It was 102 or something in 2005. Last year had one pretty brutal day, too. redbull 07-24-2008, 03:36 PM It was 102 or something in 2005. Last year had one pretty brutal day, too. it was 110 or so with the heat index, and dinosaur jr. and arcade fire rocked my face but, i'm not going this year. fuck lollapalooza. McCollum 07-24-2008, 03:58 PM I'll be there all three days. bja1288 07-24-2008, 04:08 PM i'll be there friday davin 07-24-2008, 10:59 PM i'll be there all 3 days. i think i know like over 20 people going this year, not including you sissies. :) should be fun. without camping and with all the cleanup they do all day and overnight, and the stuff you're allowed to bring in, i think lolla is a pretty low-impact festival. even getting back an forth is a cinch, even multiple times within a day if necessary. it ain't like reading or bonnaroo, where you're on another planet 24hrs a day. KrazeeStacee 07-25-2008, 03:46 PM . KrazeeStacee 07-25-2008, 03:47 PM BTW - the weather hasn't been so bad here lately. We've had some 90 days, but nothing like the years before. Everyone's been commenting how it's been so mild this year, even the humidity - I can only think of maybe 5 days total where I was miserable...and I don't have A/C in my vehicle so I definitely feel it when it's miserable outside. I'm still bummed I won't be going as all systems were go until the rest of my shit blew up. FUCK Pizza Club 07-28-2008, 12:05 PM I will be there all 3 days as well. Last year, there was this dude in Asheville that we were next to up front, on the barrier. Later that summer, me and the girlfriend were sitting in the shade and she's like "Isn't that the guy from Asheville?" and it was. I guess there's a small chance that I will unknowingly meet one of you between this weekend/Davenport/Hammond. Caine Walker 07-28-2008, 12:14 PM who are you planning on seeing this weekend? Pizza Club 07-28-2008, 02:11 PM I'm not entirely sure who I'm seeing yet. Besides the headliners, there's no one I have my heart set on. Friday will probably be something like this: Bang Camaro (if I'm there in time) Holy Fuck The Go! Team/Jeff Tweedy Black Keys Cat Power Raconteurs Radiohead Saturday: Perry I guess? EITS BSS Toadies RATM Sunday: The girlfriend will probably want to see G Love Blues Traveler (guilty pleasure, they are great live.) Mark Ronson NIN I'm pretty much open the entire weekend, especially Saturday. pale blue eyes 07-28-2008, 02:48 PM I'll have to look when I get home. I know there are a couple of hard choices to make (Wilco vs. Rage, Toadies vs. Sharon Jones) but we'll see. It might just come down to which stage is a shorter walk. spring 07-28-2008, 02:53 PM yeah, i still have to decide on some things, but for sure i want to see: friday: k'naan black lips the kills gogol borello cat power bloc party malkmus radiohead saturday: devotchka eits lupe fiasco sharon jones / toadies rage / wilco sunday: the weakerthans black kids love and rockets the national nin / kanye Esty 07-28-2008, 03:00 PM Shit, Springs going to be there. Ugh, stupid work.:cry: McCollum 07-28-2008, 03:08 PM At the moment this is what i've got planned. Some may change but not by much. Day1 Holy Fuck Go! Team/The Kills Black Keys/Gogol Bordello Grizzly Bear Raconteurs Radiohead Day2 Mason Jennings MGMT Okkervil River Broken Social Scene Toadies Rage Against The Machine Day 3 Iron & Wine Flogging Molly Gnarls Barkley The National Nine Inch Nails pale blue eyes 07-28-2008, 03:10 PM I definitely want to see Jeff Tweedy on the Kids' stage but I don't remember who he was playing against. Patti Smith was pretty awesome there last year. AndySlash 07-28-2008, 03:18 PM Jim James doing Rainbow Connection was better. And as if there is a Toadies/Sharon Jones debate. Sharon Jones all the way. pale blue eyes 07-28-2008, 07:37 PM Yeah, I thought he was pretty good on the Kids' stage also. Really nice voice. Sharon Jones is awesome but I have always had a soft spot for the Toadies. Seems like they might put on a good show. I wish I had not been a wuss and seen them here, it would have made things a lot easier. redbull 07-28-2008, 07:46 PM i thought sharon jones was kinda boring at bonnaroo AndySlash 07-28-2008, 07:48 PM you were just tired, I'm sure. redbull 07-28-2008, 07:51 PM she played at like one in the afternoon and i was on the rail what are you talking about AndySlash 07-28-2008, 07:53 PM i was just voicing my disapproval of your statement with a made up excuse. redbull 07-28-2008, 07:55 PM oh ok then in that case i didn't see pearl jam AndySlash 07-28-2008, 07:56 PM they sucked. redbull 07-28-2008, 07:59 PM sigur ros were kind of underwhelming wish i hadn't spent 4 hours waiting in the tent for them AndySlash 07-29-2008, 12:53 PM forecast: Fri: 90, 60% humidity, 20% precip Sat: 95, 60% humidity, 20% precip Sun: 95, 60% humidity, 20% precip Pizza Club 07-29-2008, 01:24 PM forecast: Fri: 90, 60% humidity, 20% precip Sat: 95, 60% humidity, 20% precip Sun: 95, 60% humidity, 20% precip Fuckin' hell. :( edit: Amy Freeze is saying 92/91/90. I'm still expecting it to be not pleasant as the weekend of Lolla seems to be the most fuck-me-in-the-ass hottest days of the year. Between that and having my glasses fog up every time I go in or come back indoors, I'll just try to keep well hydrated and apply sunscreen more evenly than last year. I looked like Adam Ant with the random red / pale parts on my face. Still though, I hate being rained on. noyen 07-29-2008, 02:37 PM when we're all on pcp, we won't care. AndySlash 07-29-2008, 02:43 PM mmmmmmelting KrazeeStacee 07-29-2008, 03:44 PM forecast: Fri: 90, 60% humidity, 20% precip Sat: 95, 60% humidity, 20% precip Sun: 95, 60% humidity, 20% precip Yep, I was just coming in here to see if you folks heard. Looks like the weather waited for Lollapalooza to get hot and muggy...today's been pretty miserable so far and it's only what, 91? Good luck guys, bring lots of water and a big floppy hat. (PS I heard there's a much higher chance of rain for Sunday btw) wHATcOLOR 07-29-2008, 03:47 PM i'll be there friday and saturday Caine Walker 07-29-2008, 03:58 PM liar. pale blue eyes 07-29-2008, 04:07 PM Oh, in case I was not clear I will be there all three days. Eulogy 07-29-2008, 04:10 PM yeah, i couldn't really complain when it was supposed to be 82/83. now i can. whatever, it'll still be awesome. pale blue eyes 07-29-2008, 04:17 PM Yeah, I'd rather get sunburned or rained on any day rather than be at work. Six more hours and I don't have to be back for a week. That itself is exciting right now. Eulogy 07-29-2008, 04:26 PM yeah all i have standing in between me and a FUCKING AWESOME weekend is a 20-mile trip to get my emissions test. Esty 07-29-2008, 04:39 PM naked-palooza? You guys better take pics if this happens. Caine Walker 07-31-2008, 09:25 AM weather update: friday, saturday: mid/high eighties. possible thunderstorms on friday; saturday is all clear. sunday: low/mid nineties. fucking hot. Caine Walker 07-31-2008, 12:14 PM i know that someone mentioned that Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings were boring, but i am really excited to see them play. anyone? KrazeeStacee 07-31-2008, 02:29 PM Apparently Obama's gonna stop by. My Mom said they mentioned it on the news this morning. Eulogy 07-31-2008, 02:49 PM But as far as Farrell knows, none of the tens of thousands of people who'll be there to watch Radiohead, Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine and hometown favorite Kanye West perform will be named Barack Obama. http://www.mtv.com/news/articles/1591830/20080730/west_kanye.jhtml Eulogy 07-31-2008, 02:50 PM i guess it's still a possibility though. avsfan7733 07-31-2008, 07:55 PM i'm goin. I'll be the schmuck standing at ATT all day tomorrow and saturday, wearing a penguins eastern conference champs shirt or possibly a "wendy's napkin yellow" ted drewes shirt. Say hi. BlissedandGone2 08-02-2008, 03:06 AM radiohead was pretty great, but im sad they didn't play overtime. ill be there tomorrow if anyone wants to say hi. Eulogy 08-02-2008, 10:10 AM radiohead was pretty great understatement of the century BlissedandGone2 08-02-2008, 10:19 AM understatement of the century ok, it was overwhelmingly amazing, but i dont like telling myself that because now i feel stupid for going to the rest of lollapalooza. im excited for dr. dog and iron and wine though. and obama. Rickpat12 08-02-2008, 01:06 PM radiohead was pretty great, but im sad they didn't play overtime. ill be there tomorrow if anyone wants to say hi. understatement of the century setlist please? Rickpat12 08-02-2008, 03:03 PM yeah nevermind, simple google search was all that was needed. redbull 08-03-2008, 02:07 AM so I hope none of you got crushed to death at RATM bits 08-03-2008, 05:35 AM i was maybe going to see spring and nawyen after the whole spectacle but they never responded my last text and OH MY GOD NOW WHAT :erm: but really that's sad. it'd be neat if some massive aggromosh broke out or something a bit more creative burst as opposed to people just gravitating towards a performance like it's god and getting winded and bloody in the process. Caine Walker 08-04-2008, 01:40 PM overall impressions, by day: friday - by far the hottest day. so hot that allison mosshart from the kills almost didn't make it through the set. i enjoy the kills so i liked their performance, but it wasn't anything to go nuts over. i mostly liked how the songs were narrative of the actual interaction between the two as they were struggling to fight heat exhaustion, but that seemed to be lost on a lot of people. after their set, we loaded up on beer and food and tried to find a good spot for radiohead. we waited through bloc party in the shade near the portapotties, which i thought was kinda funny because it sums up how i personally feel about them. anyway, radiohead, radiohead, radiohead. pitchfork poo-pooed all over this set, mostly because of the crowd, but i thoroughly enjoyed their performance. sure, it probably wasn't their best, their weren't any major jaw-droppers, but the light show was neat, the fireworks timed out perfectly during everything in its right place and fake plastic trees, and no surprises was a highlight for me. when the show was over, i left feeling completely satisfied and absolutely fucking exhausted. saturday - we caught the very end of foals as we were on our way over to see mgmt. they were pretty decent, straight forward, power dance rock. i had no real feelings about them beforehand, so it was good to know that they're alright. when they were done, we left that to get a spot for what none of us expected - a GIANT crowd for mgmt. what the fuck? i mean, their latest album is pretty good, but i had no idea they had that large of a following/flavor of the month appeal. they were ok. i was really pretty bored most of the time, and was starting to wish we had to just gone to the dj tent. i didn't know it was going to be 70's throwback, mildly psychadelic, classic rock hybrid piles of meh. others seemed to enjoy it, so to each his and her own, but we ended up leaving before they were done to go get food. about that for a second: i really feel like the food/beverages weren't such a shocker this year. there weren't too many things that were over $5, and it was actually pretty tasty. but i digress... we made out way over to explosions to catch the end of a pretty powerful performance. there's just something about three guys banging away on guitars in unison that gets me going. even though they're really getting to the end of the rope with any sort of innovation with this genre of music, it was done very well. we waited out the crowd for broken social scene, which proved to be worth every excrutiating moment. i don't recall ever being surrounded by that many obnoxious people. we're talking chants of "broken social scene" in 5/4 type obnoxious. guh. anyway, they were really just on fire that day. not one dull second, and i was left feeling the same level of satisfaction i got from the radiohead set. i hopped over to sharon jones and her dap kings for a few songs, and was very very happy that i did. goddayum, can they play! for one song, she brought someone up on stage and sang to him, and for the next one, the crowd got really into the audience participation. looking back, i really wish i had stayed longer. none of us were jumping out of our skin for the rage set, but we tried to get up as close as we could without getting to the point of standing on top of people. somehow, we ended up between two of the projection speakers giving us probably the worse sound in the park. the volume wasn't loud enough, the vocals were too high in the mix, and i was just not impressed at all. when they stopped playing to get people to calm the fuck down, it really brought all of our interest levels past the breaking point and we left during the second call for settling down. i think my biggest problem with rage against the machine might be their fans. i amquite aware of the fact that their music has become more about *release* than the actual message contained within, but it really fucking bothered me to see a bunch of otherwise apathetic fuckwits shouting revolution shouts when they will never in their entire fucking lives ever be faced with oppression beyond scrounging up enough money to get another 30 pack of the beast. i really don't know if i can ever listen to this band again and take it seriously. sunday - by the time sunday rolled around, we were all dragging ass. trying to get my friends to get the fuck out of the door seemed like a chore in and of itself, but when we finally did get moving, our first stop ended up being the dj area. it was a ridiculous sausage fest of 90's dance tunes mixed just a little harder to get bro-hams going, and we didn't stay there for very long. we wandered over to the paperboy and the true loves, and hung out with the thirtysomething crowd for a while. more food, more drinks, then we went over to get a spot for love and rockets. i had absolutely no idea what to expect for these guys, but it didn't involve feeling the bass in the core of my body for an hour straight. when they were done, i was just so happy that i wasn't being pounded by low end sonics, and i really can't even tell you if they were any good. i also didn't really care that much. if they had played the one song that i knew, then my interest might have spiked a bit. while waiting for nine inch nails to go on, i attempted to make friends with the people around me, but there was a trio to my back who wanted to do nothing but HATE me. i didn't even do anything, so when i asked one of the girls about radiohead, she gave me that awful goth stare. you know, that one where if they could bore into your forehead with their eyes, they would. however, i just stared right back at her for a good five-ten seconds of intense stare off and broke it by asking "why do you hate me so much? i didn't even do anything to you." she looked confused for a second and told me that it was her friends who were being "the negative couple." whatever. i asked her about radiohead again, she actually talked about it for a second, and that was that. the real kicker about this is that they were all in their 30's. fucking sad. when nails finally came on, the crowd was pretty worked up and ready to take some frustration out on each other. and that they did. march of the pigs was fairly violent, closer ended up being more like a dark dance party than anything, and head like a hole was probably the most intense part of the whole show (in the pit anyway). the stuff from ghosts was alright, but i'm thinking it's pretty uninteresting to probably 80% of people who will ever see trent & co. live. the light show was fucking phenomenal and really added to the energy of the show. there were other good things, but this whole thing is really fucking long and i should be trying to get caught up rather than churning out a lollapalooza review. i am absolutely worn out, but goddamn, it was a pretty good weekend. Esty 08-04-2008, 01:47 PM Who is "we" in your story? Any cool pics? Caine Walker 08-04-2008, 01:50 PM we = me, eulogy, my friend lauren and my friend joe. sadly, not many pictures. chris got some, but i don't know how well they turned out. Eulogy 08-04-2008, 03:37 PM i'm really tired. radiohead and nin were great. I was like ..5 or 6 "rows" back, on the right side of the stage. I had a white, pittsburgh penguins shirt on. I was there since 2.. and it fucking sucked. Almost all the people around me were assholes and insisted on trying to squeeze farther up in the crowd, making the already hot, sticking, and sweaty bodies get closer together. By the time the first set was over I was hoping they'd finish just cause I was miserable. On saturday I stumbled into the LittleBigPlanet booth and won VIP lollalounge passes for saturday and got to spend the day drinking free beer and catered food, it was amazing. I thought rage played terrifically. I almost got crushed when they started, but I moved back so I wouldn't die. Day 3 was pretty boring, got to see Perry play with Slash on the kids stage, Gnarles Barkley cover Reckoner, and Obama not show up for Kanye. NIN was pretty good, but instrumentals simply don't translate well for them in a festival setting. bja1288 08-04-2008, 08:46 PM i was probably around you!! Was that anyone here? pale blue eyes 08-04-2008, 11:45 PM Once when I was walking from one stage to another, some radio station tent (XRT?) starting playing "Bullet with Butterfly Wings" and I said to my companion, "HEY! It's that rat in a cage song!" and I saw at least two heads whip around. It was nice. Pizza Club 08-05-2008, 09:58 AM NIN was pretty good, but instrumentals simply don't translate well for them in a festival setting. Oh God, I was really excited for NIN too. My girlfriend found a good spot on the hill in the south field where we could see both stages, so we decided just to stay there for the last half of the day. We figured that Obama would come out before Kanye, say what he had to say, and we could catch most of NIN. Well Barack never came out, so we went to NIN and I must have caught the part of the setlist where they played mostly Ghosts....but it was terrible. So we went back to Kanye, who wasn't that great either. I 100% regret my decision to ditch NIN, but hindsight is 20/20. Eulogy 08-05-2008, 10:14 AM i had no qualms with NIN's setlist. the instrumentals were good and gave me a bit of a break from the....whatever it was. i mean i would have liked to have heard reptile or something. and the great destroyer. and a bunch of other shit, but whatever. Caine Walker 08-05-2008, 10:15 AM i can't believe that any of you actually thought that barack obama was going to come out and speak. bits 08-05-2008, 10:18 AM BUT THE TV SAID SO! Caine Walker 08-05-2008, 10:20 AM hey, did anyone try to do the scavenger hunt thing? Pizza Club 08-05-2008, 11:13 AM i can't believe that any of you actually thought that barack obama was going to come out and speak. G. Love and Mark Ronson both said he would. I think it was in the program too I think, as well as the Official Obama Store and the Mr. November tshirt in the Sunday part of the merch stand. It was definitely more than a "will he or won't he" type feeling Sunday. Caine Walker 08-05-2008, 11:19 AM hype and merchandise, great. i still don't think he was ever actually planning to be there. davin 08-05-2008, 03:51 PM Did you go to Rothbury? yes!! sorry i haven't posted about it...i was outta town again on vacation immediately afterwards, then off to a new job. I bought a ticket from someone who couldn't go, for halfprice...which worked out great for me becase i could only go the 4th and 5th (camped for two nights with some friends of mine in their trailer-sized tent). it was fucking great. those are the best fest grounds ever (like lolla in chicago, its truly unique)! the forest area was probably the best of all, with all the random interactive art and hammocks and shit (there was even a "secret stage" in there). there was so much to look at and play around with and do outside of the music, which added an interesting element to the whole experience. i liked the whole wickerman/bamboo theme they had goiing... overall very well run for the 1st year, thoughj i could see them slightly changign the layout of some things. i saw snoop, 311, of montreal, primus, secret machines, gomez, black keys...and a bunch of the late night stuff including crystal method. i left sunday morning and was back in chicago by lunch time. Primus was definitely the highlight for me (other than the crowd), and i'm also glad Secret Machines didn't suck (with the lineup changes, i had my doubts). the only pain in the ass was where i had to park getting in late. since i wasn't camping on my own and was meeting up with others, i ended up in a shitty parkign spot and it took me FOREVER to get in and get back to it. i was kinda on my own since they weren't accommodating single day parkign or anything like that. Did you guys go Staceee? I would love to go back for the whole fest next time, dependin on line-up of course. i saw more entrepneural activities in the camp ground than bonnaroo last year. ;) davin 08-05-2008, 03:53 PM so I hope none of you got crushed to death at RATM it wasn't even as bad as they made it out to be. it was mostly just a surprise push forward by late arrivers than anythign else, that caused the congestion up front. the crowd itself wasn't very wild at all...it was just tight. ------- speakign of big push forward, for radiohead is it true they lifted up the railinings and moved it forward 10-12ft at the l.ast moment for everyone to get closer? i was at the sound booth before the big rush forward, so i couldn't see what caused it. anyone? davin 08-05-2008, 03:58 PM since text messages don't seem to be very reliable :( sprint was 100% solid all weekend. verizon was good too. the irony is that at&t was the worst, with the biggest (sometimes multi-hour) delays in receiving txt messages, and they were the big telecom sponsor! haha...idiots. all my at&t buddies got very lates txts. my one buddy got "arrivding at Battles" after Rage was over. lol. bja1288 08-05-2008, 04:05 PM it wasn't even as bad as they made it out to be. it was mostly just a surprise push forward by late arrivers than anythign else, that caused the congestion up front. the crowd itself wasn't very wild at all...it was just tight. ------- speakign of big push forward, for radiohead is it true they lifted up the railinings and moved it forward 10-12ft at the l.ast moment for everyone to get closer? i was at the sound booth before the big rush forward, so i couldn't see what caused it. anyone? sounds like a good explanation, because i saw tons of people rush forward and i thought that they had just knocked down the fence or something, but i guess they moved it? there was a moment or two there where everyone around me lunged forward and i thought we were all gonna fall down, it was fun davin 08-05-2008, 04:10 PM G. Love and Mark Ronson both said he would. I think it was in the program too I think, as well as the Official Obama Store and the Mr. November tshirt in the Sunday part of the merch stand. It was definitely more than a "will he or won't he" type feeling Sunday. therre was also rumors about him coming during wilco, because his family is friends with some of the band members' families. meanwhile....RAGE was warning us that all muslim, latino and black people would soon be rising up to take power in the US if things didn't change soon. They said Obama was a start, but the Democrats are also part of the problem, and they'er all still part of "the apparatus". i swear i saw tom morello roll his eyes on the big screens when Zach was on this rant. he wanted us to burn down the building of gov't agencies that don't work. i think i will be paying a visit to my local post office. :smoke: davin 08-05-2008, 04:15 PM sounds like a good explanation, because i saw tons of people rush forward and i thought that they had just knocked down the fence or something, but i guess they moved it? there was a moment or two there where everyone around me lunged forward and i thought we were all gonna fall down, it was fun i overheard some people saying thats what happened, but i wasn't sure. seems awfully well coordinated for those security guys. ;) and YES! It was fun & a little scary when it happened! haha...good times. Pizza Club 08-05-2008, 04:26 PM hype and merchandise, great. i still don't think he was ever actually planning to be there. Maybe not, but they hinted pretty effing hard. davin 08-05-2008, 04:35 PM for me, NIN was best of the fest. they completely out-did themselves and blew me away. if you look back, i've been critical of them the last 3 times i saw them (year zero tour in UK/Reading, twice for With Teeth tour 'round here)....because of the lack of guitar prowess, presence, and intensity. well this was a throw back to the downward spiral days. Robin Fink's guitar work during March of the Pigs, Head Like a Hole, Terrible Lie, Survivalism, and Wish was just fucking awesome. Almost featured. Its probably the best Terrible Lie i have ever heard, soooooooo good. I really really want to hear this lineup play Sin, Great Destoryer, Burn, Happiness in Slavery and Dead Souls. I hope Fink hangs around enough to influecense Trent's next body of work. Radiohead comes in a close 2nd, followed by Black Keys, Rage, Saul Williams, Booka Shade, Gutter Twins, Explosions in the Sky, Broken Social Scene, Battles, and Dr. Dog. I was somewhat disappointed by The National, Bloc Party and the Toadies. noyen 08-05-2008, 04:48 PM sprint was 100% solid all weekend. verizon was good too. the irony is that at&t was the worst, with the biggest (sometimes multi-hour) delays in receiving txt messages, and they were the big telecom sponsor! haha...idiots. all my at&t buddies got very lates txts. my one buddy got "arrivding at Battles" after Rage was over. lol. yeah, i couldnt believe how awful the att service was out there. i'd get a 3g signal, all bars on, but couldnt make a fucking call or text anyone. once i'd walk out of the park a bit i'd get a slew of txts or missed calls from the previous day. had that problem trying to reach maggie a lot but we finally got to her and met up. pale blue eyes 08-05-2008, 10:23 PM Yeah, I had the same problem. I'd have problems sending shit and then I'd get text messages hours late. Luckily it was only the one day that it seemed bad and everything worked out :) noyen 08-05-2008, 10:38 PM everyone we hung out with was super awesome and they know it :). what happens at lolla stays at lolla. that was so awesome. one of the best weekends i've had in a long long time. except for the two days of hell getting home. you guys were all unbelievably cool and i hope i wasn't too normal or too weird. but yeah. such good awesomeness in people i want to hang out more. pale blue eyes 08-05-2008, 10:46 PM  noyen 08-05-2008, 10:54 PM i wish bits could have gotten in with us. we should have done the wristband switcheroo thing and toss back over the fence :D. it wasnt too hard to get those things off pale blue eyes 08-05-2008, 10:57 PM I haven't managed to figure out how to get it off without resorting to cutting it. I'd like to keep it intact if possible. noyen 08-05-2008, 10:58 PM use soapy water! it will hurt for about 2 seconds, but it will slllide off intact :) noyen 08-05-2008, 10:59 PM i got mine off with just a bit of water though. and lots of grunting and unfing and awing pale blue eyes 08-05-2008, 11:02 PM Mine is on pretty tight so I do not anticipate this working unless my thumb is somehow removed. I'll try it though. noyen 08-05-2008, 11:10 PM you can always razor blade the plastic bit off pretty easy too... i just stuck my hand under cold water for a bit, and then just started pushing it off. mine was on pretty tight too, but it evetually worked. the orientation of the plastic bit seemed to matter. but yeah, it seemed impossible but i guess i really wanted mine intact too and i once again proved that montelds's church is true but accomplishing the impossible spring 08-06-2008, 08:43 AM i just read Caine Walker's review of the weekend and I would like to take the time to write something like that too. at least for myself. too much crap to catch up on at work though so maybe I can type it up in a text file and post it later. but just one quick thing :) i realllllllllly enjoyed meeting everyone i got to meet this weekend. you guys are awesome. pale blue eyes 08-06-2008, 09:20 AM This weekend was a whole lot of fun but I am too lazy to post more at this point. Maybe later when I'm not exhausted. I'll just say I wish it had lasted longer and going back to work today is going to suck. Thanks for the tips to get my bracelet off, it took a while but I finally got it. Shapan 08-06-2008, 09:49 AM im jealous, coachella's lineup was pretty bad this year AndySlash 08-06-2008, 10:43 AM I took a soldering iron to the plastic clasp. Alas, I still ripped the damn thing when trying to get it off my hand. Eulogy 08-06-2008, 11:40 AM i was able to wiggle it off without using anything. i guess i must not have had it on that tight. noyen 08-06-2008, 01:55 PM i have a double jointed thumb that made it easier too. ahhh, now i want to go to next years. pale blue eyes 08-06-2008, 02:09 PM With all the yanking I did trying to get that wristband off, my right thumb might be a bit closer to being double-jointed than it used to be. Hopefully I will be there next year, too. spring 08-08-2008, 01:31 PM ok, i'm doing this. it's 2pm on a friday afternoon at work and i realllly don't want to do anything else right now Friday - tried to get there for Butch Walker but we were in line to get into the park for about an hour - caught last two songs and it was okay. he's got the best stage banter, but the songs just aren't all that. i was impressed with how close you could get to the Playstation 3 stage. - met up with Ryan and Erin at the kids stage and saw Jeff Tweedy. so nice to be in the shade for a little while - Gogol Bordello at the AT&T stage - so awesome! great energy and the sound was really good. we should've stayed until the end but i wanted to see a little bit of the Black Keys set as well - walked across to the opposite end of the park to see the Black Keys at the other main stage and as soon as we got there it seemed that some of their speakers went out. :( too bad, because they sounded pretty good before, but they were too quiet now - next at the same awesome Playstation stage we went to see Cat Power who sounded wonderful. great set, beautifully chosen covers and i love it how every time i see her live, she chooses to sing her own songs differently. i think i got some good pictures of her - i should download those from my camera one of these days - went to see Bloc Party rather than the Raconteurs. and i really enjoyed their set. we were sitting on the grass, trying to save our spot for Radiohead. - stayed in the same spot, just turned around to hear Malkmus at the Myspace stage, and his set was pretty different than what I saw him play in Toronto a few weeks ago. i was too tired and sun struck to actually go closer to the stage where he was playing so i didn't get to take a close look. he did make fun about being the opening band for Radiohead though. - Radiohead. GREAT set, really nice mix of new and old stuff, but TOO FUCKING QUIET. i was pretty angry when drunk idiots around us were able to talk over the music. no surprises was a really nice surprise indeed. and the fireworks during everything in its right place, yeah! Saturday - got there early for Devotchka and got very close to the stage - 2nd row or so :) probably my favourite moment of the festival. they sounded great, wonderful energy and they played a lot of new songs i didn't know. the theremin was right in front of me :D and the singer's voice is just unbelieveable. long set, great great energy. i definitely have to post the pictures i took of them. - walked over to see Explosions in the Sky and chilled on the grass to the right of the stage where they were playing. a little quiet, but they sounded very good and looked very much into it. (as a side note, i saw the guys backstage at the Saul Williams set the next day and they were really sweet) - I've seen BSS a million times so we went to see Lupe Fiasco instead - he is SUCH an entertainer. i tried to go up close just for a bit and it was pretty funny that everyone was dancing and singing along. he's a great entertainer. - don't remember much of the Toadies - must've been the wine. - Rage was good, but again TOO QUIET. i was really wondering what was going on at the front because Zach stopped like 6 times to tell people to calm the fuck down. i found out later that apparently there was a topless chick crowd surfing and they wouldn't let her get down or soemthing like that. anyway, it was pretty cool to get into the 'chanting/screaming' and fun to see them play songs that remind me so much of high school. couldn't really hear Tom Morello :( the vocals were mixed very high. i think someone mentioned this already Sunday - we were rushing to catch the Weakerthans' set but then got a text message from Erin saying they had cancelled. that was pretty sad, because i really wanted to see them and try to talk to them afterwards. they were the one Canadian band at Lolla I really cared about :/ oh well, too bad. - got to the kids' stage just in time to see Perry Farrell and Slash and it was cool to hang out with Erin and Ryan again. couldn't really hear Slash some of the time, but I was so surprised they did play Jane Says :) Perry's stage banter was reallllly hilarious too. and the kids who were playing with them, from the 'school of rock' looked just in awe of what they were doing the whole time. probably peeing their pants too. - got to Chromeo way too late - just got to hear the last song. it was great, and i really wish we'd caught more of that set - heard that Black Kids single "you are the girl..that i've been dreaming of...ever since i was a little girl..' as we were walking towards the stage where Saul Williams was gonna play and it made me smile a lot and of course got stuck in my head for the rest of the day - Saul Williams was probably the biggest surprise - i had no idea he was going to be so good. the sound was pretty close to perfect too because we managed to get close to the stage again. i think Brian said it already, but yeah, you can totally see Trent's influence. i also thought that the set was very varied and i just really enjoyed it. took some 'stalker' pictures of the EITS guys backstage - our friends had already found a really good spot for NIN so we went over to the Bud Light Stage to see Love and Rockets and save the spot. Perry came and introduced the band and then kissed them on the lips before they started playing. i thought that was pretttty funny. oh, i forgot to say that Perry brought out his kids on the kids stage after the set he played with Slash. they were soooo cute and looked pretty confused. anyway, back to Love and Rockets - i hadn't really heard them before (to my somewhat shame) but they sounded pretty damn good. we had to leave towards the end of their set because we were meeting up with Maggie. so, we missed the National. - aaaaaaaaaand NIN. thankfully we got back just in time. we were at the fountain as they started playing and managed to make our way towards the stage pretty quickly. we didn't get quite to the same place where our friends were (turns out that's where the pit was during the show) but we still got pretty close. the sound was really good. FINALLY loud enough. i very much enjoyed the whole set, even the instrumentals. the visuals were pretty amazing, especially that touch screen thing programming the beats and the 'static curtain' they were 'breaking through'. Trent sounded so good, but he was probably in a lot of pain because at the end when he apologized for having to cancel a show the night before and struggling with his voice, it sounded really scratchy. nevertheless, the singing was great. and yeah, i screamed at the top of my lungs along with everyone else. :D avsfan7733 08-10-2008, 03:47 PM Alot of people seem to be complaining about the sound quality.. but it really just depends on where you were standing. I saw rage, radiohead, and slash too and I thought the sound quality was perfectly fine. noyen 08-10-2008, 04:33 PM Alot of people seem to be complaining about the sound quality.. but it really just depends on where you were standing. Not to be a dick, but I dont see any discussion of sound quality in this thread. More importantly, how did Devotchka trasnlate live? I really like transliterator and wish I would have known about them before lolla spring 08-10-2008, 09:08 PM Devotchka is amazing live !! you should see them noyen 08-10-2008, 09:26 PM theres lots of discussion about sound quality in the thread, and we all agreed it really depended on where you were in the crowd. there were sweet spots. devotchka had some issues with the bass drum and tuba. there were some phase issues, but it wasn't bad. the sound guy was obviously bored, but he perked up midway, and the sound did get slightly better. i think it's the 8th or 9th time i've seen them over the years, and this one was one of the best for sure. pale blue eyes 08-10-2008, 10:10 PM DeVotchKa sounded great from where I was but then again I was wholly unfamiliar with them. Has anybody mentioned how awesome Iron & Wine were? Because they should have. I typed a really long review but lost it because it had been storming here earlier and my internet went so I doubt I will ever actually get around to it again. Everybody I met there and went down there with were awesome, the weekend just flew by, lots of excellent music, etc. avsfan7733 08-10-2008, 10:17 PM I regret not getting to see Iron and Wine. My buddy was raving about them all day. Now that lolla is over there is so much more I wish I would have gotten to see. I'll have to spread my time out better next time. pale blue eyes 08-10-2008, 10:39 PM After looking over the schedules I was kicking myself earlier for not getting there earlier on some days and with the way stages were set up I didn't get to see a few bands I wanted to because of them being at opposite ends of the park. Also, I didn't factor in time for eating so sometimes that won out over seeing a band I wasn't sure about. thewidow 08-11-2008, 09:47 AM i got mine off with just a bit of water though. and lots of grunting and unfing and awing your mom got off with lots of grunting and unfing and awing spring 08-11-2008, 05:22 PM Devotchka live noyen 08-11-2008, 05:28 PM :) i remember getting chills during that. we must be really short. we were totally right in front there, but i dont see us. spring 08-11-2008, 05:32 PM haha..yeah, we were right up there, but a little to the right of the person who filmed this. i remember i couldn't really see the drummer at all from where i was because Nick was blocking him noyen 08-11-2008, 05:33 PM ah, makes sense. i could see them all because of the slope :) but yeah... i wanted them to play for hours... |
