They're famous enough to always be on the radar when 12 year olds discover blunt emotion and the notion of being a credible alternative artist. They then have enough depth in their catalogue and class in the way they conduct themselves that you dont have to disown them like SP or whatever.

good answer. my problem is if it was any other band and if i hadn't been into them when i was twelve i would probably detest them. i detest the red hot chili peppers, so why not these guys? i guess like you say, they sort of kept their credibility as people.

i liked their singles a bit when i was small, checked out some of their 90s/00s output but was never a fan

then all of a sudden i realised that half their material was really old and that there were albums before green

listened to carnival of sorts

was sold

Murmur, Lifes Rich Pageant, and Hi-Fi are all amazing.

Anything post-HiFi is fucking horrible.

i can't really think of a band much cooler than murmur era r.e.m. I mean just the way they look and make music and spasm around and stuff.

UP is probably the album I listen to most, followed by the early albums. Even Around the SUn is growing on me

constructive as ever celluloid_love.

This week I have mainly been listening to New Adventures in Hi-fi. I'm not really liking Accelerate that much however, it feels slightly forced.

I could never get into them.

That song/vid reminds me of Sting and the Police.

REM's always been that band i respected, enjoyed a handful of their songs, but accepted that id never really get into them

they were incredible live, though.

I heard everything from them in my mom's car. She was a big fan. When I hear it I think of the smell of vomit and the awful rainy day feel and I just can't get into it

one reason i like rem are those hooks with like 5 melodies going on simultaneously, like fall on me or harborcoat

and then murmur with its combination of really reverby sounds and really dry sounding shit

none of this could really be done live

I generally enjoy Out of Time way more than I probably should.

As for getting into them, I just always liked his voice and the first album of theirs I bought was Automatic For the People. Needless to say, after that I was hooked.
