View Full Version : sitting down for the pumpkins

they've played a number of seated venues but i've never seen them in one. would anybody like to share their experiences? come to think of it, i've been on the rail at every show i've been to, approaching exhaustion from baking under the sun in line all day. i can't imagine seeing the band in any other scenario.

saw them 1998 seated also in 2000 in Berkeley seated, saw 12 Fillmore shows seated, Red Rocks was sort of seated, and NC was seated.

It's not that bad. its some what comfortable not to be all hot and sweaty.

I was rail for several shows though as well.

99, a fillmore show 07, Utah 07, South Carolina 07

stood in 99 @ the shoreline and in 96 when i first saw them.

i like being against the rail all close, but sitting has that perk of personal space...

true no one really sits unless u are in the balcony front row it seems

Yeah it sucks. No one actually sits down because it's a rock show, but then you can't move around because the fucking seats are in the way and ushers want to enforce designated areas. Fortunately only one show I've seen with SP had this arrangement (other times I've made damn sure I get in the GA pit area)...but later on we got into the isles and made our way up to the front of the stage (where, because of the small auditorium set-up, there was no rail at all.) Freedom at last! Yeah, I go for the music and all...but not being able to move around to the music still sucks. It's a fucking rock concert! Is this what happens when bands and their fans start to "age"? What the hell is happening here?

in a "pit area" situation i spend most of the time trying to stay alive. how much room do you need to "move to the music"?

their first show last year in paris was also seated.

i didn't mind the seats. it's just a bit harder to get really into it, because of the weird setup. but it's not like you can really do much except for trying to stay up and survive when you're getting crushed in the front, either. so.

advantages: you have more room, you can always sit down and take a rest, you don't have to wait in a line for hours.

Seen em in both situations. Never sat down once during their set at the seated venue. Yeah movement was restricted and at times, the crowd could have been more into it, but imo you can really appreciate the music and sound more in that setting.

I don't think you can beat front row center rail though, there's just no comparison. One of the greatest experiences of my life being that close.

Hopefully though, if Billy's "weed the casual fans out" plan works, I don't think a seated venue will be bad at all.

yeah i was in the balcony for that show, it was a bit annoying not being down by the front and we ended up standing up for most of songs, pretty much everyone was stood by the end.

Quoted for truth. I like seated venues because you can have a good spot and not have to wait in line forever for it. And if you have to drop a deuce, go for it! Your spot will be there when you get back. Plus, no drunk dudes pushing their way up front.

I definitely wouldn't have said any of this if I were 18.

this is stupid. i've been to bands that had seats who were in the prime of their careers and played venues without them.

the united center show was seated

after adore i think the bands catalog didn't really necessitate general admittance. its not like they're slayer and it would be ridiculous to book a seated venue.

also, last october i saw the band and had a GA ticket. during gatgc some belligerently wasted kid was going nuts on the floor while everyone else was standing still. i was trying to watch the band but he kept jumping up and down on my back like he was fucking humping me. he was doing this to me and the chick next to me so one thing led to another, and i had to punch this dude in the kidneys a few times to get him to fuck off. finally people in the crowd pushed him out of there.

i go to a lot of very fucking heavy shows, and i throw down with the best of them but i don't put up with getting my leg humped in the middle of a song like gatgc. enjoy the seats.

I'd go if it was closer but still 6 hours away and im in FL, not worth it

I really liked my first row balcony seat in Paris last year. After a full day on the streets of Paris, I was actually quite happy to be able to sit through the 3 hour show. The only bad part about it was the group of idiots arriving during the first song and the security lady thinking I was sitting on their seats. That was not optimal for stealth taping. So if you ever wondered why there's some phasing in the middle of United States, that's why ;)

I think after the hammond show sitting down in KY will be pleasant. every time after a front/center GA show I tell myself "this is the last time; I'm never doing this again". I can't stand getting beat up anymore. And no I don't believe that $100 tix will weed out assholes; if anything it will make everyone feel more entitled to be up close to the action

i've only seen one pumpkins show seated, and it didn't compare to standing on the rail at all. I felt like i was watching them on television. i was in the nosebleed area, so standing was pointless really. I was pretty bummed.

I had seats when I saw the SP as part of HORDE in '98 and it sucked. I sat for 3 of the SF residency shows (which were GA) by choice--I was pregnant--and they were my best SP concert experiences to date. Although the two nights I sat in the balcony were *way* better than the one night I sat to the side of the stage with club security, so I think the location of your seat probably matters. I've also been on the floor, front row center, a few times and it was always an intense experience... although I wouldn't exactly call it "fun."

my first concert, mcis ,was not seated. i was alot shorter and smaller back then. I got shoved down and my legs were stepped on by a guy that had to be 250 +. the bruises were worth it all though, because it was the best sp concert out of all I have been to.

was front and center for the Virgin Festival shjow last year and in 99 at Bogarts. Was 30ft from the stage in Ft Wayne 10-30-96 for what they dubbed the Halloween show. Crazy night with masks and rock and loud. Barely any room to breathe, lots of movement.
I have been seated at Minnesota this past tour and...when I couldn't get to the floor in Jan 97 in Cincy. I went to Normal, IL this past fall and it was pretty much seated, but I stood.

I like the front and center, no doubt about that. With everyone moving, it really takes a lot out of me, but it's totally worth it. If I'm not in the boondocks, I don't so much mind seats. Just if I'm going to stand up the whole time I should have some room to move around.

GA is nice to not have to consider how good of a seat you're getting. but i say that biased. im pretty tall and don't have to worry about a view.

I've seen them both ways.

Standing allows you to fully get into the music.

Sitting allows to just chill and enjoy it as though it was a private show for just you or something.

Both are awesome experiences.

Garski's really freakin' tall.

I saw Prince in... I think it was `03 on his Musicology tour. It was a funk record, and the venue was... not Roy Wilkins, but the bigger venue right next to it. That's not Alliant is it? Anyway... it was Saint Paul, and the good thing about it was, instead of putting Prince on one end and then lining people up front to back, he was at the center of the place, and seats were all around. Gave people a much better chance of seeing him up close. I think we were only thirty rows back at most... probably less. Funky tunes that made you want to get up and get your groove thing on, even if you are a honkey white bread boy from small town wherever in the Midwest. I'd say 95% of the crowd was standing and grooving. The "artist in the center of the venue" was what made it a great sit-down gig though.

First time I saw the Pumpkins was at MSG for MCIS tour and everyone in the audience was standing. I was in the pit right in front of Billy against the rail. I was getting crushed the entire time but it was so awesom. Never had a view that good at a concert.

I saw the band again in long Island on a second leg of the tour and everyone was sitting and Blilly yelled at the audience for being lame.

Adore at Radio city was seated but I was on shrooms so I'm glad I didn't have to stand for that.Billy played the house prgan to open the show which was weird. I thught the Phantom of the Opera was there. Coincidentally a few years later i saw Rick Wakeman with Yes and he did his solo on the house organ and blew Billys silly organ bit to shame.

I have a hard time with this sort of thing because there are certain points during concerts when you want to stand and rock the fuck out but if you have a bunch of winy pussies behind you they complain the whole time.

I saw Genesis last year at giants stadium with a bunch of friends. We are really into 70's prog Genesis and we used to spend countless hours in my room with a disco ball and a bong listening to Genesis. I know 80's Genesis is pussy music but 70's genesis is awesome and when they did any of that stuff we wanted to stand up and rock out, also to show how much we liked what we were seeing. but all the fucking old people in the audience were complaining but we were not gonna compromise ourselves at the first and last Genesis concert we ever saw so we continued to rock out. There were a few other hardcore people in the audience getting the same treatment and we all made friends but the rest of the audience around us threw their beer bolttles at us. luckily they were plastic so who gives a fuck. Halfway through the show all these people either left or went to different seats.

It's a rock concert you dipshits so eithr rock out or stay on your couch at home.

FUCK YES!!

I can't stand that situation. Lame crowds suck. There should be places where people can go if they want to sit, like areas of seats (maybe to the sides or something) interspersed with standing/dance floor sections. People would also be free to move between them. That way people could self-segregate according to preferred listening environment. This is what's good about many bars, clubs, and converted theaters--it's all GA, but there are places people can go to sit, or drink, or whatever. People can just move wherever the hell they want depending upon what they want to do.

I went to a Tool concert like this: it was at a small indoor municipal arena, which was basically like the sort of place a district high school basketball game would be played. Although there was a distinct "floor" and "bleachers" area of the arena (concrete bleachers on either side of the floor), unlike many concert set-ups people were quite free to move between the bleachers section and the floor at will. The floor got crowded, but not too much so: naturally, not everyone wanted to be subjected to a notoriously rough pit (which at the time Tool pits had this reputation) but that was cool because plenty of people decided to chill in the bleachers. Down with seating assignments!

It was decidedly not rough during the SP2 show in Dallas. The roughest shows ever seemed to get was in those large European outdoor festivals, I think (and at the Virgin festival, another GA outdoor venue.) Not even those were that rough looking, though. Just some jumping around and smushing.
