the man man album was a big let down for me. so was the british sea power album, but i expected that. wolf parade's album was underwhelming but still alright. it feels like all the spencer krug bands are losing their identities the more he goes along.

i dont see what the big deal is with the fleet foxes record. seems very ordinary.

im gonna give the grouper album a listen some time tomorrow

i wouldn't say that the singles are that iffy, all the A-sides they've done: Doorbell Fire, Yellow Mice Sleep, Two Months, In a Web, are great. even Mirror Lights is good. the b-sides aren't as strong but i still enjoy them all, I can't think of a Blank Dogs song yet I really don't like.

2. *Shels - Sea Of Dying Dhow - fucking gorgeous. not just neur-isis wallpaper, but quality epic shoegazey metal.
3. Earth - The Bees Made Honey In The Lions Skull - another one that took me ages to appreciate, but what a fucking spectacular album.

Sonic Johnny

who cares... the riffs are crazy hypnotic.

And this Lurker Of Chalice thing is pretty good so far. Its a relief to hear some well-produced Black Metal that doesn't sound like it was recorded inside a hoover.

Also you really should marry me. I'm a handsome, fairly fit young man whose job will be worth a hell of a lot when the US economy collapses, cause i get paid in Australian $$.

i'm really surprised there aren't any mentions of radiohead - in rainbows in this thread. it tells me you people are buying into the bullshit that the promotional mp3's they put out in 2007 constitutes an album release, and therefore are not considering it as a candidate for 2008.

no offense, but that seems a lot more plausible than everyone agreeing its 2008 but not putting it on their lists because they don't like it enough to be in their top 5........though thats basically my thinking on the subject.

no i just think if you're going to do a side project you'd want to be a bit more adventurous...why make a grizzly bear record without grizzly bear? dude's probably a huge control freak

Shapan

rossen was initially in department of eagles and he joined up with grizzly bear before yellow house. so maybe this is just what his sound progressed to, grizzly bear's debut sounded way different without him when it was just droste's outlet. i havent heard of any of his doe stuff before this album, though.

edit: so i just listened to doe's LP before this one, and if you're looking for something thats not grizzly bear by rossen, this would be it. this is called the cold nose, the band has 2 LPs, cold nose and the upcoming in ear park.

hxxp://www.mediafire.com/?xnvtoogtcnn

its not as good or focused as in ear park but i like it. it can get pretty random as it goes along and is pretty scattered in general, but you can hear their direction in that last song.

Deerhunter-Microcastle
blank dogs - on two sides
fuck buttons - street horssing
black mountain
Evil Urges, My Morning Jacket
Third, Portishead
nick cave and the bad seeds
times new viking - rip it off

what a big 'meh'

some of that i cant really remember that well so maybe i would think it sucked if i listened again, but all of it have in common that i wouln't care if i'd never heard it. maybe earth doesn't deserve to be on there, i can see myself getting into that some time

It's not you I think. There's more people making more music and that music is getting more and more easy to make available at the same time making records harder to sell. As a result the talent gets more and more diluted the more music is made available. Yeah I don't really hear much that will be remembered. Maybe its just a bad year (I still listen to a lot of my favorite albums from 2006)

Hi, Julio. Just the other day I half-assedly looked at his website to see if he had any projects on the horizon, as I hadn't heard his name in a long time. I somehow didn't manage to come up with the information that he had a new album coming out. What's it called? You like it pretty well?

While I'm here, I suppose I'll update my favorites:

Sam Amidon - All Is Well
Nat Baldwin - MVP
Thee Oh Sees - The Master's Bedroom Is Worth Spending a Night In
Xiu Xiu - Women As Lovers (I've listened to this on and off since it came out, but just this week I'm starting to really like it, especially "i do what i want, when i want"
Sic Alps - U.S. EZ
Blank Dogs - On Both Sides
Justus Kohncke - Safe and Sound
Ellen Allien - Sool
Matmos - Supreme Balloon (parts of this kinda suck, but overall it's enjoyable)
Beach House - Devotion (not great but I've had some good moments with it on)

I guess the Lindstrøm is ok, but overall it's not really doing too much for me yet.

Also, the Gas and Basic Channel reissues are fantastic.

Thanks for the link. The new Thee Oh Sees is good, and I definitely like Cool Death of Island Raiders, but by far my favorite release of theirs is Sucks Blood from last year. It's really one of my favorite albums to come out in a long long time. It took several listens for it to really sink in, but since then, I've been listening to it at least once a week for a year straight. I have a really difficult time putting my finger on what makes it so incredibly compelling and affecting to me. I mean, the songs themselves are great, but something about the way it was recorded and produced really brings the album to transcendent level. Maybe I'm gushing too much, but I really connected with it a lot.

maoi
09-07-2008, 11:29 PM
nah. thats how i feel about cool death of island raiders. the production is very evocative. i guess. are you a fan of natural snow buildings? I dont blame anyone if they find them boring and not wanting to trudge through 40 minutes of droning, but speaking of transcendent music, these guys do it for me. they put out 3 albums this year alone to my knowledge and i like them all a lot.

comparing the two on the basis of repetition is not valid

i think both good drone and good techno have hypnotic qualities. what's good about them is what's good about minimalism. subtle mood shifts / no instrumental wanking / nothing to distract you from the "core of the sound"

i may sound like a retard but i think drone and techno are very much alike in that department. that techno is "calculated" is both wrong and a silly argument.

i think i like it better than god's money. they could use a good drummer though.

apropos, the new marnie stern album is of course very cool.

the lykke li album is a singer/songwriter pop album, they generally dont have much staying power. kinda like feist's first album.

but its good for what it is

little teeth's LP finally came out and is alright, i wish they wouldve done a little more. the starfucker album is cool, stereolabish.

finally a batch of albums that are truly interesting upon first listen arrived at my home

pumice - quo
a.m. - rag red reverie
toshimaru nakamura - dance music
growing - all the way

the growing one sounds exactly like a 50/50 mixture of techno and drone. highly recommended for celluloid_love that bum

also grabbed

mark kozelek - 7 songs belfast
prurient - cocaine death

from hipinion. these are top-notch, but i think that's only if you already like said artists

switch that, i kinda got sick of it already.

yeah she's cute for a hot minute but it gets old fast. i even heard little bit dubbed over a victoria's secret commercial a few days ago. :erm: she's in love with bon iver and that could be potential genius in terms of collaboration and.or influence, but she's so poppy it's really hit or nasty miss.

and the new ggd easily = top rank. and I LIKE PRINCES. tinchy stryder raps a bunch of filler but it's fucking fun.

i hate that everything on my top 10 is featured in pitchfork

why do people still have this mentality? i mean i dont necessarily agree with everything pitchfork says(im sure they ripped that kills record ive been raving about and i dont even need to check) but its a good way to get music around because a lot of people check that site. if they give an album you like a good review it just means that more people will listen to it, which i thought was a good thing? you cant really be so insecure that the thought that you like an album that few people have heard makes you feel better about yourself, can you? finding albums isnt terribly difficult.

im pretty sure people are paying less and less attention to the substance of these reviews the earlier records leak, anyway. people just check reviews these days to see if they agree with their opinion, considering they've had enough time to form a pretty strong one in the time between the leak and release date. the occasional person who sees a high score for an album, skims through the review and listens to the album is a good thing. its a decent way to get the word out on some albums, like if someone made a thread about the album here. whether or not the number reflects any sort of accuracy is still up to the person listening.

pitchfork sometimes has horrible taste though. especially concerning the way it presents alleged new superstars of indie rock or whatever. if you like a lot of stuff pitchfork likes, chances are you're some dumb easily manipulated hipster type who eats up everything pitchfork says is good and can't form an opinion of his own.

if you're not, you'll have to meet lots of those people at shows you might consider attending

Shapan

there are only so many shows you can go to to find out about music, a lot of this stuff is spread by word of mouth or by the internet. i know what you're saying that a lot of people are dictated by sites like pitchfork and thats lame but thats not really what im talking about. (i think theres only so much music you can listen to before you start thinking independently of whats fed to you, anyway) i dont know many people who think pitchfork or cokemachineglow or whatever is cool, but if it serves as an outlet to listen to some good records then thats fine and good. not based on whether or not they praise the album, but just based on the fact that its publicity and buzz for a band that someone who hasnt heard might like. there is so much good music that hearing about it from some other source aside from happening to catch the band live happens all the time. and odds are that source has a lot of bullshit opinions you dont know about. i just figure a lot of these music journalism sites are other sources. and honestly i havent read enough of their reviews to be able to act like ive figured any of them out.

personally i feel reviews are losing a lot of their pertinence because music leaks so early that more people form their opinions way before an album's release date. (some of these people probably post their reviews on pitchfork) there should probably be more of this tool judgement on those communities that provide all the music beforehand. but then it's hard to escape it and you just go around thinking practically everyone is a tool. i prefer to think people are more independent than that, if they like music they look for it, and they dont form their opinions until they listen to it for themselves. and there are plenty of sources that just let you know what exists.
