View Full Version : Non shit songs to play at a wedding
Kahlo 06-25-2008, 07:26 AM Hey guys, I'm getting married in a few weeks, and we are trying to sort out the music. We are trying to ban cheesy shit from the playlist, and wanted suggestions as what could be played that is perhaps romantic, but not cheesy pop stuff.
We are also looking for suggestions for a first dance song.
Bad suggestions:
Anything by Anal C*nt
ACDC- 'Highway to hell'
Anti Nowhere League - 'So what'
Sadly I think the best thing we came up with for a first dance was 'Do you realise' by Flaming Lips or something by REM
All non evil suggestions are welcome.
ChristHimself! 06-25-2008, 07:35 AM Tupac - Me & My Girlfriend
Kahlo 06-25-2008, 07:37 AM Good choice. I was expecting you to suggest Mogwai or something.
We could dance to 'Like Herod' That would finish off quite a few of the oaps in attendance.
ChristHimself! 06-25-2008, 07:40 AM I think it would be appropriate for your gf to start overturning tables and going nuts at the break
<i>What!! I'm bustin on you punk ass niggaz *automatic gunfire*
Run nigga run! *gunfire* I'm on yo' ass nigga! *gunfire continues*
Run nigga, duck and hide! Nigga I'm bustin all you bitches!
Run nigga, yeah! Westside! Uh uh uh! Die nigga die!</i>
SlingeroGuitaro 06-25-2008, 08:29 AM the first live gig i ever played was at a friends wedding when i was 17 or so. he sang this song as a suprise for his wife. it was pretty sweet

pale_princess 06-25-2008, 12:16 PM my wedding ban list:
boston- "amanda" (his ex gf's name)
any pink, christina aguilera
any "fake irish" music (spirit of the west, great big sea, etc)
i think he's banning red house painters. hah.
a magnetic fields song for first dance.
pale_princess 06-25-2008, 12:18 PM as far as rem "talk about the passion" or "perfect circle" are lovely first dance choices! :)
Kahlo 06-25-2008, 12:34 PM Great ideas - I think she is pushing for "At my most beautiful" I think that might be too romantic.
pale_princess 06-25-2008, 01:04 PM nooo! at my most beautiful would be gorgeous! :)
another one on my ban list: natasha bedingfield, UGH UGH UGH
Rider 06-25-2008, 01:22 PM Ben Folds "The Luckiest"
pale_princess 06-25-2008, 01:30 PM WORST FIRST DANCE SONGS:
etta james- at last (boooooooooooooooring, predictable, run of the mill. it was xtina augilera's wedding song if that's any indication of its lameness)
bon jovi- bed of roses/always (white trash)
luther vandross- here and now (you don't watch oprah and it's not 1990
GlasgowKiss 06-25-2008, 01:32 PM R.E.M - Be Mine
bizmarkie - just a friend
ahsed YUOOO
got what ah NEEEEED
cardiac 06-25-2008, 01:56 PM "By Starlight" might work. Get someone to play it on a piano or something, the "dead eyes" part might seem a bit gloomy, but otherwise it could be suitable
pale_princess 06-25-2008, 01:59 PM by starlight would be horrible.
he mentioned nothing about the sp so go away.

Brute Squad 06-25-2008, 05:28 PM the first live gig i ever played was at a friends wedding when i was 17 or so. he sang this song as a surprise for his wife. it was pretty sweet
I seem to recall you playing the Star-Spangled Banner at a pep rally.
fluxequalsrad 06-25-2008, 05:50 PM I Love My Bitch.
...anything by the carpenters... gallops across generations. generally classy.
SlingeroGuitaro 06-25-2008, 05:52 PM I seem to recall you playing the Star-Spangled Banner at a pep rally.
this was pre-SSB
but thanks for remembering. ha
pale blue eyes 06-25-2008, 06:12 PM I really like Mason Jennings' "Ballad For My One True Love". I don't really like any of the other stuff I have heard of his but I think it's a sweet song and like his voice in it.
didn't i once suggest that you get a live band and take the mic for "I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing" with lots of roses scattered on the floor?
pale blue eyes 06-25-2008, 06:24 PM If you did I hope you were joking.
well its either that or Sex Farm
pale blue eyes 06-25-2008, 06:48 PM Pretty much any Spinal Tap song classes up an event like this. Big Bottom would work well, too.
Mablak 06-25-2008, 06:56 PM Personally I would choose By Starlight for sure.
I think a lot of flaming lips songs are suitable, but yeah Do You Realize is a bit cheesy and overplayed. Vein of Stars might actually be pretty cool.
or Simply Red's Stars
is it ok to like that song
i mean, really like it
or Simply Red's Stars

last time i posted on here you were debating to play on a world tour with an artisit you didn't rate that highly...what did you decide to do?
well "artist" is a bit of a stretch, more like sellout wannabe hack with some bigshot management...i didn't go for it. i went to a few meetings to see what it was about and it was complete bullshit. i've got principles, man.
threetwooneZERO 06-26-2008, 01:33 AM This is what I am dancing to when I get married; The Flamingo's I Only Have Eyes For You
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/bTkcu4GVRe8&hl=en"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/bTkcu4GVRe8&hl=en" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Probably one of the nicest songs ever.
I forced my sister into playing "Green Onions" by Booker T & The MG's for her wedding party entrance. There was NO way I was was walking out to "Celebrate Good Times!" Needless to say it was a pretty bad ass entrance song.

i dunno how appropriate this is, but its got a nice groove to it.
Fattening Ass 06-26-2008, 01:40 AM i've said this before and i'll say it again
Queen - Another One Bites The Dust
Kahlo 06-26-2008, 01:53 AM i've said this before and i'll say it again

Not a bad suggestion. Fat bottomed girls is also good :)

I would give myself rep just for this.
cardiac 06-26-2008, 02:28 AM by starlight would be horrible.
he mentioned nothing about the sp so go away.
Qualifies as a "perhaps romantic, but not cheesy pop" song to me
High five, Mablak

pale_princess 06-26-2008, 11:59 AM Personally I would choose By Starlight for sure.
that's fucked up. vacant eyes, dead eyes. really unromantic.
if i'd have to go sp luna or strtj would be far more appropriate. straightforward lovesongs without the bs.
Deadeyes 06-26-2008, 12:14 PM Yeah, my life has been empty, my life has been untrue? way to bring the house down you inconsiderate assholes.
This song is about some negative creep thinking the world revolves around him and that his mate should be like him, nothing to do with love at all, bastards.
ravenguy2000 06-26-2008, 12:32 PM Maybe you should just play songs everyone else will like and enjoy so you don't come off as precious, self-centered dillweeds.
GlasgowKiss 06-26-2008, 01:27 PM The smashing pumpkins reek of insincerity.
sickbadthing 06-26-2008, 05:20 PM Tupac - Me & My Girlfriend
That is playing at my wedding for reals. I love that song.
I love finger fuckin you, all of a sudden I'm hearin thunder
When you bust a nut, niggaz be duckin or takin numbers
Love to watch you at a block party, beggin for drama
While unleashin on the old timers, that's on my mama
I would trade my life for yours, behind closed doors
the only girl that I adore, everything I'm askin for
Talkin to me beggin me to just, take you around
Seventeen like Brandy you just Wanna Be Down
Talkin loud when I tell you be quiet you move the crowd
Bustin rounds, activatin a riot, that's why I love you so
No control, down to roll, unleash
After a hit you break apart, then back to one piece
Much love to my one and only girlfriend, the world is ours
Just hold me down, baby witness the power
Never leave a nigga alone, I love you black or chrome
Turn this house into a happy home, me and my girlfriend
fluxequalsrad 06-26-2008, 06:00 PM Maybe you should just play songs everyone else will like and enjoy so you don't come off as precious, self-centered dillweeds.
carpenters!
pale_princess 08-06-2009, 09:41 AM okay so i just finalized my playlist for saturday. not gonna name off everysong, but this is how it flows;
after the first 3 songs (first dance, daddy daughter, son & mother) it flows;
oldies
80s/disco mixed
90s dance pop
current top 40 hits (& some from last summer & the summer before)
80s "classics" (think springsteen, mellencamp, police)
early 90s club hits
disco
classic rock
boy bands
"girlie music" (think gwen, madonna, beyonce, etc. stuff you guys hate)
a bit more classic rock
90s alternative
britpop (i call this the 'dance cave' section)
r&b/hip hop
a little country (really, just islands in the stream)
then a handful of power ballads & winding down music
ends with november rain
i know, it seems fucked but it all flows and suits our tastes pretty well. a few power ballads thrown in every few sets for slow dances, of course.
Dogfighter28 08-06-2009, 09:46 AM My sister walked down the aisle to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (song)
:erm:
pale_princess 08-06-2009, 09:49 AM yeah if i still had the mentality i had at 18 i'd probably be doing the same and my playlist would be a lot shittier and snottier and no one would have any fun except me. hah. good thing i wasn't a child bride.
publius clodius 08-06-2009, 11:06 AM more parties should have that kind of diversity
i'd throw in a bit of classic soul / funk
pale_princess 08-06-2009, 11:26 AM ^ i lumped those in with the "oldies" part :)
AndySlash 08-06-2009, 12:11 PM ends with november rain
awesome
Deadeyes 08-06-2009, 01:03 PM play another wedding song
a wedding song goes on and on
see the churches falling down
this is only in your mind
we're useless
we're useless
all their dresses stand so white
all the brides are all in white
play another wedding song
a wedding song goes on and on
we're useless
we're useless
walking on the paper ruins
shoes and rice and one two three
picking through the plastic ruins
of my useless memory
make a line of useless women
make a line of useless men
love me love me love me love
again again again again
we're useless
we're useless
completely
Kahlo 08-06-2009, 01:43 PM fuck this thread is old
slunken 08-06-2009, 02:59 PM just like the concept of marriage
Kahlo 08-06-2009, 03:06 PM It works for some people
redbull 08-06-2009, 03:19 PM u gotta drop some dance punk, house of jealous lovers maybe
pale_princess 08-06-2009, 04:27 PM u gotta drop some dance punk, house of jealous lovers maybe
if i had added a new order song that wasn't 'temptation' i'd have room for this. but temptation's a pretty crucial song to play.
1979-->temptation--->disco 2000 is the altrock to dance cave/britpop flow, which i believe to be awesome.
1979's the only sp song.
smashingjj 08-06-2009, 05:04 PM a punch-up at a wedding
fluxequalsrad 08-06-2009, 05:17 PM My sister walked down the aisle to Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (song)
:erm:
my sister walked down to 'superchrist'.. ..:erm:
pale_princess 08-06-2009, 06:45 PM ^ your sister is a retard
fluxequalsrad 08-06-2009, 06:54 PM ^ your sister is a retard
that didn't happen.
wounded 08-06-2009, 07:01 PM if you actually want people to hit the dance floor stick to 80's
pale_princess 08-06-2009, 08:37 PM believe me, technotronic, c&c music factory, milli vanilli and nkotb get the party going around these parts.
black celebration
a question of time
anything by tupac
severin 08-07-2009, 03:02 AM my girls and my first dance will be falling by julee cruise
and we have so many banned songs it's not even funny any more.
I'll hijack the turntables and play them all.
publius clodius 08-07-2009, 04:00 AM just put on blood on the tracks
Eulogy 08-07-2009, 08:39 AM if i'd have to go sp strtj would be far more appropriate. straightforward lovesongs without the bs.
