^i would inklude NMH on my list but i'm not sure whether i think the magic of the album has more to do with the instrumentation than the finer touches of the production.

Beastie Boys- Paul's Boutique
Beck- Odelay (once again, why do you have to be so awesome/eclectic, Dust Brothers?)
The Cure- Bloodflowers.
Cypress Hill- Black Sunday. (sooo evocative)
Dandy Warhols- Welcome to the Monkey House (yes, yes, yesss)
Mr. Bungle- Mr. Bungle (are you kidding me? So rich, dark, and awesome)
Wyclef- The Carnival (so listenable it's ridiculous)
Naughty by Nature- Naughty by Nature (their first and greatest. Kay Gee really killed it)
Outkast- Stankonia (very bright sounding, awesome)
Weezer- blue album (Ric Ocasic demonstrates sheer genius here. The perfect storm of pop rock perfection with Sharp, Rivers, and Ric at their best.)
Tenacious D- (the production slicks up the skits and songs and pushes them over the top)
Wu Tang- (enter the 36- really coherent, grimy, and just perfect blend on the vocals and music and feel. I heartily second this pick)
*edit* I second the In Utero pick. I was just enjoying this/marveling over it the other day. Very enjoyable. I would say something about the Pixies, but I'm such a Pixies homer I'd feel biased. Anyway, I love Kurt's voice in this production style and how it just cuts through the fuzz.

what is a produced album versus an un-produced one? can i list my favorite albums that don't exist? this place makes me want to kill myself, and this is my final post forever until i make another one.

yeah, for the most part i dont notice production changes unless theres a big difference. but if you have a noticeable change in producer, you can hear it. listen to any other coldplay album and then listen to the new one, you can hear brian eno's influence. its still not very good but you can hear eno, especially to start and end the album. albini has a similar influence to his albums too.
but for the most part in utero sticks out to me so much because of how polished and slick nevermind was in contrast with how raw in utero sounds. just a completely different sound. im also a sucker for lo-fi albums, so ive always loved how phil elverum's music sounds, the way the instruments are always kinda pushed behind him.

i can't hear anyone's production on something unless i don't hear it first. so to say i like eno's production on an album is saying he PROBABLY did a good job because i hear tell-tale signs of his production methods but that hardly means a thing. naming off great producers, like tommy dowd is another thing, since he was a talent in his own right. the fact that he was a producer, made recordings of the artists he worked with possible in an age where "producer" meant something, but now i really dont know what to think of 99% of the albums listed here as being great produced albums, because well, what exactly did these producers do that made these albums great? unless the bands are posting here themselves, this thread and life in general will continue to piss the fuck out of me.

This is exactly what I like about Killing Joke - Hosannas. They have purposely engineered it to sound raw, the primitiveness adds something when it's few and far between within the genre. It has this in your face sound like you are right there, it's fucking great.
