at dawn they ride again, they'll haul you out to the streets.
they'll burn your papers and your empty trash cans,
beat this thought into your head, singin over and over again:
"all your life is obscene!"
"forget the papers, forget your musical dreams!"
but that's when my knife rises,
their life ends and my life starts again!

Evil Urges actually rules. But as far as four packs of hauntingly brilliant ballads go...

it smashes down
I needed it most
phone went west
strangulation

this is one of the most darkly brilliant seqences in music history!

long live the funeral anthem.

Too me its like a mini-Mellon Collie. It seems to me like people are just offended by it because its not indie-tastic... whatever!

oh, don't carve me out
don't let your silly dreams
fall in between
the crack of the bed and the wall

at dawn is one of the 50 best albums of all time, imo.

the way that he sings gives me goosebumps so much ... one of the best uses of a xylophone in musical history.

"Why's it so strange when they say that the world's movin upwards?
Why's it surreal when my hands feel they cant roll the dice?
Why's it so great just to wake every day, alive and by your side.
It's a mystery I guess, there's lots of things I cant find.
Its not the way that you look, but your move that catches my eye.
Why's it so soft when the cannons unload on the others?
Why're we so loud when we say it wont happen to us?
Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song?
It's just the way that he sings,
Not the words that he says, or the band.
I'm in love with this soul, it's a meaning that I understand."

my problem with this album is that the second track nowhere near lives up to the promise of the first

Man, Dondante is great.

I should've fucking stuck around. Unbecoming of a Roo vet, I didn't bring full raingear and just had on a rain jacket. By about an hour and a half in, when the rain and wind really picked up I couldn't take it anymore and went back to the tent.

Fuck. Biggest Roo regret in the years I've gone.

I was in the Superjam tent (it sucked) until the second set started, I started to fall asleep during Oh Sweet Nuthin and left. Heard Dondante and Run Thru from my tent and they sounded great.

Yeah, the first part of the set I saw wasn't exactly grabbing me. Really low key. Plus the rain...

But when I heard Dondante, Run Thru and Touch Me Part 2 from my tent I was pissed I didn't go back.

What was the Superjam, even? I never found out. Was it the Claypool/Hammett/Hutz covering Waits thing?

^^ yeah but Hammett didn't show until after I left, and Claypool/Gogol wasn't interesting me in the least. They started 45 minutes late, too.

MMJ were never "indie-tastic", i dont know what you're talking about.

Evil Urges has a few really good tracks, but after "Z"? letdown.

This album is a completely different experience from Z and not really comparable though you could say the same thing about all their records. I thought it was pretty fucking akward for a while, but now every time I listen to it gets incrimentally better to the point where all I have to do is pretend Highly Suspicious doesn't exist to consider this a great record. Evil Urges, Librarian, Aluminum Park and Smokin From Shootin are all perfect songs. Hell, I even invented a new drinking game for Aluminum Park. Put it on repeat, and every time Jim James screams you take a shot of whiskey. Rockin' timees.

Oh, I also figured out where the break down in EU feels so familiar. Although it definately has an allman brothers/led zeppelin vibe to it, I have to say for me it conjurs the ghosts of the Tea Party's 1993 sitar epic "The River".

The band Imperial has a great album called ‘We Sail at Dawn’.
I specifically enjoy the track ‘Drinking Wine From the Wounds of our Dead Wives’.
