6: I am pretty sure this is Seal. Not bad but a bit long. By the end I was itching for it to be over. Seems like a song I would either grow to really like or really hate after repeat listening.

Track 7: This track sounds more like something I would listen to but I’m not crazy about the vocalist. His voice is somewhat familiar but I can’t place it.

Track 8: I’ve actually heard this song before! I am pretty sure it’s Tears For Fears.

Track 9: The lyrics in this song are familiar but I do not think I have heard this version. Is this My Bloody Valentine? I never really got into them. I am too lazy to Google the lyrics but am pretty sure this is a cover.

Track 10: This is four seconds long and pretty much just has a scream in it.

Track 11: I like this song and have no idea who it is.

Track 12: Very synth-y instrumental. I thought it ended twice when it sort of switched directions but it’s still the same track. I like it but towards the end I am sort of tired of it.

Track 13: No idea. A bass heavy track definitely from the 1980s, it’s not bad. I like the background vocals but it annoys me that the lead vocals are sort of low and the robot voice or whatever the hell that is in the background.

Track 14: This is definitely Depeche Mode. Another band I never really delved into but I do like this song.

Track 15: A nice piano instrumental.

Track 16: I have no idea who this is. He sounds British and it’s a live recording and there are people audibly singing along. I like his voice and it’s a nice little song on the piano.

Track 17: Oh my God, Iced Earth? I used to work with a guy who I used to swap mix CDs every so often and I remember he put this song on one of them and I must have laughed for ten minutes straight after listening to it. Just so over the top and the vocals just kill me. I am almost positive this is the same song he put on there.

Track 18: I feel like I have heard this song before but not this version. A cover maybe? Not bad, one of the better on here.

Track 19: No clue. Not bad, sounds like something I would listen to but not at all familiar.

Track 20: A bit melancholy and in the same vein as a lot of the stuff on here, sort of synth-y sounding and definitely from the 1980s. Not bad though, I liked it more than the earlier stuff. I can hear the vocals!

Track 21: One of my favorites on here. A bit long but I enjoyed it. Again, I have no clue who this is.

Track 22: Spacehog. It’s nice to know a song on here and not have to guess. I still like this song. The first time I heard the song his voice annoyed the crap out of me but after a while I really liked it. I remember the lead singer had a really ugly first name.

Track 23: Ah, Prince. A bit corny sounding and not subtle in the least, I would expect nothing less. A nice, fun track to end the mix with.

I would give it a 6/10 overall. Had a lot of stuff I would probably never listen to on my own, and I think sometimes this worked both for and against it. I am anxious to see who some of the artists are so I can find more about them or know to avoid them like the plague. Made for a very interesting listen. Thanks :)

1/2/3 - brandon edge (myself) - please fuck/take-off/25 words or less [2008]. 3 short fruity loop things for an intro. take-off is like a song, and yeah the sample is bc from a soundcheck. most of my samples come from youtube. my voice can be heard on 3.

4 - cocteau twins - pink orange red ["tiny dynamine/echoes in a shallow bay", 1985]. pretty much my fav song for the past couple years. the sound of an alternate reality. which a lot of their stuff is to me. i have little or no idea what the lyrics are on most of their songs, and that's probably one reason why i love them so much. it's never tied to one concrete meaning and can shift depending on where you're at at the time. probably my 2nd all time fav artist. my fav album by them, it was actually 2 ep's released really close together but it's really an album.

5 - cocteau twins - pale clouded white. another track from same album. decided i should've kept it to one track from this after i up'd it...couldn't help myself i guess.

6 - seal - deep water ["s/t", 1991]. i dunno, prolly wouldnt in-clude this if i were making the mix today, but i've always loved this song. i think it's progressive and meaningful. but it works better on the record as it leads into 'crazy' which is imo one of the best songs ever.

7 - tom edge (my dad) - destiny [2003, i think]. felt like in-cluding sth by him, his stuff is really varied, but i like when he writes these hopeless songs. i prolly should've put another of his on here.

8 - tears for fears - change ["the hurting", 1983]. a powerful album imo, underrated i think.

9 - wire - map ref. 41°N 93°W ["154", 1979]. yeah mbv covered this, i like the original better, though mbv are among my very fav artists. awesome lyrics. i love how he says "chorus" before the chorus, lol.

10 - me screaming fuck you [no offense :p]. excerpt from a longer waste of time called "fuck you (just a-felt like sayin' it)" i rec'd in 1995.

11 - the fixx - secret separation ["walkabout", 1986]. i LOVE this fucking song. now and then this band did truly amazing stuff in between some kinda mediocre stuff. oh well. i almost put another of theirs on this, "driven out". little note: their hit "red skies" i always hear the re-recorded version they did..sometime..which is half as good as the original version which was on their first album 'shuttered room' fyi.

12 - brandon edge - the leslie machine [2008]. ehh, in hindsight i shoulda left this off i just had been spending a lot of time that day putting this track together and felt like it. it bores me too but i spent quite a bit of time on it.

13 - buggles - i love you (miss robot) ["the age of plastic", 1980]. one of my favs..love the vocoder..awesome sonic images for me with this.

14 - depeche mode - get the balance right [single, 1983]. it was either this or "shake the disease"...speaks for itself...who doesn't love DM?

15 - gary numan - down in the park (piano version) ["telekon" 1980, 90s reissue]. this is a bonus track on the reissue of his 4th album. funny that i didnt put a track with vocals but i just love this...nothing else he did sounds like this, i dont think. probably should've put sth else too. if i had it would've been "oh! didn't i say" from his first single or "face to face" a bonus track from the reissue of "dance" [1981]. i'd recommend hearing the first 5 records, and avoiding anything else unless you really love him or sth. i'm crazy so i have it all, but no one except a diehard would prolly be interested in that stuff. since the mid 90s he's been a rather boring "industrial rock" wannabe, though i do like some of those songs, one being "pressure" off his last record. aaanyway...

16 - howard jones - no one is to blame [live..i dunno when..the original version was off "dream into action", 1985]. just randomly dl'd this live version a while back, and i love it. this was a song from my childhood that meant a lot to me. basically everything's a bunch of crap but no one is to blame, so you're supposed to feel even worse, which creates this awesome effect, yo.

17 - judas priest - the ripper ["sad wings of destiny" 1976]. man, if all metal was this great i'd be a total metalhead. the vocals are just masterful to the extreme, much more effective than the growling junk of a lot of bands nowadays. the man had a gift, truly. never turn your back on the RIPPAAAAAAAAAH. btw that album title sounds really corganesque, he's certainly listened to this record a few times.

18 - the nerves - hanging on the telephone ["s/t ep", 1976]. this is the original version..blondie had a hit with it but their version sucks. this band shouldn't have broken up after releasing one ep, seriously. bad idea guys.

19 - dada - dim ["puzzle", 1992]. can't this car go any faster. cause i can still see where i am. YOU SHOULDA TOLD ME the trouble i was in, before my life went diiiiiiiim. love this record. i never did look into their others fsr.

20 - OMD (orchestral manoeuvres in the dark) - souvenir ["architecture and morality", 1981]. they did some great stuff on their first 3 records and some good stuff throughout their career. i can listen to omd for days.

21 - the church - two places at once ["sometime anywhere", 1994]. i went through a phase this year for a couple months where they were all i listened to. i'd recommend the album starfish, but move "under the milky way" to be right after "spark" and not as the 2nd track. album's much better this way. this song here is really cool, and yeah, slightly long but i love it. beautiful.

22 - spacehog - in the meantime ["resident alien" 1995]. a classic. nuff said. i was done with the mix then noticed this and just had to. and that put it over 80 mins.

23 - prince - jack u off ["controversy" 1981]. so i just said fuck it. this song is hilarious in several different ways. you've got to admire prince for not giving a fuck what ppl would say about sth like this. weird and shameless, how it should be.

Can you use that on songs you have purchased from the iTunes store?

i would assume yes.

No.
It works great with M4As, but it won't play converted M4Ps.

The first post is now up to date as far as who has received their mix. If you have sent me your mix and your recipient has not been crossed off, please send me a PM. There are still thirteen people who need to send me a mix by Monday. If you are one of these people, PLEASE let me know if you think your mix will be late. I'd much rather know that's it is going to be late than to send you fifteen bitchy PMs until you respond.

typing these after hearing them for the 1st time:
track 1 - wow. this is like wilco covering some oldie i've never heard that's better than any of their songs!?
track 2 - might as well be the shins if it ain't. doesn't stand out as much
track 3 - this songs screams out JUNO every second
track 4 - hahaha. well looks like i officially have been given a twee/lo fi mix. this song has some life to it musically but breathy quiet vocals dont do much for me
track 5 - is this from elephant 6? not bad. but like all of that stuff it's like why not just listen to the animals or ten days after.
track 6,7,8 - nice enough
track 9 - now this is awesome. ive never really heard anything like this even though its super simple. and im a sucker for backwards stuff.
track 10 - meh
tracks 11, 12 and 13 - these are nice but really drift by
track 14 - love the shoegazeness
track 15 - this was a great unexpected kick after the last 6 tracks
track 16 - yes!! fuck this is a perfect song and an orgasmic performance. ive only heard this version once before, kudos!
and now the netphoria xmas song came up next on itunes, perfect. well that was a promising first listen... im not a huge lo fi or twee fan... objectively speaking that's not a big deal but it still could have used more variety. although i like a handful of artists like the ones on here i only recognize the one last track, so there's some i'll be checking out for sure.

i made that mix, im glad you enjoyed it. i was going through some of your posts and threads and saw that we had a lot in common, and then i started putting together a mix. the last mix i had on here and a couple of others i did were all over the place, and i guess one of the things missing was steady flow, so as i started picking off songs i decided to keep a steadier flow rather than make it bounce around. but of course its a double-edged sword because then there wouldnt be enough variety, which i suppose hurt this mix. rather than give you a stream of bouncy fast songs, some you were more likely to have heard, i decided to go in the other direction by having it start off with some lo-fi and pop and settle to the mellow vibe. and of course i wanted to close the mix with an under appreciated gem by a band both of us love.

here is my review which i hope does justice to the effort the person put into making this mix. i just wrote this out as i listened and didn't go back over it second guessing. it was a fun experience to listen to it and there's a few artists i'd like to check out some more.

01 - interesting. at first it kinda reminded me of modest mouse. very dynamic. really like this.
02 - guitars sound like a pearl jam song, spin the black circle maybe i'm thinking of? ok song.
03 - gotta love a double bass. not really my bag though, these days.
04 - like the tempo of this and the guitar sound.
05 - i laughed, a lot. nice one
06 - i love the xylophone or whatever it is, but the singer kind of got on my nerves.
07 - loved the music right from the start, but didn't like the vocals intially. they quickly grew on me though. this is seriously good.
08 - at first i thought, oh a nice quiet acoustic one, that's more to my liking these days, but it expanded to much more. i thought it came together really well and i quite enjoyed it.
09 - hmm... i like the production on this one. lot's going on and by 3 minutes in i was right into it, didn't want it to end.
10 - might sound strange, but i pictured myself sitting down to a nice meal and listening to this, except for the fact that the lyrics would kind of distract me from the meal. so i guess as an instrumental in would be great in that setting. overall an enjoyable listen.
11 - ben kweller - my apartment, nice choice!
12 - a dylan song i'm not familiar with (ashamed to say). great!
13 - one word - tight!
14 - can't think of much to say about this one. i loved the intro.
15 - kinda catchy...not really digging it though
16 - this just sounds really good. love the fiddle or whatever it is. keen to know who it is, but i'm going to refrain from googling.
17 - like the drums on this and the vocalist. repeated it a few times. it sounds familiar, maybe i've heard it already...
18 - ready please, mr music
19 - absolutely love the guitar, who the hell is this?
20 - sweet sound, if this isn't an old song, it sure sounds like it. nice
21 - see 18
22 - ok, i laughed. not a bad way to end it.

i'm glad you enjoyed the majority of the mix. i tried to make this one a little less serious than the last time we did this. i have the albums for all the tracks i put on your mix (except for The Kingston Trio song), and sometimes more, so if you want anything, i'd be more than happy to upload them.

you should post the link to the mix.

i'm especially glad you dug the Apartment track. that whole album (along with some b-sides) are really solid and it's probably my favorite album of last year. The English Beat (which later on became Fine Young Cannibals (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_wzi-kTVOI)) is one of the first bands i ever listened to. my dad had a cassette of them and Oingo Boingo that i listened to all the time when i was in 3rd grade. The Dandy Warhols' song is from their new record. i'm seeing them for the first time (after being in to them for over 10 years) on the 22nd, so i had to put a track of theirs on here, and that one always makes me laugh.

some of the artists i'm still kinda new to. here's some youtube vids that got me into some of them.

here's my review after a listen

track 1 - short little distorted guitar ditty. not a bad way to start a mix.
track 2 - oooh this is fun. starts off dark and gets really fast and glitchy. holy crap like a loud scream right there, really digging this. kinda settles during the second half
track 3 - this one's like 10 minutes long, so i might as well get settled. geetar is wailing, makes it sound like a reaaal epic. pretty cool, all this feels like intense buildup. the little guitar interlude here 3 or so mins in is nice. some reverbed screams at the end. this song is a little long..
track 4 - awesome intro, reminiscent of minus the bear. now its mellow, now its picking up again. pretty cool.
track 5 - really sparse until about 4 minutes into the song. i like the transition right here, right when i was going to give up on it it picked up a bit. after all the spacing out the end of this track was a healthy change.
track 6 - and more spacey geetar. these vocals remind me of alice in chains.. probably a 90s band here? favorite song off the mix so far.
track 7 - this track rocks out more than any song on the mix so far, and im glad. dude is pissed in this song. feels like another throwback on the mix. pretty heavy.
track 8 - hm, this sounds like mark lanegan. maybe im just getting nostalgic. i need to listen to more of lanegan's stuff even if this isnt him. loving this song.
track 9 - this song is shaping up a lot better than that other 10 minute song. i like this song, who is this?
track 10 - i dig this. came and went but i like it still. some eastern influence.
track 11 - fun enough
track 12 - breezes through
track 13 - this song's called chewbacca. not much else to notice here.
track 14 - haha this evil voice can't help but make me chuckle. i like the instrumentation. here come the hardcore vocals. to be honest, i just dont like these screamy metal vocals, even though this is an interesting change.
track 15 - kind of a sparse little jazzy jingle. i just imagine a small little band in a club thats practically empty playing this song. about 9 minutes long, nothing really grabs me here.
track 16 - bouncy techno beat to start off this closer. more metal screaming. and now it's over! interesting pick for a closer.

overall: there was some variety in here, and there's lot of stuff id want to check out. i didnt really recognize anything. some of the material wasnt my cup of tea but it interested me nonetheless, and there are a few songs that definitely hit the spot. definitely enjoyed 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9. repeated listens will probably help along some of those spacey tracks. thanks to the mix maker.

here we go

1 - very cool instrumental. dig the violin a lot. is this final fantasy?
2 - beatles-like guitars. sounds like a 'beatles-in-the-90s' band. i like it
3 - the intro is atmospheric and very pretty. i really feel that i should know the name of this song or at least identify the band. i love it. i recognize the vocals / style. i want to say GBV but maybe not. awesome song.
4 - nice shoegazy track. again i think i recognize the vocals.
5 - i love this as well. it gives me a 60s feeling too, and it's very much up my alley.
6 - this also sounds like guided by voices to me. i love the guitars and all the layered vocals. and how it gets loud at 1:30 and then quiet and loud again.
7 - really cool beats / effects. i like it a lot. is this casiotone for the painfully alone by any chance?
8 - this is good and rockin'. if this is a current band, they're huge led zep & 70s fans :)
9 - nice cut copy song :)
10 - :( this still had the tag on, so i didn't have to guess. good song though
11 - very interesting intro and the percussion is pretty awesome. the song fits very well with the theme of the mix, i guess. indie-strong, yay! i really really like the vocals too. very pretty.
12 - one of my favourite songs (ever) :) october all over. cool that i finally really know a song on this mix
13 - i like how it starts all happy & simple and builds up. glockenspiel!
14 - good song to end on. it helps that it's so quiet in my room now and i can hear crickets through my window which adds on to the mood. his voice sounds very familiar too, and i feel pretty bad for not being able to place it, just like with the others..

great mix! i really enjoyed it :) and i think it had a lot of great new stuff on it that i have been meaning to hear for a while. thank you so much!!

I just got my link this morning and i'm listening to it now after a bike ride in from work in the freezing ass cold.

track 1 - nice start. just what i was in the mood for, for some reason. i love the intro. when the drum kicks in it swoops me away to a desert. i think i've heard this before, or i think i know it, but i'm not quite sure yet. the song changes so much. i know this song, but it's not connecting in my brain freeze. fantastic song.
track 2 - whee here we go, i love the drum beat and tempo of the song from the get go. if i had a bottle of whiskey in my hands during this i would down the whole thing and go into a frenzy. never heard this before. love the song, but i'm not sure how i feel about the vocal(ists) can't tell if its just one guy overdubbed or if its two guys. i really like it though. massive whiskey drinking frea kout though. i really dig this. the change up in the middle is a bit weird though. fucking love this.
track 3 - i can tell we're going for a alt-country feel, but this is weird, almost baroque. it borders, and i mean that loosely, on dresden dollnessish. but i like this, so it can't be that twat. this just gets better and better. the chick reminds me of martine from tricky's band back in the day. thumbs upple. love and truth, aw yeah. preach on.
track 4 - okay, it's time to start drinking. i love this song. i know it well, but damn. this is a drinking mixtape. bring that sweet lovin on home to me. yeah.
track 5 - i can tell from the first 3 seconds what band it is. i haven't heard this song, but i'm down with the opiates. hah hah. i love this song though. nice switch to a groove, driving at night. the lyrics kick ass and i can picture myself driving at night with sunglasses on, shooting heroin as i drive through the strip.
track 6 - change up in groove again, this one is a good track but never really gets grooving for me. i think it's the drum beat. can tell it's hand drums or something. the lyrics are fantastic, and i love the back up vocals, but its something taking my drug, whiskey, blues and desert kick off the track a little for some reason.
track 7 - something avant now, more performance artsy. it gets interesting, really interesting around the last minute or two of the song. the rest doesnt quite work for me. and the outro gets kind of too orchestra-ey. hmm.
track 8 - from the same as above? except this kicks ass. nice drum journey. good scratch workout
track 9 - give me some more of that deep bass. i know this immediately. love this track. reminds me of so many "eras". and nostalgia kicks in pretty hard too. i think of bands from my youth. this is ahead of it's time. fucking awesome track.
track 10 - slows down nicely here. makes me want to cry. good stuff.
track 11 - this is a nice little love song. aww love.
track 12 - weird production. love this immediately. give me a dark room and a disco ball, and a bunch of glow in the dark paint. i want to make love to this song. on a train. this is so good. what is it? i never want this song to end. it might very well keep me alive another 30 years. thank you for this one, really. i like it a lot lot.
track 13 - praise the lord, give me a hand clap. i like this comedown. it's a bit weird on the vocals. but it's something to play while i'm recovering in the gutter
track 14 - okay, it's time to go to work. i like the instrumentation on this track, it's weird, and repetitive and trance like, and is never really a song. cool fucking beats.
track 15 - a weird twist around back to the country. chillin in my trailer park trailer. having a smoke. waiting to die. great depressing stuff.
track 16 - an excited chill, slow groove. laying me back down to sleep. i know this one as soon as the vocal kicks in, and i think of so many things.... there is something about his voice, and when he's singing about love or heartache (which is alot, eh?) it's just so familiar and safe. and the lyrics are perfect. especially with my situation now, its just perfect. if you find something good hold onto it... burn all the shit away. ahhh.... heroin produced a lot of good music.

thank you to whoever made my mix, i find it fantastic and will enjoy listening to more of it repeatedly.

My review

#01 - A nice intro choice. Simple, instrumental, friendly. Sounds like someone deconstructed Johann Sebastian Bach though, and the drum loop is a bit dull. Kinda dawn-y.

#02 - Abba? C'mon now... http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon10.gif
I laughed, though I can't take this seriously.

#03 - I enjoy Joe Jackson quite a bit.

#04 - The Kinks!

#05 - Generic, but I like it; a solid rock song.

#06 - This is a very good Crash Test Dummies cover. I like it better than the original (which I only know from some live bootleg, but this doesn't sound like them at atll).

#07 - The first female voice, and I like it a lot. Who's that? I have the feeling that I should know this song...

#08 - More relaxed, but okay. I like the shakers and claps, they add a friendly touch. And again there's this feeling that I've heard this before.

#09 - Ahahaha. Perfect. At first I thought this was a girls voice, until I recognized the song.

#10 - Again, this is a track my dad would love (or maybe he already does). The fuck, why can't I remember song names?

#11 - I just burned "Dog In The Sand" for my girlfriend yesterday. http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon14.gif

#12 - Hell yeah, awesome guitar intro. Definitely an Irish band. http://forums.netphoria.org/wwwboard/icons/icon12.gif
What a nice instrumental, perfect interlude.

#13 - Could be from any year between 1969 and 2008. No idea, sounds like a 'classic' and, again, slightly familiar (especially the voice). Hm.
Great solo there at the end.

#14 - Zimmerman ftw.

#15 - Wow. Sounds like HIM vs John Mayer. Still, the first song I'd call "heavy".

#16 - I know that this song is on some compilation I once downloaded, but other than that... It's alright, something I'd listen to at 2 am.
I especially love the trumpets.

#17 - ABBA, again? Neat cover though, who's the lovely lady? Very chill.

#18 - Another instrumental? This could be the band from track one, with real instruments. I love how this song picks up momentum. Oh wait, there's the voice.
Wow, crunchy. What band is this?

#19 - This is called "She's Got You", right? Yeah, we sung this in our school choir once, I think. Alright version, maybe a bit too slow and reduced.

#20 - You really love the old stuff, huh? The voice sounds black (or wait, is it "urban" now?). Lovely, but not my cup of tea.

#21 - A live recording. Shit, I've heard this before. Some 80s track, I suppose? Sweet bass, annoying synthesizer melody work.

#22 - Uh, hair rock, get out your cocks. Sounds like a million albums my father listens to.

All in all this was very nice, it's playing for the third time in a row now and still not boring - and it's already our new toilet music.
You could very well be female and/or over 37. And I can't wait to check out some of the bands I didn't recognize.

Thank you very, very much.

11 cody chesnutt - daddys baby
12 broken social scene - frightening lives
13 why? - the vowels pt 2
14 cex - hamilton

You could very well be female and/or over 37. And I can't wait to check out some of the bands I didn't recognize.

Thank you very, very much.

Yeah, I made this mix.

Tracklist:
01. Air - Mike Mills
I have always liked this song and wanted to start it with something low key.

02. ABBA - Take a Chance On Me
I actually did not put this in there as a joke and really like ABBA. Not enough to go see Mama Mia, but enough. I have always liked how it starts.

03. Joe Jackson - One More Time
He is so underrated!

04. The Kinks - Skin and Bone
I am just starting to get into them but have grown attached to this album quite quickly.

05. Pearl Jam - Smile
This is on No Code (the first Pearl Jam album I bought) and while it's not my favorite, I really like this song.

06. The Replacements - Anadrogynous
Crash Test Dummies? Huh.

07. Mary Gauthier - Before You Leave
I have never met anybody else who likes her. Most of her songs she is sort of doing that talking-singing thing but this one really shows how nice her voice is. I pimped this a bit in the YSI thread a while ago but never heard anybody mention liking it.

08. French Kicks - Said So What
Good song from a good album.

09. Jackson 5 - I Want You Back
I put this song in a lot of mixes because I think it is impossible to dislike. Also, it seemed to fit alright so I thought what the hell.

10. The Black Angels - Bloodhounds on My Trail
They do sound older than they are, don't they? I didn't know if you would like it so I didn't put one of their longer ones on there.

11. Frank Black - The Swimmer
:)

12. Shugo Takumaru - The Mop
Somebody stuck this on a mix for me a while back and I ended up listening to it three or four times in a row before continuing. Just a nice, sweet sounding little song.

13. The Pretty Things - Summer Time
This is from 1970, I think. Great album by a band that way more people should know about.

14. Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova - You Ain't Goin' Nowhere
I knew you liked The Frames a lot and hoped you would not have heard this yet.

15. Ours - Sometimes
I can't speak for their other albums, but the one this song is from is pretty good.

16. The Zombies - This Will Be Our Year
I have a soft spot for this band. Another band I think got shorted when it comes to being recognized.

17. Camera Obscura - Super Trouper
Yeah, it is an ABBA cover but I like how it is much different from the original and does not sound that far off from this band's usual stuff. Blends right in. I think this is a b-side.

18. Do Make Say Think - In Mind
I like how the tension grows, too. It came up on shuffle and I needed something else to put on here that wasn't my usual.

19. Cat Power - She's Got You
I do not care much for this album but I like this version of the song and I needed another sad-ish sounding song.

20. Sam Cooke - That's Where It's At
The lyrics in this song kill me. "Just stay one minute more..."

21. Talking Heads - This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)
I stick this on a lot of mixes also because it's fucking awesome.

22. Spinal Tap - Sex Farm
Every line in this song is a sexual euphemism and I love how corny it is. I was going to leave it off but I always seem to end mixes with sad songs so I thought this would be a nice change.

The last song I put in as a joke. I was trying to think of a funny way to end it. Like most of their songs, I think the lyrics are hilarious. Glad that worked out so well. I'm only 27! I do love a lot of older music though, obviously. I'm happy you seemed to like most of it.

Review:

1. Playful piano piece, something quite sinister about it. I could imagine this being off a soundtrack to a film or something. Works as an intro. Infact Im sure I have seen whatever this is off but can't place it.

2. Bluesy Jazz, not really my kind of thing at all. I can appreciate the relaxed mood, but its more background music for some dark smoky hall than something I would sit and concentrate on listening to.

3. Another instrumental. Nice bluesy/jazzy jam, got some good variety in this from all instruments. I like this though again not what I would generally listen to.

4. Back to a more laid back jazz song. Saxophone is quite poignant on this for most of it, nice and smooth with that piano and whispering snare\symbol. Quite a long one this, 14 minutes infact, without the infusion of something more dramatic or experimental it does begin to try my patience.

5. Interesting song, vocals are pretty crazy. Like some folk/punk song or something. Yeah this is cool, quite diverse.

6. Pretty simple folk/rock song. Alright, the vocalist reminds me of someone but I can't seem to remember who.

7. Lou Reed. This is ok, I got one of this guys albums and its pretty good, should listen to more of his stuff really.

8. Ah Love, I got this album. I've only listened to it a few times but I really like it. Nice song, quite pleasant hippie rock with a darker edge. I really gotta get into these guys more.

9. Quite odd this. Story over swingy instrumental. Not bad, quite eccentric, I like stream of conciousness lyrics, interesting.

10. Mercury Rev. You know, I haven't listened to this album in a while and this song is really quite good. The strange fairytale start that bursts into that grandiose rock with strange background sounds, then melts down again to slowly burn out, love that little piano part and wailing at the end. Great atmosphere track.

11. So on the tag it still had Jarvis Cocker as part of the ensemble of artists and I was pretty much dreading it. But hmm, this was immediately quite dark, maybe it's just the music but the lyrics seemed kind of sinister. Not bad, Cockers voice is pretty good here to.

12. This is nice and dark. The vocals sound straight out of the 60s, but I couldn't really say when this came out, sounds more 70-80s. This is good, would be interested to hear more of this guy.

All in all, a good listen. Most of it wasn't really my thing but that doesn't really matter, I like getting a slice of someone elses taste, different perspectives and all that. Thanks a lot.

also can the deuce upload your mix? almost every track on that id like to hear. i didnt know liam lynch had an album besides fake songs.

he actually has quite a few.

Eel, We're All-Nighters, and How To Be A Satellite are his three completely serious albums (except for the last one, which has a couple borderline songs). I highly recommend all 3. they're hard to find though.

History Of America? and Camp Sunny Side Up are two comedy/music albums he did with Matt Crocco, who Liam also worked on the Sifl And Olly Show. i didn't really care for these two.

i haven't heard his latest three (Songs From Lynchland, More Songs From Lynchland, and Get Up On The Raft). i think that at least the first two are half serious, half funny (more or less) and are culled from songs he's played on his Lynchland podcast (liamlynch.net). i assume the third one would be the same, but i'd be much happier to hear that it's actually the real follow-up to How To Be A Satellite.

sorry if i rambled a bit, but i feel that Liam Lynch is one of the most under-rated, over-looked artists making music these days. i couldn't even get a bite in the upload thread for Eel or any of his newer albums and all kind of "underground"/"hard to find" shit pops up in there.

my review. well first off, a bit a the tracks weren't untagged, just as a side note.

track - guitar seemed kinda sloppy. a bit droning. the vocals were good.

track 1 - catchy guitar, reserved vocals, kinda reminds me of puddle of mudd for some reason. i like this one.

track 2 - fast song with a crunchy riff. vocals were decent enough. the drumming was a bit bland. another good one.

track 3 - an early favorite in the mix. a tight little song, reminds me a bit of tegan and sara (which is a good thing ) i'd like to hear more from this band.

track 4 - painfully obvious a jack white song. its a pretty little song, nice layering with some faint piano in the background. acoustic guitars are like my kryptonite.

track 5 - another fast paced song, the beeping or what not was bit distracting but it seemed to work. felt like the song could have been a bit more dynamic. not a bad one overall.

track 6 - ah, eagles of death metal. nice gritty guitar, silly lyrics, josh homme on the drums. you just can't go wrong.

track 7 - mmm acoustic guitar + plus eccentric vocals = sex. another fav from the mix. id def look more into this artist.

track 8 - some stoner rock. the kind of song you can put on in the dark and just drift away. nice guitar work, vocals are a good fit. another winner.

track 9 - vocals remind me frank black. goofy little song, not much to it though once the novelty wears off. interested to hear what their other stuff sounds like.

track 10 - quick song about hating someones guts. just long enough to get your attention and just as you get tired of it it is over. pretty generic feel to the song, i feel like i heard it before (even though i haven't).

track 11 - a nice live version of an irish oldie. i have a bit of a bias since i am irish, but i like this song a lot. there's a brief moment at the end where the banjo kinda rocks out which was cool

track 12 - probably my fav on the entire mix. reminds me of mellowgold beck with a little eels mixed in. droning beats, weird stuff going on in the background, vocals going on about god knows what. everything is there :)

track 13 - got an actual oldie. sounds like maybe dylan? im not sure. interesting twist after the song before it. i like the harmonies in the vocals.

track 14 - reminds me of zwan's cover of number of the beast. could have used a little variation. after about a minute or so i got kinda bored. the trumpet seemed kind of unnecessary.

track 16 - seems like we skipped 15 somehow. i like this one. fast paced vocals (almost scatting), the guitar is all over the place - just when you think he's gunna make a mistake he just bends it and makes it sound awesome.

track 17 - very 80's. i can almost imagine it in a john hughes movie. when it got the chorus i recognized it from a live version XYU by SP. nice to hear what he was talking. a bit on the long side. i agree with the chorus.

I'm so sorry the tracks weren't all untagged. I uploaded my mix, sent the link, and then realized that I had messed up. I hope it didn't ruin much for you. Even if it did, thanks for giving it all a listen.

SO:
00: The Husbands, feat. Dan Sartain, "Much Too Late"
I LOVE DAN SARTAIN. I think he's a total badass.
01: Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, "666 Conducer"
02: Death From Above 1979, "Romantic Rights"
03: The Comas, "Come My Sunshine"
04: The Raconteurs, "Carolina Drama"
I like the new Raconteurs album, and I included this one because I lived in South Carolina at one point. Total bias.
05: Bang! Bang!, "Prefab Nation"
06: Eagles of Death Metal, "Keep Your Head Up"
This band is such a guilty pleasure of mine. Love 'em.
07: Oh No! Oh My!, "Farewell to All My Friends"
One of my new favorite bands, along with Illinois.
08: The Greenhornes, "Stay Away Girl"
09: Murder City Devils, "Boom Swagger Boom"
It's catchy.
10: The Queers, "I Hate Your Fucking Guts"
11: The Dubliners, "Whiskey In The Jar [live]"
Same as #9, it's catchy.
12: Illinois, "Nosebleed"
I've only heard six or seven songs by them, but I love what I've heard.
13: The Velvet Underground, "Beginning to See The Light"
14: Dan Sartain, "Got That Feeling"
Again, I love Dan Sartain.
15: Blind Willie McTell, "Your Southern Can Is Mine"
(there was no skipping of 15, just a mess up with the numbering)
Great song.
16: Romeo Void, "Never Say Never"

Review:

1. Good intro, like this a lot. Heady and atmospheric, big drums. Like the keyboards and talky sounds and strings.
2. Pretty cool intro. Again very atmospheric, and I like the toms on this. Sounds like something that will have some massive guitar sounds later on. Pretty cool once it kicks in, some of the laser-y sounding guitars remind me of SP. The whole vibe of this is pretty sweet but the vocals could be a bit more interesting.
3. Johnny Cash, he stopped loving her today. This is one of my all-time favorite songs and Johnny does fine with it. I've known this song for most of my life but just a little while ago I realized I didn't even know what it was about. You know, like - he's dead. He stopped loving her today. Get it, eh? I wish this song had another verse or something but I guess there's beauty in the simplicity.
4. Oh! I know this one, too. I don't want to cheat and look up what it is. The man in the long black coat, I know. I like this one a lot, the vocal is fantastic and the organ in the back is awesome and the little percussion touches. So good.
5. This is pretty cool, very 90's clean guitar. I definitely do not know this one. Weird vocals. Stilted but not bad or anything. A little slow to really get into for me but ok I guess.
6. This is tagged as Pete Yorn but I would have recognized the voice anyway. Holy shit, Suspicious Minds. Acoustic guitar. Accordion. This is truly great, I love non-gimmicky covers like this that really make something cool of the song but not in a way that's trying to be weird or ironic or unsuspected. I am not huge into Pete Yorn as an album artist but taken like this, this is awesome. Good steel guitar, too. Much appreciated.
7. More guitar picking. Pretty electric line over top. Like it already. I recognize this voice but I don't know who it is. I think I recognize it. I immediately like this and this is the first song I don't know where the lyrics have really grabbed me immediately too. I like the pretty chorus of females in the background, reminds me of Leonard Cohen. I like this a lot but I'm not blown away by it. Still something I would very much listen to if I had found it myself.

Ok I'm going to class. I'll try to finish tonight depending on when I get home.

I’m not very good at the song by song review thing but I’ll give it a go.

1. Mmmm, lush. Gorecki style strings with string plucking. A mix opening after my own heart.

2. Flows nicely into the next track. Nice overall sound but nothing that really grabs me in this one.

3. Good old Zwan version of Number of the beast. Nice choice here. Continues the vibe nicely. Always liked this but haven’t heard it in ages.

4. Can’t place who this is. Quite like this; simple and haunting.

5. Stepping things up a gear with some percussion. I like the simple, insistent riff and vocals.

6. Eels. I’ve been meaning to explore their albums for a while now but never got round to it. Love the intimacy of his voice and the simplicity of the songwriting with heartfelt lyrics.

7. Great production, heavily orchestrated, 70’s sounding, intricate arrangement. I feel like a complete loser for not knowing if this is the Beach Boys or not.

8. Quality solo cello piece. Cool.

9. Very pretty and mellow tune. This is right up my alley.

10. Not really feeling this one for some reason.

11. Same kind of vibe as 9 except with some lovely production touches. Loving this. Wanna hear more of this guy.

12. Wow, quite unusual. The music is like the kind of stuff I’d mess about playing for hours when I first got my POD effects unit. Except this manages to not be awful.

13. Holy fucking cocking jesus christ but this song is beautiful. The vocal is mesmerizing. The lyrics are perfection. Total hairs on the back of the neck stuff. I seriously want to thank you for letting me hear this. I need to hear more of this guy immediately. I keep listening to this song over and over.

14. A little too slick and poppy for my tastes.

15. Sweet. Cool rhythms. Wouldn’t mind checking out more from these guys.

16. Unsure about this one. Like the way the production, not sure about the song.

17. Ah, some classic heartfelt Tom Waits. This put a smile on my face.

18. Ha, cheesy mix ending. Nice.

It’s obvious a lot of thought and effort went into this mix. Love the overall vibe you went for, wonderfully subdued and lush. May not have loved every song but there’s a lot on here I’ll come back to especially track 13. Thanks.

Here's my review.

1 - Decent opener. Slow and banjo oriented. Sounds like it was recorded in a garage though. Also the female singer has a good voice. The guy sounds like he's trying to do a Tom Waits/Crash Test Dummies impression.
2 - Country Folk song that sounds like it's from the 40's. Interesting, but not something I'd put in rotation.
3 - More country? Violins and harmonicas and twangy guitars. Not my style.
4 - I can't hardly understand the lyrics or the singer. An acoustic guitar. It's... slow.
5 - Wow, violins again? They sound synthetic though. The chick has a hot voice and sounds british. The first half of the song is decent, but thesecond half sounds like postal service played backwards.
6 - The mix is really bad on this track, can hardly hear the singer. However, the best song so far. Could really have benefitted from better production values. And I'm not talking a fancy studio, I just mean someone who knew how to mix.
7 - Imagine if Radiohead and the Cure had a baby, and it was retarded.
8 - Punky, kind of a Misfits sound to them, oddly, if Glen Danzig were a chick. I liked.
9 - Again with the violins. Not bad, but they sound like a local band that will remain a local band. I don't see anything noteworthy here.
10 - Decent instrumental, but could have been better i think with some lyrics. And I'm a fan of instrumentals.
11 - I can hardly hear this song. It sounds like it was recorded from the next room or someone outside a soundcheck. is this an MIA cover? Which is a lot better than the MIA version.
12 - Oh, Kings of Leon. I recognize this one. Not bad. Good choice.
13 - Disjointed all over the place rock song. The singer makes me want to kill myself, and not in a good way. This song gives me diarrhea.
14 - This is some kind of rap. I'm going to bet it's one of the new popular artists, because the guy has nothing substantial to say and just barely rhymes words and has no flow. Whoever this rapper is I hope the Biggie killer gets him too.
15 - Sounds kinda like 80's retro synth pop. Interesting. I'd like to know more.
16 - Singer who tries to make a scary voice and be all spooky. The instrumental parts are ok, but I just can't get past the vocals. Would be a lot better if singer didn't try to act all spooooky. He sounds like Korn in a reverb overlay recorded while Jonathan Davis is taking a shit.
17 - Sounds like a song that may be sung in a sing along by muppets. It's not bad, and I like the overlay in the singalong style. I don't think I'd want to hear a whole album in a row by this group though. I dunno. But it's poppy and makes me think of muppets, which is good.
18 - Cute voice, I like the melody and how it's a girl singing from an old man's perspective. It's nice, but fairly dervitive of the "fenale singer with piano" motif. But a decent effort.

Update: There are still two outstanding mixes, and one of those two people has contacted me with intent to finish soon. Considering how things went last time, I think that's pretty good. Hopefully the lone hold out will contact me soon as I have TOTALLY SEEN HIM / HER AROUND THE BOARD SO IT'S NOT LIKE HE / SHE FELL OFF THE FACE OF THE EARTH OR SOMETHING. Ahem.

Also, thanks to everybody who has taken the time to post a review of their mix. It was a chore to remind people to do that last time so it was a relief that most of you have gotten feedback and that most is pretty positive.
