View Full Version : so do me a favor plz
SlingeroGuitaro 06-11-2008, 06:34 AM the band I'm recording heard me listening to zeitgeist while I was reading the 'year later' thread. they heard the first solo and went 'woah we want THAT tone for such and such song' and went to bed. i spent a couple hours tonight trying different amps and guitars and effects and I think I have something fairly close (close enough to work at least). tell me what should be different. we havent tracked any of the song yet but they want to build around this tone. we'll see where it ends up

im only worried about the lead sound.
lead git: SG classic with P90s (they want to record the song with this guitar) -> vox wah -> tube screamer -> digital delay -> JCM 800 -> marshall cab. mic was a u87
left and right rhythms are my strat with lace sensors -> uberschall. left channel has u87 on cabinet, right channel has 421.
slowdawn 06-11-2008, 07:40 AM That sounds pretty spot on to me...great work!
wilch 06-11-2008, 09:14 AM i think it sounds a bit more phat on the album if you know what i mean, its got more balls, but what do i know
SlingeroGuitaro 06-11-2008, 01:13 PM i think it sounds a bit more phat on the album if you know what i mean, its got more balls, but what do i know
yeah I just wanted to capture it the most natural way possible. it will be bigger and more polished later.
so... yay or nay
TicalFSU 06-11-2008, 01:33 PM Sounds good to me

cork_soaker 06-11-2008, 03:36 PM sweet chops. some nice licks in there.
fluxequalsrad 06-11-2008, 03:47 PM are you in a metal band?
SlingeroGuitaro 06-11-2008, 04:08 PM ha no
rolmos 06-11-2008, 04:35 PM yay
fluxequalsrad 06-11-2008, 04:54 PM ha no
than in what context are you presenting these Tarantula guitars?
somaziro 06-11-2008, 05:13 PM sounds a little thin and "metal-y", but otherwise pretty spot on

^ they want that lead tone for one of their songs. i figured it would be easier to tell if it was a close match by playing the solo the sound is based on

thats the p90s. they were pretty adamant about recording with this guitar so I worked around it. it will be a little thicker later on- these are just raw tracks with a mic thrown up to the cabinet.
thanks guys
JRiordan 06-12-2008, 01:24 AM lovin the tone, nice work.
can you play and post the lead when it comes screaming back in after the quiet part (i.e. "don't... they..... KNOWWWW" -> awesome lead is back).
EDIT: at 3:13-3:14 of the song. man, I love this song.
Mablak 06-12-2008, 01:52 AM I think you've done pretty damn well Slingero

anytime =) and if you ever need someone to sit around and do nothing but listen to bands record their music - I am your man

This really did make me LOL. For those of you less savvy about recording gear, the large diaphragm Neumann mic being "thrown" retails for about $3000.
SlingeroGuitaro 06-12-2008, 06:35 PM eh, about $2500
cheaper than my 2 u47s though
j.willard 06-12-2008, 07:01 PM This could be so much better if you use this guitar :
The pickups alone... the power level possible! (http://orlando.craigslist.org/msg/717539250.html)

fuck.yes.
j.willard 06-12-2008, 07:23 PM I am soooo tempted hahaha. If only I could blow that much money on a funny ice-breaker. I'd put it on the wall.
Tribute2JohnnyB 06-13-2008, 11:05 AM well god damn.
almost spot on.
good fucking job!
aztec litany service 06-16-2008, 09:36 AM nice, real nice.
Thaniel Buckner 06-16-2008, 10:41 AM wait, you were using only a u87? no dynamic close mic?
SlingeroGuitaro 06-16-2008, 10:44 AM nope- only the u87. dynamics color the sound a lot. if i want to capture the natural sound of the cabinet or speaker as-is i will throw up a u87 or r-122.
SlingeroGuitaro 06-16-2008, 10:49 AM the 421 is ony favorite dynamic mic on guitar cabinets. its deeper sounding than a (piece of shit)57 and is a little more musical. them being deeper helps push them back in a mix and compete less with a main instrument in the mix
Thaniel Buckner 06-16-2008, 10:54 AM nope- only the u87. dynamics color the sound a lot. if i want to capture the natural sound of the cabinet or speaker as-is i will throw up a u87 or r-122.well it makes sense to me to at least get a sm57 3 inches from the grill at most. i know it will color the sound. you obviously don't have any problems getting the right overtones out of the amp but it just needs some meat. even if it's barely in the mix, you have a LITTLE extra something there.
Thaniel Buckner 06-16-2008, 10:55 AM well it makes sense to me to at least get a sm57 3 inches from the grill at most.
or whatever dynamic you find to be superior.
Rommy 06-16-2008, 11:45 PM what a wankfest.
