View Full Version : changed my mind about Hail To The Thief
Catherine Wheel 05-27-2008, 04:24 PM With the exception of maybe 3 songs I really enjoy it. Its my favorite Radiohead album. Amnesiac is probably my second fave. I got HTTT when it first came out and quickly got tired of it but I love it now.
My favorite songs are Backdrifts, There There, and We Suck Young Blood.

Catherine Wheel 05-27-2008, 06:48 PM Do most people here like OK Computer and Kid A the best? I know a lot of people feel that HTTT was the beginning of their decline or a misstep.
mellon_c0llie 05-27-2008, 07:26 PM Httt has some definite gems but I really like amnesiacs b-sides out of all radiohead's music.
neopryn 05-27-2008, 07:42 PM hey guys let's rank the radiohead albums
avsfan7733 05-27-2008, 08:20 PM what about go to sleep, that song kicks ass.
mellon_c0llie 05-27-2008, 10:27 PM I wasn't a fan until I saw the video. I don't know why.
TheDeuce 05-27-2008, 10:56 PM OK Computer for the win. place your bets!
fluxequalsrad 05-27-2008, 11:20 PM There are some definite duds on Hail to The Thief, I sometimes wish they would ditch Nigel Godrich.... and this album is the most god-forsaken Nigel Godrich'd album of them all.
redbreegull 05-27-2008, 11:49 PM This and Amnesiac are my least favorites.
davin 05-28-2008, 12:54 AM HTTT its my 2nd fav, after OK Computer.

you didn't see any radiohead shows in 2003 did you?
i swear, even after my purely joyful experience in Dallas last week....the 2003 show I saw still ranks at the top for me, out of thel 4 times i have seen them so far. and i didn't even like HTTT that much when i first heard it...but after the show....i was in awe of it.
celluloid_love 05-28-2008, 04:43 AM songs are all good except where i end and you begin, but the production is totally soulless
Shapan 05-28-2008, 05:16 AM yeah httt is really good. i never liked how 2+2=5 would always get me really pumped up then the next two songs would just bring me down. sit down stand up and sail to the moon aren't bad songs and im sure radiohead intended a cool polar opposite feel, but 2+2=5 is such a fucking rush that being dragged along by those two would take me out of the mood. it was particularly a bit of a let down the first time i listened to the album. i kinda feel the same way about subterranean homesick alien after paranoid android, but sha is just a better song than the two that follow 2+2=5. now that i think about it, bulletproof has kinda wore off me too because my iron lung and just are so fucking killer. (just and my iron lung back to back = fucking awesome) ive always thought bulletproof was the weak link on the bends. but i think bulletproof is just subpar whereas you're suppose to get lost in those other songs off httt and okc. it doesnt work as much for me. good songs but its hard to place them right after the band rocks out like that.
aside from there there when it was the single, i think the first song i became utterly obsessed with on httt was we suck young blood. i still find that song extremely hypnotizing, i love everything about it.
i skip straight to the last five songs lately, it's realyy bliss man.
I'm Hardcore 05-28-2008, 05:33 AM have always like this record, completely agree with manuloid_love on this one.
wounded 05-28-2008, 07:50 AM i liked it a lot more after i saw it live. i can actually say i like all of radioheads albums, but the best are the bends and OK computer. I feel a lot of bands best efforts are their sophomore/third efforts.

nah, but I saw them in 2005 on that north american club tour, and yes the 'Hail to the Theif' songs were unbelievable, Especially 2+2=5.
Do most people here like OK Computer and Kid A the best? I know a lot of people feel that HTTT was the beginning of their decline or a misstep.
yeah, something like that.
but there are still a gems on HTTT that are essential.
my main problem is the lack of continuity. a few songs are just jarring
a 10 (maybe 12 at most) song version would make it 200% better

you mean 2006, right?
i was singling out 2003 because of the larger # of HTTT songs being played then.
sure, they played a few HTTT tracks when i saw them in 2006, but the focus was more on all the new material being played that tour.

lies.
aztec litany service 05-29-2008, 06:14 AM there are a few songs i don't particularly care for, but as a whole it's a solid record. IR still hasn't done anything for me (love bodysnatchers tho)
sail to the moon is outta this world (literally har har)
Eulogy 05-29-2008, 10:34 AM a 10 (maybe 12 at most) song version would make it 200% better
this is probably true. The Gloaming and I Will, while decent tunes, probably could have been left out. other than that i'm not really sure. There There is one of my favorite Radiohead songs though.
redbull 05-29-2008, 12:20 PM I really like Com Lag
Anvil Hands 05-30-2008, 02:01 PM Amnesiac and Hail to the theif caused me to loose a lot of interest in Radiohead.
In Rainbows has given me hope but seriously somebody give these guys an adrenaline shot in the chest.
Catherine Wheel 05-30-2008, 03:40 PM I cant believe they decided not to use Paperbag Writer and Where Bluebirds Fly for Hail To The Thief. A Wolf At The Door and I Will just arent that good. I always stop the album after Scatterbrain.
Shapan 05-30-2008, 04:05 PM uh those songs definitely wouldnt have fit on hail to the thief. where bluebirds fly is like listening to a popcorn machine and paperbag writer has very little direction in it. im glad those were bsides. i like com lag but the unheard songs on there are definitely radiohead's little experiments, if any of them deserved more exposure it's gagging order. that song is fucking gorgeous.
i love i will and i think wolf at the door is a solid closer. i will is short and sweet, i dont know why people dont like it. the vocals on it are great.
yes wolf at the door is a very good closer. punch up at the wedding is pretty pointless and there, there is boring. gloaming is a failed experiment. but everything else on it is pretty awesome. still feels like missing and as others pointed out its probably the production isn't as cerebral as other radiohead albums, its disjointed in a way that its an obstacle (whereas amnesiacs disjointedness made it feel like a surreal dream), and HTTT just doesn't have that sublime essence that OKC, kid a and amnesiac had. thats why In Rainbows was just a great rebound from HTTT, radiohead going back to making transcendent music
Catherine Wheel 05-30-2008, 04:51 PM Paperbag Writer has one of the best basslines Colin has ever come up with. I've never heard him play like that before. It just blows me away every time I listen to it. I love that song. It was just wrong of them to not use that for the record.
aztec litany service 05-31-2008, 05:25 AM the alt. title of punchup sums up my feeling about it haha. actually it's not that bad
that they thought to play i will backwards and make a [really good] song out of that should've said sth to them.
edit: i dl'd the flac version of the 2cd version of IR, i'm liking it this time. bodysnatchers is one of the best songs they've done. the prod. on it kinda obscures the parts but eh, it works despite that
