I thought Morrissey said in an interview that he wasn't gay

he's said he's asexual. he's said he's gay. i recently heard a rumor or some possibility existence of a quote of him saying he was straight recently. who knows. i think he hates bi's tho. he wants it raw with his vespas and shit.

Well I also read a quote where someone from The Smiths (I think Johnny Marr) says he's had many girlfriends and many boyfriends. If that's the case, bi.

which actually makes perfect sense.

cause you're gay and you understand things like this?

you're the therapist, right? the return missionary in denial of his desire of cock? yes, i can understand this because i'm gay. insight. my gayness gives me insight into a gay world of gay thoughts.

name me a better band from the 1980s.

they are def. a contender for best band of the 80s. there's really no one i've heard that can compare, however i can't listen to them for long periods of time w/o getting in a sour mood, fsr. i have a much higher tolerance for cocteau twins, talking heads, sonic youth, the cure, dm, jd/no, inxs, u2, the police, pixies [who btw released as many records in the 80s as the police did], MBV, REM, def leppard, duran duran, and so on...doesn't mean any of those bands are better necessarily. CT/SY are probably my favs though

The Smiths pretty much typify 80's music, imo.

I want to win the lottery, so I can buy rare, limited edition vinyl presses of Smiths albums and then hurl them at people and objects with immense force.

I think they're kind of overrated

???

not overrated at all. consistently incredible band.

great lyrics (if M's droney vocals can get a bit tedious)

incomparably brilliant guitar playing (johnny marr is NOT overrated, serious contender for best famous guitar player ever- and he never played a damn solo)

awesome basslines

best drummer of any 80s band

+ major cultural relevance

= greatness

I'd agree with this.

Obviously Morrissey and Marr get all the hype, but their rhythm section is incredible.

Marr is an incredible rhythm player, certainly in my top 3 of all time.

relax, i wasn't trying to catch you out or be a smart arse, i just disagree with you. mabye with hindsight they sound like other 80s bands that came later (but i think those similarities are superficial, for every "jangly" song there is something tougher and darker, a Miserable Lie, a Handsome Devil, a What She Said etc... ) but when the Smith emerged synth pop like the Human League, Duran Duran etc.. ruled and in that context the Smiths sounded and looked like they came from Mars.

Not true.
Some of the songs have a very obvious tinge of that,
but i think Morrissey was just trying to be evocative,
and i think he used homosexuality as a metaphor.
i think they are all about being someone strange and unrelatable to most other people.

I love the Cure but I've never met anyone over 16 with a functioning brain who thought they were better than the Smiths.

depends what you mean by 'functioning', but i've listened to the cure much much more than i have the smiths. there's just sth about the cure where i get into these grooves where they're all i want to hear. they have more to offer as far as quantity, obviously, since all bob does is get new ppl every few years and call it the same name, but also there's great variety in their albums, musically, emotionally, in every way.
